    My 2015 shifts like a dream. And I only ever have 2 problems: 1 I can't feel the clutch with my work boots. Need to side foot it or wear shoes 2 If I don't pay attention, I'll drag my left heel on the floor which creates an 8/10 shift. If I wear street shoes and keep my heel up, everybody compliments my super smooth shifting. These cars are super easy and smooth to shift. You have to be brain damaged to shift it badly. Remember kids: It's an economical commuter, not a race car. Don't be power shifting or speed shifting or any of that other stupid shit And it's not a dump truck. Don't be double clutching or floating. One shift requires one fluid motion with the clutch, throttle, and shifter. Drive it like an old lady, and the transmission and clutch will last a hell of a lot longer When you first get into any stick shift, even if you're an old pro, you gotta get the feel. Just think smooth and you'll get the feel for it super quick and then you won't even have to think about it. It's just natural. You won't need to watch your RPM, and you can have the stereo blasting. You'll just know by instinct. Great video, sir

    Don't blame the car companies. They manufacture what ever the public asks for. Right now the public is demanding four wheel drive gas guzzling SUVs and monster bloated pickup trucks to go to the grocery store. Nobody cares about fuel economy in our fat affluent society, and nobody wants to learn how to properly and effortlessly drive a manual transmission. I'm as frustrated as you are.

    i love how the camera quality makes it look like a 2006 video. don't ever get rid of that camera also at 7:38, another thing about coasting in neutral - modern engines have a fuel cutoff so when in gear and the throttle position sensor detects that the throttle plate is fully closed but the vehicle is still moving, no fuel is being delivered into the cylinders to prevent wasting fuel. if you coast in neutral, the engine has to use some fuel to keep it running since the wheels/momentum of the vehicle are no longer powering the engine instead.

  • @SternDrive

    That camera was a gift from Greyhound Bus lines for 40 years safe driving. And ya' it is a bit dated right now. Some people say that I should get a Go Pro, and others say that is a bad idea. I do driving very well, but cameras are not my expertise at all. Maybe I should just use a modern cell phone camera? And you're right, coasting in neutral is terrible driving technic. Every time I see that I cringe. My rule is simple. While slowing down, do not clutch, or pop it into neutral until the RPM is down to idle. Thanks for the feed back!

If you would like to shift faster, you will destroy your second gear syncros prematurely. Is your second gear still OK?

    great video! I have a 2012 Cruze with a 6 speed.It shifts SO smooth and well.GM shifters have come a LONG way since,say,the 80's. One thing I will have to say is that pretty much all vehicles on the road now are automatic.And when you have a manual,people have to realize you need SPACE.They dont realize that the car will slow down between shifts,and they are right on your ass.And most suv's now have better 0-60 times that our little Cruze's. Just needed to vent about that.Its become a real problem..........................along with the insane bright headlights anymore.

  • @SternDrive

    @SternDrive

    Yup, you are right. These manual Cruze cars don't really slow down between shifts, but that huge 900 RPM split in between 1st and 2nd gear requires a bit of a pause. Automatics with torque converters don't pause in between shifts, so they get pretty upset when we pull away from intersections. I've had little old ladies give me the finger as they fly bye me on the right, and then get slowed down by pokey traffic in their escape lane. When I pass them down the road they say bad words. So funny. However, many people don't wait for that slow shift, and just jamb it. They don't understand why 2 gear gets torn out. A close ratio transmission would be very wise, but most transmission designers drive automatics, so they have no clue.

    Doug Stern it’s a 2014, it’s not an eco Cruze and runs between 2000 and 2500 on the highway. I’m still a beginner at driving manual but so far I like this car. I had no idea about the preload and I have a habit of coasting with the clutch it so I’m going to try and improve at those

  • @SternDrive

    @SternDrive

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@travisnoel3294 Never coast with the clutch depressed. It will destroy your release bearing, and if you do that on the highway on a hot day you can score your cylinder walls, or even seize your engine. It is also very hard on the clutch. It is good to leave it in gear with the clutch right out, until the engine comes down to (about 950 RPM) idle. This helps to slow you down and save your brakes. My brakes last much longer than most peoples, because of good driving practices. The only time you would hit the clutch to slow down is if you have to stop on glare ice and you need to lock up the drive wheels. So in the future when on dry roads (try it!) you will be able to make very fast stops with just the brakes, and no clutching until you are right down to idle. It makes driving so much easier. Let me know how it goes. Sounds like you are doing great!

    Thanks, this was helpful! I've been driving 5 speed manual for over 25 years, and I'm looking to buy a new car. A great deal for a car came up with a 6 speed manual transmission. At first I didn't like the look of it, with the 'R' reverse on the upper left ( I'm used to the 5 speed with the 'R' reverse on the bottom right below the 5th gear ). But after watching this video, I think I can do it, with that pull up ring on the reverse. So I think I will buy the car after all.

