Sherlock Holmes (TV-1955) THE HAUNTED GAINSBOROUGH (S1E35)
Фильм және анимация
Hailed as the most faithfully filmed adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary characters. This acclaimed series stars Ronald Howard as the world-famous sleuth and H. Marion Crawford in a different portrayal of Dr. Watson than usual.
THE CASE OF THE HAUNTED GAINSBOROUGH: Malcolm MacGregan will lose his family's Scottish castle if he can't make the mortgage payment, by midnight. His attempts to find a buyer for the Gainsborough portrait of his ancestor Heather have failed because her ghost keeps appearing to curse anyone who takes the painting. Holmes believes the haunting has more to do with the greedy mortgage holder than an actual spirit.

It's fun seeing Archie Duncan playing several roles in addition to Inspector Lstrade such as Malcolm MacGregan here and Lestrade's cousin Insp. MacDougal in the episode of the Jolly Hangman. Many of the ensemble cast of extras played several characters in different episodes.

One fellow plays in at least 7 episodes and others in four or five, they are such good actors you don’t mind, it makes it fun, it was the 50’s after all 70 years ago. I love the relationship between Watson and Holmes. They are both superb actors.

These were the days of the stock acting troop. Like in Shakespeare's time. Along with a very low budget... Though Ms. Milinaire, one of France's first female producers, ended up marrying the Duke of Bedford and restored Woburn Abby into some prominence. American Sheldon Reynolds lead a consortium to acquire the rights to produce Sherlock Holmes films at auction. After this series in 1955 he did another in 1969-70 starring Geoffrey Whitehead. This series is often praised for it's Victorian feel, but it was filmed in France with only stock shots of British iconic sites.

I wonder why did they made the actor playing Lestrade play several different characters in the series ...did they seriously believe that the audience wont notice ? The entire series is top notch and the budget spent on this must be very high compared to TV shows of that time period so they could had easily got someone else to play these characters ....The thing is Archie Duncan plays Lestrade so well and like with every well played character the audience begins to associate the actor with the character and its a great shock to the audience's suspension of disbelief when things like this happen .

Douglas K. Young, Thank you very much. I did not know that. I wonder then, why would any Scot name their newly born infant boy "Douglas," knowing that someone eventually call their precious little one, "Doug"? The 1st crush i had was in kindergarten & he was called "Doug." At 5 years old at Chrustmas time if should my parents have another child - a son - if they would call name him "Doug." I was so enamoured by my beloved kindergarten classmate, i wanted a little brother ti be named the same. My parents in a firm unison said an emphatic, "NO!" I remained a lonely, only child; no gift from my parents did i receive of a little sister or brother. I did not know "Doug" meant dog in Gaelic. Both of my American parents were decendents of those who were born in Scotland.

SPOILER ALERT: . . The ending was not well done. Were she the ghost, she'd have enabled MacGregor to find the "treasure" that the castle portrait would have no need of sale. The "ghost" would most certainly have known the location of the treasure. But in that case there would be no story. So the ending intended to be mysterious and/or cute, was not well done. But still a very good episode.
