Sherlock Holmes (TV-1955) THE CHRISTMAS PUDDING (S1E23)

Фильм және анимация

Hailed as the most faithfully filmed adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary characters. This acclaimed series stars Ronald Howard as the world-famous sleuth and H. Marion Crawford in a different portrayal of Dr. Watson than usual.
THE CASE OF THE CHRISTMAS PUDDING: When John Henry Norton is sentenced for murdering his first five wives, he threatens to kill Homes before he hangs. He also requests a Christmas pudding from Bess, wife number six. After she delivers the pudding, he makes his escape and goes after Holmes to make good on his threat.

Another brilliant performance from Eugene Deckers. 💕 It is one of the few situations when re-using a character actor in a series to play various parts isn’t tiresome, but delightful. Some series re-used the same actor or actress almost as the “oh-please, here-we-go-again, don’t-they-have-anyone-else-available?/character of the week”, and often a most obvious, annoying, and grating one at that. Some were certainly used to the excessive point of the viewers questioning the true reasons for their seemingly guaranteed re-appearances. Long-term contracts in a series are, or ought to be, for long-term characters. But that was never the case with Eugene. He was a wonderful addition to any episode, and wherever he graced the screen...

Patrick Leigh Presents yes shame that they aren’t longer though they’re not rushed. I love Basil Rathbones only appart from the first episode and the hound etc. They’re set in the year they were made to message about the war and Nazi’s . When you think about it that’s like Cumberbach and Martin Freeman . Only as it’s bnw it gets away with it to a lot of people.

@@martypel1401 Yes, and I have to say, I much prefer Sherlock Holmes fighting the good fight in WWII than Sherlock Holmes in the age of social media. Nothing against Cumberbach, because he didn't write the scripts, but he never had quite the same air of brilliance as other actors playing Holmes. Everything was much to hyperactive and dependent on special effects rather than on the actor delivering exposition in a dynamic manner. I think if they'd gone for a more subdued way of showing what was going on inside of his head, it might have worked, but, for me, it was just a lot of flashing text, images, and jump cuts. Rathbone presented Holmes as dignified, methodical, and cunning, Howard presents him as brilliant, eccentric, but noble, while Cumberbach presents him as rude, egomaniacal, and socially inept. It's not that I think that's an illegitimate take on the character so much as it wasn't executed very well. I much prefer the classic takes on Holmes than the modern ones.

Saying that I began to watch the Roger Moore version the other day , I love him as second James Bond tied with Craig Daniel just all three are great but Connery is my fave. I haven’t watched it yet I’m about to but I’ve loved him as the saint the persuaders so I’m about to watch his homes so here goes , an I agree with you just to be clear I just waffled on a bit there lol take care I’m gonna have a homes, an Christie few days then the audiobooks to listen to at night. @@martypel1401 Connery is my favorite Bond, too. I think it's because he's the Bond who just does not give a crap. He's just doing his job and trying to find whatever pleasures life has to offer in order to take the edge off his work. It doesn't even have to be a lovely lady's company to satisfy him, either. A good drink and a cigarette will do just as well for his version of Bond. I wasn't aware that Roger Moore had played Sherlock Holmes. I'll have to give that a look to see his take on the famous detective.

Watson doesn't come across to me as particularly bumbling in this series, he's a good, solid guy that you'd want to have on your side in a tight corner. Closer to the character in the books than the Nigel Bruce version. It's just a pity they lumbered Holmes with that ridiculous costume.

Hi, Sherlock Holmes fans. Please assist me in finding the title of an episode in which these things occur: 1. A man is found murdered at the foot of a bridge or at the docks. There is a lot of concrete and small passageways. 2. The victim has been strangled and is holding one half of a playing card (or ticket -- It's not the Split Ticket Episode). Something is written on the card. The killer has the other half of the card and information and will try to use the it to get lots of money. 3. The victim has torn the killer's jacket and is also clutching a small piece of cloth or threads. 4. The detectives believe the killer will make an appearance at an evening gambling party. The party is being held at the home of a female socialite. The detectives will be waiting for him. Thank you

Wondering why Eugene Deckers and other actors are "reused" as different characters in different episodes? It because it was filmed in Paris France, where there were not a lot of good English actors available. And the budgets were fairly low. So they cheated a bit by using the same actors a few times.

The perfect soporific. The introduction and terminal music make this silly rendition of the masterpieces of Conan Doyle's detective suitable for going to sleep by. Other than that, it's utterly a pure shambles in distance from those intriguing stories. As are most attempts to render them to film, including the Rathbone series. There's nothing intelligent about them beyond Rathbone's superb acting, the saving grace of that series of films. I would say his jingoistic lines can be forgiven him, because his ability to smoke was "spot on", as the Brits are wont to say. Conan Doyle's understanding of scientific method and forensics was first class. Leave it to the idiocy of copycat's version of it all to ape the idiocy of Hollywood to take masterpieces and reduce them to something akin to SNL skits.

Not faithfully filmed adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. They have nothing in common with Arthur Conan Doyle except for the names of the characters. The story lines are not adaptations of Conan Doyle stories. The Jeremy Brett series of Sherlock Holmes are the most faithful adaptations of the stories. And the acting is far superior as well. However, the best acting and the best Sherlock and Watson are in the film series starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
