Nice review here. I love this reel. It’s like a cross between a stradic fl and Vanford. You get the toughness/ rigidity with the hagane body like the stradic and it’s light and smooth with the Mgl rotor like the vanford. I have my 3000 on a 7’ Avid inshore medium and it’s sick throwing artificials.

Thank you. Definitely agree. The sustain is definitely the reel if the stradic and vanford had a baby 😂. I've got this 3000 and a 2500. 2500 is paired with a 7'6 6-12 med custom This 3000 is paired with a 7'10 6-12 med Banshee Rod from bull Bay. Both great set ups. This was my favorite reel for a bit until I got the Shimano vanquish. Vanquish is basically if the twin power XD and the Stella had a baby. Basically lightweight Stella. Hagane body ,MGL rotor and internals of a Stella

I am about to buy a 3000 reel and I'm deciding between the Vanford, Sustain FJ and Daiwa Ballistic MQ LT 2500. Is the extra money for the Sustain worth it? This is for fishing for salmon in rivers near Vancouver BC. The reel will be used for spinning lures with a North Fork St 964-2 (HM) and Twitching jigs with a North Fork HS 760-2(HM). Also thinking of importing a Shimano Vanquish 2023, is it worth the step up in price from the other reels?

So I definitely recommend staying away from the Vanford. The vanford is made with the ci4+ material and tends to flex. The only vanfords that seem to not flex are the sizes 500 , 1000 and 2000 because of how small and compact they are. I have had 5 vanfords and sold them all but my 500 and 2000 I've heard 50/50 things about the daiwa ballistic mq. I've personally never used it yet so cant give personal experience for it. But I have owed the daiwa fuego Lt 2500 , ballistic Lt 3000 ( non mq version ) , back bay lt 3000 and the exist lt 4000. All 4 were smooth and nice but the material they use for the body of the LT models is very similar to Shimanos ci4+ ( but even weaker imo ) and all 4 of those framed flexed on the smallest fish I was catching ( 3 and 4lb bass ) Also be warned about the mag seal. Daiwa and people in General make mag seal sound like it's a end all be all type thing for fishing and it's not. I've talked to a lot of shops about how bad mag seal truly is. One small pin size hole in the seal and water will still get in . The sustain FJ I own 3 of them. 2500 and 3000. The body of the sustain is made with Shimanos hagane aluminum material. It's very sturdy , durable and most importantly it don't flex under loads. I have caught redfish and snook up to 38" probably 15 to 18 pounds without any issues once so ever. I believe the vanfords run around the 239 ish mark and the sustains run around the 319 ish mark. To me that extra $80 ish is well worth the upgrade you get over the Vanford and daiwa. The sustain is about 1oz heavier then both but still comes in about 7.4oz which is still incredibly lightweight. ( Just so you know the 2500 is 319.99 and the 3000 is 329.99 ) they are the same size reel only 3 differences between the 2 are. 1. $10 , 2. 2500 spool slightly shallower. But still holds over 160 yards of 10lb braid for me 3. The 2500 has a tear drop handle knob and the 3000 has a T style handle knob. Vanquish I do have the 2019 model and love both of them. They are built better then any of these reels you / I have mentioned between our conversation. The vanquish in my own experience is basically a lightweight Stella. I do plan on getting a few of the 2023 models when available. Been checking every week for them haven't found them in stock yet. But from Japan to Florida I get them around 3 to 6 days after order. Oh one thing between the sustains and Vanquish is The sustains comes with carbonfiber washers and the vanquish comes with felt washers. Felt washers are smoother but don't hold up over time. Carbonfiber are not as smooth ( unless you grease them ) but they are more rugged , dependable and last 10x longer then felt. Hopefully this helps you out. But out of the the 3 .. sustain all day long. If you can find the vanquish I'd definitely get that.

The braid I use is called Cortland Masterbraid and the knob is from an old Shimano Twin Power. Before I sold it , I removed the knob and added a different one because I like these knobs so much better
