Sherlock Holmes (TV-1955)) THE BAKER STREET NURSEMAIDS (S1E26)

Фильм және анимация

Hailed as the most faithfully filmed adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary characters. This acclaimed series stars Ronald Howard as the world-famous sleuth and H. Marion Crawford in a different portrayal of Dr. Watson than usual.
THE CASE OF THE BAKER STREET NURSEMAIDS: A baby in a basket is delivered to the bachelors at 221B Baker Street. The child was sent by Mme. Durand, wife of the kidnapped French inventor, for safe keeping. Holmes deduces the Durands have been taken by representatives of a foreign government anxious to possess Dr. Durand's new creation, the submarine. Once they determine which country, Holmes and Watson use an ingenious plan to gain entry to their embassy; they simply walk in announced.

Howard and Crawford - nice series of Holmes and Watson impersonations, with added humour and a soupcon of English charm - just enough to catch a well trained dive bombing Queen bee - just before the baby arrives by special delivery - perfect opportunity for the timeless rendition of male stereotyping and then, of course, we have the specialist in-put of Scotland Yard. It's refreshing to have a Watson that isn't a bumbling idiot. - the plot thickens ............................ very inventive stuff

Imagine watching these episodes in a cozy cabin in the woods by a crackling fireplace in Maine during the Christmas season. This was my introduction to this series some years ago. I have loved it since and continue to enjoy it over again.

Alex Selinow Lucky you, the cabin sounds idyllic. I’ve never had a cold Christmas, it’s hot and humid where I live. This series is more comedy and repartee than edge of your seat drama but so enjoyable never the less. Both men are very endearing.

I am watching from an old farmhouse in Wales. Built in the late 1200s. Walls literally 5' thick. Fireplace so big 5 Santas could fit in it at the same time! I love this old series. So much easier to be authentic when it was filmed only 50 years or so after the period. Plenty of original cobbled streets and gas lamps.

This now 63 year old series (it is now December 2017) never ceases to amaze me how good it was when produced. The plots, pacing, and acting are all top-notch. It compares favorably if not better than the television offerings of today. This episode maintains the high production values of the other episodes in this fine series.

The connection between Holmes and Watson is so endearing and Watson iso intrepid and Lastrade so inept yet likeable.

He played the character Reginald Kincaid-a drunk actor, who was hired by Dr. Watson (Ben Kingsley) to pretend he was Sherlock Holmes in the 1988 movie Without A Clue. @Ria “There’s a scene in this episode which reminds me of the film The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956).” Ditto. I thought the same even before I found your comment. I’ve given you a thumb-up, and I wouldn’t have replied with a comment of my own but for the fact that nobody else so far has done so. Spoiler alert: Just for the record and for those of us who haven’t yet made the connection, the relevant scene in this Sherlock Holmes movie starts at 18:23 when Watson whistles _Rule Britannia_ in the hope that the baby, in another room of the same building according to Watson and Holmes’s theory, will hear it and start crying as it did in the earlier scene when Watson invited Holmes to “sing it a lullaby” while Holmes was cradling the baby in his arms and the “lullaby” that Holmes chose to sing was _Rule Britannia._ In _The Man Who Knew Too Much_ the foreign prime minister (played by Alexis Bobrinskoy) asks the holidaying popular singer Jo McKenna (Doris Day) to sing _Que Sera Sera_ loudly in the hope that she’ll be heard by the McKennas’ kidnapped child Hank (Christopher Olsen) who’s reckoned to be in another room of the same building. In that other room Jo is duly heard by Hank and by Lucy Drayton (Brenda de Banzie), the co-conspirator who has developed a conscience, and so Lucy persuades Hank to start singing the song to tell his mother that he’s in the building.

+Randy Wiggins I am also delighted that I found this series. They are well cast and the pacing is excellent for a half hour TV show. What I don't understand with this one is why the supposed invention of a submersible ship (submarine) seems so novel in this time period. Submersibles were used in the War of 1812, or was it the Revolutionary War? ; i.e. the Merrimac and the Monitor. So silly of me that I've forgotten which one is was first used. Of course, they would continue to be perfected, but Lestrade acted like he had never *heard* of such a thing. This is the only glitch I've found.

The Monitor and the Merrimack were iron ships not submersibles. This is the time period that they were trying to design the more modern submarine with motor and crew.

Watson reading Punch as the episode begins...was that foreshadowing? Never saw them hit so many people! Not that there's anything wrong with that - on a case-by-case basis.

3:56 is pretty out of character for Holmes considering he was a skilled boxer. Same is true of the modern remake of this episode. Nevertheless, the light heartedness of this series is precious.

Maybe because they potray him as more younger version because in one of the eps Holmes can't really play violin, different with the original. So it might be their reason to make him like it but nevertheless i love their little "practice" sk comedic

I'm surprised that Holmes didn't take out his violin and try to kill the bee with hitting a certain note as he did with flies! I like all of the action in this one! But, that's not the correct way to punch someone, though I know that was the fighting style back in the late 1800s.

This tv series so wonderful. Like them all, it steers off course from Conan Doe a bit. The great constable who experiments chemistry with Holmes an axample. I don't remember this guy in Conan Doyle's worlks - am I fogeting a case? PS> doesn"t hold a candle to Jeremy Brett!!!!

I know he supposed to be Baritsu master or a boxer but they potray him more younger or comedic in a way that it still him. So like amateur violin player and can't really throw a punch, it's like still learning in a way.

Ok, so the count made it clear that his gang holding the family didn’t know about the message of pulling the sash. This is obvious when he told butler to inform them on what to do…so Watson n Holmes could have over powered the count and wimpy butler even if he pulled cord.
