Shimano XT M8000 with Shimano Deore M5100 Cassette Shifting Issues

Спорт

Very quickly produced video to help out someone who commented on my previous video ( • Deore M5100 11-51T Cas... ) on M5100 cassette on M8000 rear mech, they followed the same build but are having shifting issues.

I have been using sprocket Deore M5100, RD XT M8000 and shifter SLX for 3 months and the result is going well the problem is the cog of m5100 become loose, it solved by adding spacer on the sprocket

i've had issues with m5100 cogs as well. The lock ring keeps on coming off. I have noticed that the thread is kinda short. So i changed it with other brand 11s lockring Ever since. No more loose lockring

The hanger in the video is a non-direct mount type and yes it works well :-)

I'm not sure about the chain sizing method of largest cog to chain ring plus two links. In the video, you can see that the cage is hyper extended with the chain on the largest cog. I try to avoid that. On the smallest cog, the chain should run about the width of your index finger from the bottom of the mech (and you should engage the clutch). Thoughts?

Hi Brian, many thanks for your comment :-) Firstly, if the clutch position is off in the video, this would have been a temporary condition, I don't normally ride with the clutch off. (I say normally). So the two link method was the Shimano method for sizing for hardtails on the previous generation of 11 speed systems. (M7000, M8000, M9000). On the M5100 I believe the recommendation (for hardtails) is now 4 links. This being a hybrid approach I had to pick a number. (Although I reckon 3 links will likely work as well). My thought process was to have as short a chain as possible whilst the chain still sits on both jockey wheels in the lowest gear, ensuring as little slack as possible when in the highest gear and on a hardtail this approach has generally served me well. Why try to keep the chain tight? I'm a little old skool in my thinking but better chain retention, less noise, apparently more efficiency. (Although maybe sacrificing chain life). What approach would I take with a full sus? With the rear arm travel extended to the longest point between BB and rear axle, I would probably be tempted to have started with 4 links. More movement of the rear mech through the distance between the rear axle and bb changing to ensure not to put too much work on the clutch but at the sacrifice of chain retention (not really an issue these days) more noise and less efficiency. Hopefully that has gone some way to explain the method behind my madness anyway. I know there are differing approaches with different thought processes, some prefer the shortest chain possible, some prefer the rear mech to sit very close to the cassette in the highest gear.

@@churchofdirt-mtb thank you for the response. I'd just point out that a shortest as possible approach makes sense to me also. But hyper extending the cage as shown in the video is bad and an indicator (to me) that the chain is a bit too short. For what it's worth.

@@churchofdirt-mtb the derailleur parts will wear faster under high tension. The jockey wheels for one. Also the springs, which will then cause sluggish shifting over time. Multiple bike mechanics have told me they keep chains as long as possible within reason in order prevent unnecessary wear and keep it shifting easily over time.

Hi, I have a question. I currently ride Shimano XT RD-M8000-DSGS with a Shimano SLX CS-M7000 cassette, 11-42T. I want to change the cassette with Deore M5100 11-51T, will it be possible and should I also change the chain, which is now Shimano CN-HG600-11 (114Link)

OK, so it could work with the rear mech you have BUT I doubt the chain length would be long enough. (Amount of links required would be bike dependent). If it doesn't work then you could swap to a M5100 rear mech but retain your previous shifter. The M5100 is a good rear mech and you can upgrade the jockey wheels to the Uberbikecomponent 12 speed shimano wheels which have ceramic bearings.

Difficult to know for certain, seems to be a mix of successes and failures but not enough information provided on failures to try and either fix them forward or determine configurations that just wont work. All I can say is, if you find the m8000 rear mech you are using is providing undesirable results, the m5100 rear mech works very well with other Shimano 11 speed shifters, such as the M8000

  • @churchofdirt-mtb

So the GS (used in this video), Shimano spec as Max 46T (rear) and a capacity of 39T (difference between smallest and largest cog if we simply this to 1x). Obviously I have it working with a 11-51T cassette which is beyond the Max spec and a touch more than the capacity spec. The SGS derailleur, Shimano spec the same Max 46T but a capacity of 47T, which is quite a bit more capacity than the GS used in the video. Obviously I can't guarantee success if you were to use a bigger than 46T cassette on the rear with a SGS derailleur but all things being equal, SGS should work with 11-51T cassette as well. (Keeping in mind b screw tension, chain length + chain quality and full sus vs hardtail).

@@tibotsPADYAKatTUKOD so the jockey cage is connected to the parallelogram mechanism, this shouldn't have any play. The parallelogram movement is controlled by the cable to the shifter, going from high to low gears and the spring, going from low to high gears. The preceived loose/stiffness of the parallelogram movement can be affected overtime by chain tension, from chain stretch, incorrect chain size and/or incorrect b screw tension. Hopefully I have understood what ypu have meant anyway 😀
