It's funny how I learned all of this through just driving. When you start becoming familiar with how manual transmissions work these things become instinctive.
For anyone just starting to drive manual car, this is probably one of the videos you should pay close attention to, specifically when changing up gears at 7:10 . I'm going to try to learn the more advanced technique of pausing at the bite point when changing up gears once I'm a bit more confident.

I feel like I’m truly understanding the what and why and when of driving. You make the subject of driving a manual so much clearer and consistent than a whole lot of other channels out there. The biggest thing I learnt from this video is finally understanding why we add a bit of gas before releasing the clutch and that when you don’t do so some cars may try to add gas for you while others don’t. So it’s best to get used to adding that bit of gas yourself so you have consistent results across different cars. You’re also the first person to explain clearly how to take your foot off the clutch with predictable results

@@SaberisloveSaberislife I believe that if you give it a lot of gas and you are very slow with your gear changes you are "riding the clutch". ie you are trying to apply a lot of power before you have fully lifted the clutch and this is the major cause of clutch burn. This is why people think it's bad to hold on the clutch. However at low speeds such as when you are setting off, or parking you should use the clutch for a smoother start and fine control, the small amount of power at these speeds won't cause clutch burn. This channel is really good, you won't go wrong following his advice.

@@DavidLee-vi8ds the crazy thing is that "riding the clutch" is the only way to get smooth driving. Similar to an automatic. Doing it those old school ways always leads to sloppy shifts where the car jerks.
@DavidLee-vi8ds
2 жыл бұрын
@@mariov4341 Technically, it's not "riding the clutch" if it's at low speeds, it's "holding the clutch", it's the correct way to drive and it's what's taught to beginners. It's considered an important skill for parking and slow heavy traffic. I remember practicing it a lot with my instructor. People who "ride the clutch" are those who make slow gear changes at high speeds and apply a lot of gas while bringing up the clutch very slowly, it's better to bring the clutch briskly at high speeds. It's also safe to bring up the clutch without applying much gas or any gas in most modern vehicles because the engines will automatically apply enough gas to prevent stalling. On older more primitive vehicles if you try to go up a gear prematurely at low speeds without applying gas you run the risk of stalling which is why some people got into the habit of giving it too much gas during gear changes. I've been told by a mechanic the people who really "ride the clutch" are those that use the clutch as a foot rest and never move their foot off the clutch. They drive around with the clutch only partially engaged and burn out the clutch. I was amazed that people actually drove like that.

The amount of explanation makes me realize it's like explaining a "picture" you have in your head of what is happening; you have an awareness of multiple things happening simultaneously in a predictable fashion, and then there's "understanding" how the car behaves, after having driven it for long enough--everything's happening at once, but you're forced to explain each step individually. On a side-note, your explanations also helped me understand why I was able to "launch" my riding lawnmower in the high-speed gear without wheel spin or lurching (it used a clutch). It seems that thing taught me more about driving a manual transmission than I thought. 🤔

I'm 16 (in Australia thats the age for learner permit) I'll give you some tips here 1. Don't look at your stick when shifting 2. Riding the clutch on a start is normal. 3. When turning doing anything etc look at where you want to go not what you want to avoid. 4. If you're having jerky shifts the problem may be that not everything is going into sink properly, for example when I shift, I release the throttle the same time I clutch in and when I release clutch I slowly press throttle at the same time (at the bite point of cause) 5. Don't be nervous to drive, drive as much as you have the option to. 6. If you have troubles with anything just think about it, research it, just try new ways and see if it works. When shifting down you don't have to blip the throttle to do a smooth change you just have to be slow enough for that gear. 7. Always release the clutch slowly the way the clutch works is it sinks 2 things together at the same speed so if you just dump it then it's gonna be really jerky you're suppose to release it slowly but not too slowly, there's a perfect sweet spot

Are you asking about how to adjust your position at the traffic lights after stopping early? (English isn't my first language) half-clutch out (no gas) and let it roll, then press the clutch in and brake to stop. if you're on an incline, hold brake and clutch, half clutch out until it starts to vibrate, then leave the brake and slowly give a little gas.

to avoid stopping early, when you going near the junction just press the clutch all the way down and press the brake to stop where you wish.
This due is a such a great teacher with easy to understand explanations and videos that get to the point. Really helpful for a noob like me.
That pause before you fully let go of the clutch tip was so good 😭 thank you for doing the lordts work
