Shep & The Limelites & The Heartbeats Story Chancellor of Soul's Soul Facts Show

NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED
Chancellor of Soul, Mike Boone's 'Show Facts' highlightes the history of legendary artists and their music.
This edition features two legendary group, the Heartbeats and Shep & The Limelites. Both were formed though the mastermind of lead singer, James 'Shep' Sheppard from
Queens, NY.
The Heartbeats were Shep's buddies from high school who formed the group in 1955.
They signed with a local label, Apt Records, a subsidary of ABC-Paramount, where they recorded a few sides for the company but was not promoted properly, so they left.
The Heartbeats were brought to Hull Records, located in the legendary Brill Building in New York, by William Miller, who was employed at the label.
Miller introduced them to Hull Records owner, Bea Caslin,
who was impressed by their vocals, signed them on the spot. The Heartbeats charted with 'A Thousand Miles Away'
although the disc jockeys promoted the A side 'Oh Baby Don't', the listeners thought differently and its B side,
'A Thousand Miles Away' became the hit side.
Shep was a very moody and egotistical person. He began
to question his royalty payments to Bea Caslin,. Later, Caslin sold the Heartbeats' contract and master recordings to George Goldner's Gee/ Rama labels, for
national distribution.

Released on Rama Records ' AThousand Miles Away'
hit No. 5 on Billboard's R&B charts in the winter of 1957.
The Heartbeats disbanded in 1959 when the group grew tired of Shep's unpredictable moods.
In 1960, Sheppard formed 'Shep & The Limelites' with two
members of the Videos, Clarence Bassett and Charles
Baskerville, who recorded the 1958 classic hit 'Trickle
Trickle' on Casino Records.
Shep along with Bassett and Baskerville composed an
answer song to 'A Thousand Miles Away' 'Daddy's Home'.
Daddy was a street term coined by the ladies describing
their boyfriends, lovers and husbands as a sweet talker.
Resigned by Sheppard's former label Hull Records,
'Daddy's Home' zoomed straight to the No. 4 position on
Billboard's R&B Singles and No. 2 Pop in spring of 1961.
The Limelites charted one more top ten single on the R&B
charts with beautiful, mystical 'Our Anniversary' in 1962.
The Limelites stayed for the next few years until Shep's
egotistical moods began to surface once again. They
disbanded in 1965.
On January 24, 1970 Shep Sheppard was a victim of a
robbery and was murdered on the Long Island Expressway. He was 35 years old.
Limelites member, James Baskerville died of emphysema
at the age of 68 on January 25, 2005.

In my opinion, The Heartbeats are the greatest R&B group of the 1950's! Shep wrote all the tunes which led to his questioning on royalty payments! Shep wrote for the Limelites as well and if you want to hear great music, listen to all the songs of the Heartbeats and the Limelights and you will realize what a great singer and songwriter Shep really was!

I agree 100%. Growing up in New York we would skip school every now and then and catch the shows at the Apollo. I was fortunate to see both the Heartbeats and Shep and the Limelites. The vocal harmonies of both groups were innovative and precise.

Shep's gorgeous tenor singing voice was unmatched. And as you said, he wrote all the Heartbeats songs as well as with the Limelites. Not to shortchange the Heartbeats, their harmonies were as gorgeous as Shep's lead. I love every Heartbeats song they ever recorded even though my favorite is Darling, I Want To Get Married. If they hadn't broken up after only a few years, we woulda had even more great Heartbeats songs to love and enjoy.

The Heartbeats are upthere with The Nutmegs, The Moonglows, The Five Keys and The Spaniels in my book. The late lead James Sheppard had a cultivating voice not overwelmed by the group's harmony. What a pleasure to see the surviving original group 40 years later.

Nice story about these two groups, the Heartbeats and Shep and the Limelites. "A Thousand Miles Away" was a masterpiece song, but I have it on 78, and "Daddy's Home" was another big one. And speaking of "Daddy's Home", Cliff Richard also did another cover version of this Shep and the Limelites classic from 1982, and he deserves it. Here is the full song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZ5kyceEYtHAYpc.html

James Sheppard killed himself when he pulled over on the belt pky. The New Papers reported exactly that. He was very distraught over the fact that he lost a law suit concerning "Daddys Home" sounding to much like "A Thousand Miles Away". Maybe it was the ending of " Daddys Home" that sounded too much like " A Thousand Miles Away " who's rights belonged to someone else. When I met Shep, it appeared that he was having a substance abuse problem which unfortunately affects too many of these very special gifted people. A good example is Zola Taylor of the Platters introducing Frankle Lymon to drugs that unfortunately had taken his life, in his grandmother's bathroom. He was so gifted it still blows my mind even today. I pray for all of them.

Chance B, you make brief mention here that the Heartbeats recorded some music on APT before going to Hull. I do not believe APT even existed at that time, nor have I ever heard about this anywhere else. What is the source of your information about APT?

cbl 4700 ...That's right!!! The APT label came into being around 1958. It was a subsidiary of ABC-PARAMOUNT, a division of Am-Par, Inc. The Elegants had a huge hit entitled "Little Star" on that label. The Heartbeats recorded first on the HULL label.

The name was Charles Baskerville, not Charles Bakersfield. The Heartbeats recorded "Tormented" for Network records out of Philadelphia, before recording for Hull. Shep & The Limelites recorded for Apt, not The Heartbeats. The members of The Heartbeats were Shane Sheppard (lead), Wally Roker (bass), Vernon Sievers (baritone), Robbie Tatum (second tenor) and Albert Crump (first tenor). This history was very sloppily done. It's not hard to get the facts right if you take a little time to do the research.

I totally agree. Robbie and Vernon are the only two original surviving members of the Heartbeats. Vernon still performs with other members keeping the Heartbeats' legacy alive. Long live the Heartbeats! They were and will forever remain icons of vocal group harmony. R.I.P. James, Albert and Wally! I know "They're Singing In The Sky".
