    According to the novel "A Study in Scarlet" that's not the way they met. They met in the laboratory of a hospital, where Holmes conducted his chemical experiments (he had just found out a substance which could react with haemoglobin and detect the slightest traces of blood) and they were introduced to each other by a friend of Watson's. It's remarkable because, the very moment they meet, Holmes tells Watson that he is a retired military surgeon that had fought in Afghanistan.

    Agreed, and I'm no big Sherlock fan. But even I cringed when he said "Mr?"... my hand started moving to the 'skip' button. Can I assume this is from the 2nd outing? I wasn't that big a fan of the first one after Sherlock and his brother first meet their sister at the train station at the beginning of that movie. What a massive missed opportunity not to show these two verbally bickering/ jousting over the whereabouts of their sister (only for her to one-up them), like... Sherlock: "clearly from the indent of the horse-drawn carriage wheel in the mud we can deduce it was carrying our beloved Enola so she must have already arrived." Mycroft: "It's only indented the usual 4 millimetres... Enola has grown in age and size since our last meeting, so clearly the indent would be more." Random woman: "But ever since discovering the wonders of the bi-cycling contraption as of late she has chosen to use it instead, that is something you do not know... for it is I, Enola." SOMEthing like that and I'm not even any kind of writer :/ Seriously... Sherlock just asked a doctor "MR?"

Modern young actors would have been viewed too young and inexperienced in classic times. Movies then didn't have special effects, so they had to rely on solid acting skills! This Dr. Watson is so insulting to Indians. In the 19th century there were no Indians other than Royalty who would even be "allowed" (read: not spat on and/or beaten up/jailed after) to be officers in the British Indian Army, much less "allowed" to become Doctors in that Army. This is absolute bullshit that actually undermines the struggles and abuse Indians have been through under the British Raj. Think about it, these people who went around putting up signs such as "Dogs and Indians not allowed", would they really allow themselves and their entire unit to be treated by "lowly Indian Doctors"? Especially in the 1870s, some 20+ years after the First Revolt/war of independence? We Indians don't need neither want a brown Watson. As much as(and especially since) I enjoy reading the novel, you keep him to yourself yeah?

  • @QuarterLifeCrises

    @QuarterLifeCrises

    As a fellow Indian, I don't find this to be insulting but I can understand what you're saying. Using POC actors to tell white people's stories (the Hamilton approach, if you will) and kinda glossing over the complicated history and prejudices of the past might be a disservice by pretending these issues didn't exist and don't influence our circumstances to this day. On the other hand, while these movies are released internationally, they are primarily through a Western lens and there are millions of Indian and other POC folk in the West who do consider the West their home and want to see themselves in their media, especially in escapist fantasies like these movies. After all this isn't supposed to be a historically accurate documentary.

  • @justaconcrete4789

    In the series of Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock can immediately know that Watson was the army doctor who served in Afghanistan, even he already know the story of Watson's brother and his marriage life based on Watson's phone. He did in the couple of seconds after seeing Watson for the first time and that ain't even as close as this. Watson pictured as a pure British who served in the couple of places including India But if this movie shows him as an Indian. That ain't cultural appropriation, that's tear the masterpiece of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle up. U can't twist something that fundamental of the characters. Now i know, why Enola Holmes 2, although has interesting mystery, deduction, and adventure way, got a bad rating compared to the first one.

    You gotta say how exactly it changes the story if Watson is Indian and not British excelt for that one moment. Also, I'm not a native English speaker, but he sounds pretty British to me. I don't remember how it was in the movie, is he even Indian? Maybe he's just British, born there etc., just not white. I bet true Sherlock would see through his skin color and notice the 5 o'clock tea habit. What I don't like about this scene is Sherlock not instantly coming to the correct conclusion that he's the potential new flatmate. It doesn't take a genius, when he was supposed to be meeting an unknown guy at that specific time.

    Casting with an Asian Dr Watson is different but as he did serve their it is an interesting idea. Jeremy Brett is the classical performance. With Cumberbatch a different take but interesting modernised version. I have not seen this version but it seems a potentially interesting approach. Also Cavill seems understated in his portrayal of the role.