  • @SternDrive

    Guitar Lessons BobbyCrispy Question: Why would you want a low speed gear (reverse) on the same side as your high speed gears? I am a professional long haul driver (watch my video " 3 ways to shift a 13 speed") and I chuckle when I hear this. All heavy trucks in North America have reverse close to 1st gear because these two gears are used near the same time. You back out of the lot or garage, and pull the stick right into low gear. Why would you want to have to go all the way across the shift pattern to get into 1st or reverse? Not only is it wrong, but it is wrong headed. What is your logic is what I always ask?

    I have a 2017 (Gen 2 car, has the 'eco' transmission with the widely spaced lower rank). Once I got used to slow shifting and turbo lag, enjoy driving it. Prior car was a 2001 Sentra & that had a fairly short 5 speed. Was more fun to flog the Sentra but it's also lots of fun to relax & cruise the Cruze. The Cruze is a very stable & sedate interstate cruiser unlike the Sentra.... phenomenal fuel economy at 50-70 mph, goes much faster w/o complaint ... Didn't think I'd learn something from your video but I did. Need to be gentle pulling it out of gear while underway, didn't explicitly understand that. Knew about giving the synchro a moment to work so good there. Had a 1989 Accord and the 2001 Sentra from new, knew their 2nd owners that went well beyond 200k miles, never trans or clutch problems.

  • @SternDrive

    @SternDrive

    A lot of people have a hard time getting it into 1st, because they don't know a professional drivers secret. We rev match, and double clutch it in with one (if you like) finger. Driving a stick does not have to be hard, but if you do it right, it can be a lot of fun. To find that "sweet spot where it transitions" smoothly, just remember to preload for half a second just before your shift, and be sure to shift the lower gears slower than the higher gears. If you had a close ratio transmission, every gear would be shifted at the same speed, but alas, we have a "progressive" transmission here. So the rule is, lower gears slower, and higher gears get shifted progessively faster. As I pointed out in the video 1st to 2nd is a 900 RPM split, so if you run it up to 2,000 RPM when you pull it out of neutral into 2nd your RPM will have dropped to aprox 1,100 RPM. No matter what RPM you choose to shift at, 1st to 2nd will always drop 900 RPM. Remember, the split becomes progressively smaller as you go up the gears, so 5th to 6th is only 300 RPM split, so it's quite fast. Of course if you want to ram it, and speed shift in any gear you can, but be sure your transmission will not last the life of the car like mine always does. Let me know how you do!

    @@SternDrive Awesome thank you for the reply. I definitely want to have my car live as long as I do so I'm trying to learn. I feel like I've already damaged it the way I've driven it since I've had it. I watched this video earlier today and took all of your tips and tested them and it was noticeabley a lot smoother. I didn't even know preloading was a thing but it definitely helps. I feel like going from 1st to 2nd has to be quick though otherwise I'm too slow on turns so I have to find a balance where I'm not too slow and not too fast. I'll keep at it though and keep shifting slower while in lower gears. I didn't understand what double clutching meant though. Also I should let the rpm go all the way down to 1k before shifting or do I try and match where it will be when the next gear kicks in. For example I shift from 1st to 2nd at 2krpm and since it drops 900rpm should I aim for 1.1krpm and so on? Thank you again for the great advice!!

  • @SternDrive

    @SternDrive

    2 жыл бұрын

    Why would you do that? If you use engine compression to slow you down, your brakes will last longer. Coming off the highway on a hot day, it allows your engine to cool off better. People that keep clutching and coasting are not only making driving too complicated, but all that clutching in and out of gear just wears things out. Why do that to yourself? Most people that complicate their driving experience like this end out getting an automatic next time. Too bad, because millions of gallons of fuel are wasted with 4 wheel drive SUVs. And then they complain about the price of fuel. Very strange...

Well, when I was a teenager, that just wasn't my cup of tea b/c I was either driving w/ the music blasting or paying attention to the road, sometimes even both😁 Very rarely was I just cruising w/ the windows down no music listening to what the vehicle was doing...It didn't take too many times of me downshifting all the way to 1st when coming to a complete stop & stalling out to realize that the biting point of the clutch was just barely above idle speed so I needed to put it in neutral BEFORE the rpm's dropped that low (idle speed)to avoid stalling out!!

