@@suchahermit55 True, from the early18th century, based on the chemicals used in making hats, mercury. The original phrase was "madder than a hatter" and the cause was not really known until the 1940s.

Mad as a hatter is being confused here with mad as a march hare, the hare was not the hatter, “There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house, and the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea at it:.” From the actual book.

I’ve read the complete Sherlock Holmes stories from the pen of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Including the four novels i enjoy them yearly because they hold a great fascination for me. Moreover i’ve watched the movies and series on tv and video. I first came across this series on a channel in the UK called:’Bonanza Bonanza’ several years ago and, perhaps because it features a cast of characters like a stock company from the past;it feels so friendly despite its short 25-27 minute format, Think it is quite the greatest set of tales ever made. OK the scripts are based on the characters created by Doyle but the plots are almost those imagined by the makers that Sir Arthur himself could have penned for his readers. Absolutely magic-& i am grateful for being able to watch that obscure channel hardly anyone seems to have been aware of in my town. Also discovered’One step beyond’ which is worth watching. So if you fancy a binge watch one weekend & like the clarity and beauty of black and white photography give these a go and imagine you are back in the days when shorts like these would be shown as B pictures in our parents or grandparents cinema visits! Terrific and full of real character acting. 🎸

I also have read all the Holmes stories and seen most of the films and TV series, I recommend a series on youtube from Russia telling the Holmes stories, it is very good and mostly unwatched in the UK I believe

PRICELESS! The first 7 mins are a joy to see - Holmes and Watson at their best, each teasing and trying to get the upper hand. Brilliant! The best episode so far, with Holmes sounding incredibly like Wilfred Hyde White when discussing the missing dumbbell! Lovely location filming with Holmes looking correctly dressed for once in his rural deerstalker and cape coat. A joy to see! The only thing missing from this episode, for ultimate perfection, was a steam train! Maybe next time! KAN 6.19 UK

I'm just bingeing on how many things now adays that people can binge on. Hey, that means that I'm binge bingeing, thats another one for the list. Binge Spotting ,thats what I'll call it. New binge hobby. Off to read my , binge list and have a Binge Fest.

Another excellent episode of "Sherlock Holmes" with H. Marion Crawford and Ronald Howard. This series continues to uphold high standards of plot, pacing and acting. It is just over six decades old - very well done compared to then or even now.

I've been binge watching this during the Covid 19 Lockdown, May 2020! Wish I had found PizzaFlix sooner. But having the best crime buster ever and his sidekick on screen, is never too late! 🍻

I have found so many good movies over the years and when I looked who put them up, it was oftimes you and now you have done it again. What a wonderful collections of Sherlock Holmes movies. Thank you so so much for many a wonderful evenings watching movies from you, may you be blessed for giving us so much. Thanks again.

Alexa Penn Howard is really good, but so are the other actors. And so good together. LeStrade playing Scots characters is funny and sweet, but totally good acting. First time watching and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Enjoy the summer!

I like this series, however to me Rathebone and Nigel Bruce will always be THE REAL Holmes and Watson.

I don't know how you find these movies or how you post them, but, thank you. I enjoy them.

At 15:36, Dr. Watson saying "oh !" and "oh !" after the "cherchez la woman" (in french : "cherchez la femme") , makes me laugh a lot...

The dynamics between the main characters, Homes & Watson, are just the Odd Couple ( Neil Simon ) ten years before the N.S. stage play.They are very funny......we need more like this !

That is wonderful! This makes Ronald Howard my second best Sherlock after Benedict Cumberbatch. Also I can see how the makers of Sherlock (Mark Gatis & Stephen Moffat) could build on this for thier masterpiece by an exponential factor. Quite possibly Ronal howard's acting has had an influence on Cumberbatch. As most certainly on the story, dialgues, plot etc. In a nutshell it is safe to say this could be called a prequel to Sherlock BBC series.

The messenger boy who brings the note, he is the same actor who played Alfred in the case of the Holmes imposter, near the end of that episode.

I 'suspect' that Dr W fluffed his lines, getting the Bradshaws Timetable train departure minutes wrong,. They carried on smiling - and SH then niftily batted the questioned times back as he went through the door and popped his head back.

It was funny when Watson said! Ah but is it logical? I don't know that's what Holmes says all the time.

Unfortunately the 25 min episodes are not sufficient to do an intriguing mystery justice. Many aspects of the Birlstone case that were debated upon in the Valley of Fear was explained away in a couple sentences by the all-knowing inspector and Holmes immediately seizes upon the correct path. They shouldn’t have tried to adapt the longer Sherlock Holmes stories.

Nice tongue in cheek and polite dialogue.

There are two Dumb- Bells, Standing by the fire place.