    It is a huge jump. These so called progressive transmissions are an error in judgement on the part of the design engineers. Huge jumps in lower gears, and tiny jumps from 5th to 6th. It's insanity. But you have to realize that the guys that design these transmissions are NOT driving enthusiasts. Their daily driver is an automatic SUV, so they have no clue what a well designed manual should perform like. People are tearing their second gear out because they refuse to wait for it. And they shouldn't have to wait for it if it was a close ratio transmission! If you wait for that RPM to drop 900 RPM it will shift smoothly, but I agree, it takes too darn long. Bottom line: My transmission will last the life of the car, because I just wait for the RPM to drop 900. Most people will not, so the shop makes money. Too bad! How's it shifting now? I will say one thing about your Eco transmission. My 6th gear is identical to your 5th gear. That's why your fuel economy might be better than mine. Can I have your transmission? I'm running at 3,000 RPM on the highway. There is no way this engine needs to run at such a screaming high RPM on the highway. I'd like to have a word with some of these transmission designers. They are really clued out.

  • @SternDrive

    @SternDrive

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you are stalling while shifting you are shifting at away too low RPM. Shift at about 1,500 or 2,000 RPM or when your shift light comes on. Now, letting off the clutch too slowly will burn it prematurely. The same is true with giving it more gas in your shift. Both of these bad habits will burn your clutch. My Cruz has the original clutch. They can last the life of the car if driven correctly. Here's how you can know if you are burning your clutch. If your car has a "progressive" transmission like mine, you will have a big RPM split (drop in revs while shifting) with your 1st to 2nd shift. Then as you shift up through the gears it will be a progressively smaller RPM split. My last shift from 5th to 6th is only 300 RPM split, so you shift that one quite fast. The 1st to 2nd shift is about 900 RPM split, so you shift that one very slow. Now, if you want to deviate from your cars natural shift speed, be my guest, but you will destroy your transmission prematurely. So, bottom line, if you shift from say 3rd to 4th and your RPM split is 500 RPM drop, you could run it up to 2,000 and if your shift is perfect the RPM will lock in at 1,500 RPM. Watch the video again and hopefully you will see it is really quite simple. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.

    You drive any manual transmission by watching the RPM. You can do that by watching the Tach, or you can go by listening to the engine revs. Sometimes I do both. A car has synchromesh so it will block you if you are not bang on. It is easier to just use the clutch. I have been driving long haul truck for 48 years and do not use the clutch most of the time. If you know your stuff, you will never damage a transmission. If you don't know what you're doing in a truck, you can double clutch and drop a transmission out on the road. I have seen it, and it is ugly. I have some videos on proper shifting of heavy trucks. Look for "3 Ways To Shift a 13 Speed Transmission" and see how it's done. All the best!

    My 2014 Cruze is still on it's original clutch. They last a very long time if you treat them right. When I taught my 12 year old daughter to drive, I told her to let out the clutch with no throttle at all. This is not the way you normally drive but it drives home the point that you do not need to burn the clutch to drive in normal conditions. Try this. Get on a level surface and put the car in first gear. Let out the clutch to the friction point (biting point) and hold it there. It is very important to hold it there at the friction point until it starts to roll up to idle speed. Then give it some throttle. Normally you would give it a bit of throttle, but this exercise will help you not burn the clutch in the future. Now to your second question. When you come to a complete stop, you can clutch it out of gear just as the RPM comes down close to idle. Then let out the clutch and stop with the brake. This saves your release bearing from excess wear. When the light turns to green, gently put the trans in first gear, and proceed as normal. Second question. You should shift into 2nd at about 13 or 14 hundred (1,300) RPM. Make sure to pause in neutral for long enough for the RPM to drop about 800 RPM. If done right you will get a silky smooth shift. Let me know how it goes. Look after that new clutch!

  • @SternDrive

    Jogab Kingdomcitizen If you would have listened to the whole video, you would have noted that I said we normally do not shift with one finger. I did this to drive home the point that it is not hard to shift a manual stick if you know what you are doing. I know lots of people who can not downsift into low gear with a death grip on the stick. I can do it with one finger because I am a professional driver. One finger just proves it does not have to be hard. As far as the speed of shifting is concerned, you can shift at any speed you like, but if you shift faster than your car is designed for in each gear, you will destroy your transmission synchromesh, and help to put food on the table for your local transmission guy. I have never owned an automatic car, so I am an expert at proper shifting. I double clutch into 2nd gear in winter, and when the transmission is cold. My transmission will last the life of the car. Today this is a lost art. BTW, you should know that I have owned new Comaro Z 28 cars, and also a 1999 Pontiac Firebird. They shifted away slower than my new Chevy Cruze, because the cruze is a 6 speed, and has a narrower RPM split in the higher gears. When racing my Pony cars I would shift fast, but be very sure, it is NOT good for the transmission. But if you win the race who cares right?