I agree with the Wikipedia page regarding this... Howard Marion Crawford, credited as H. Marion Crawford, was cast as Watson and it was a role Crawford had long wanted to play.[2]Crawford desired to play Watson as something other than the buffoon as typified by Nigel Bruce's portrayal.[4] "I had never thought of Watson as the perennial brainless bungler who provided burlesque relief in the earlier portrayals. He is a normal man, solid on his feet, a medical student who gives valuable advice.... In other words, he is a perfect foil to Holmes' youthful buoyancy."[2] [Howard Marion Crawford]

Actually the Granada UK series with Jeremy Brett would have to be the most faithfully filmed of all the Sherlock Holmes stories. Accurate to the smallest detail and the actors portraying the characters exactly as written. And even more importantly Watson portrayed as written - an intelligent astute man. Indeed, as written, Watson narrates the activities of Holmes from the viewpoint of a close observer of events as they unfolded - there was never any suggestion of Watson being a bumbling fool in any of those stories

Call me OCD or morbid, but it was very difficult for me to keep my mind on their light-hearted conversation & joking about with the dead person still laying there & in the same room where the murder happened. Geez, the man had his head blown off with a sawed off shotgun at close range! Brain matter & blood splatter would have coated that whole room, not to mention the stench depending on how long he had laid there. Yet they acted like they were gonna have a nice little tea party. LMAO

What an odd story. I like the interaction between Holmes and Watson at the start, but since they only have 25 minutes to solve the case it means the case must be ridiculously simple. They make a big deal about the moat, and how no-one could get in, yet the crime turns out to be committed by someone who got in. Holmes goes off to the library, but it's never explained why. There are two suspects but we never even meet the female one. The guy, in the study of his own home, accidentally shoots his attacker with the assailant's gun during a struggle, yet feels the need to flee the "murder" scene; except it's obviously not murder. He flees the castle that he owns leaving his friend to likely face a murder charge for his own death - to do what exactly? The friend, who appears confident and smart, decides to pull the bundle from the moat based on the police detective pointedly telling him the moat will be drained, even though it's not his house so there's no motive for the police to inform him. It's obviously a trick, given the police and SH are in the vicinity and you know SH was fishing out of the window. Why was SH fishing out the window? He guessed there was something in the moat because he thought to bring his fishing rod with him, and the dumbell confirmed it. Given that he knows a dumbell is weighing down whatever is in the moat, and he guessed what the package was, why fish for it? All the fishing does is clue the guy in that SH might know about the package, making it less likely he could be tricked into retrieving it. And the Pennsylvania Gun had absolutely nothing to do with the story, except perhaps hinting that the owner was in America at some point, although every possible suspect and the supposed victim had been in America at one point or the other and you can buy American guns in England (many shotguns were American or Italian). This is definitely a show made by the comical Holmes / Watson interactions. The mystery is a distant second. Don't get me wrong, I like this show, it's just some stories feel like they made it up as they went.

I'm not sure he is American. They refer to him as a "foreign" friend of Douglas, and he explains that they met in Arizona, but I don't think anyone ever refers to him specifically as American...

This one confuses me. The intruder bent on murder is shot with his own weapon during the attempted murder. How is the victim going to be charged? With murder?

Homes as to try to keep Watson out of the way , Sending him some place , Homes know Watson will just get in the way. Cause Watson NOT to Bright.

hmm the story isn’t complete, the fear of Douglas wasn’t explained well. Why did he escape when it’s self defense? because in the original story, there were others after him. He’s escaping them. So he made it appear he was the one who died.

The ending doesn't make any sense as it's not a crime to defend oneself.

The easiest way to make TV or movie detectives appear brilliantly smart is to surround them with bumbling dimwits.... possibly necessary in 25 minute episodes, but lazy or inept writing for a script for an hour or more. Granada was successful with Brett, but they made Holmes more eccentric to do it. But Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto and others are all guilty. Instances are common in modern mysteries too, just with a different pattern, where the gifted detective sees the big picture and others are dumbfounded seeing merely incoherent aspects.

I don't know if you took up fishing hook and threw it out a kid today and hook them you probably wind up being arrested

This story is nonsense. If a man comes into my home with a shotgun and a desire to kill me fueled after ten years of anger, and I struggle with him and end up killing him, I just defended my life and that of my partner upstairs as well as my property. Why would I be afraid? Especially since I have a friend that will verify this man had a vendetta and indeed came into the home uninvited and unwanted? I will call my attorney tell him or her what happened and let the attorney deal with the police once they are called and come into the home to remove the body/investigate. Fleeing is dumb, covering evidence of a clear self defense is dumb. No moral country will require its citizens to allow themselves to be killed with the promise that their death will at least be investigated. This story is dumb and for Holmes to say ... "Think about that the next time you involve yourself in murder", that is nonsense! I hate this episode because it is absolute nonsense! What else was the guy supposed to do? Allow the murderer to murder him? and probably the partner? Please. And that whole intro at the apartment was dumb.

It's not hailed as the most faithful adaptation at all. That's a massive crock of shit and can't be backed up. Not saying the show itself is bad, but why bother with hyperbole? If anything it's one of the least faithful adaptations, tho to be fair they obviously weren't attempting to be faithful.
