    I dont care about the story, or that it didn’t end. Thing for me is the exploration of the small town in the first entry. It was like being in Japan. I loved that. The second was good but it was a mess of trying to cram content within the limits of Dreamcast and I don’t feel much like k was exploring China. The third disconnects you even more somehow. I just want more of the first personally.

    Great video. I believe the token gambling system was a work-around to sell the game in China, but good lord it was a chore. I think there was to be one more chapter in 3 which was cut for time, and we definitely could have used it. I could ignore the annoyances if they just gave us more of the story. Even Niao Sun pulling off a team rocket disguise reveal could have had more of a build up and more than 5 minutes of screen time. She's been teased since 1999... Don't be stingy. I enjoyed my time with Shenmue 3 in 2019, but I don't see myself playing it again. Still hope for Shenmue 4 though 😂

    I agree with that Niao Sun scene. It felt like she got included just because fans had known about her way since Shenmue 2, but as far as actually making her seem like she's a part of the ensemble of casts, it was executed poorly. Same with that guy you fight before facing Lan Di (can't remember his name)

The shit kept putting me to sleep, and when I picked it up a year later, it was the same day I realized...I was 2 hours away from completing the game and finished it LMAOOO

    Shenmue 3 should've been released 17-18 years ago on the XBOX 360 as a launch title. Then, everybody would've been satisfied with it. I mean, that's what this game feels like: an old-ass video game from the mid-2000s.

    There are currently three franchises that had their own overarching narratives negatively impacted and rendered useless by their latest titles as grand finales (excessive fan service, retcons, contradictions, convolution, et cetera). - "Metal Gear" ("Metal Gear Solid 4") = answered questions that were never meant to be answered (many retcons and contradictions, especially to "MGS2"), made the whole story convoluted by focusing on excessive fan service (zero execution in plot and characters; "MG" and "MG2" included), and changed pretty much every character in a negative way ("MGS" and "MGS2" are included too; some characters from "MGS3" were changed into complete villains). - "Kingdom Hearts" ("Kingdom Hearts III") = concluded the main arc very poorly (convoluted story). - "Shenmue" ("Shenmue III") = made the whole journey completely pointless (Lan Di escapes). These franchises are useless and no longer respectable. They are what I consider "Game of Thrones" season 8 combined with "The Rise of Skywalker" levels of pointlessness. It is a shame.

    Wait do you mean MGS IV or MGS V? Lol If I'm not mistaken, Kojima didn't want to continue making MGS games (back since after releasing MGS 2), but apparently fans wanted answers to certain things left untold which is why he kept coming back. Though if you ask me, if fans are questioning things, I would rather leave it unanswered so that they continue to talk about the game. Like he once talked about wanting to leave the mysteries as mysteries (ex: The identities of The Patriot) but decided not to and it's like no lol that sorta defeats the purpose of a mystery lmaooo As far as KH, I only brought up 3 because like I said in the video, I don't really give a crap how the fandom feels about the game (I personally don't care for KH), but I at least respect the fact that it's a sequel with a similar waiting period like Shenmue 3 that did take the fact that ppl who were kids when they last played KH 2 are now approaching their 30s and concluded something major to make it not feel like a waste of time waiting. As far as calling them useless and no longer respectable, I wouldn't go that far into hyperbolic territory to call them that, but I do agree that the dissatisfaction these finales leave truly are a disservice to fans that merely wants to see these games continue to improve and shine a light on what makes these franchises loved.

    @@TessThe5th Any further entries after "Metal Gear Solid 3" is what I'm referring to. Chronologically speaking, the ending of "Metal Gear Solid 2" was intentional, based on how people should question reality (similar to "The Last of Us" franchise on how life works with decision making, often morally gray areas). Continuing past that in a cohesive manner was thematically impossible, and "Metal Gear Solid 3" further cemented that as a prequel.

    To me the 3rd game wasn't that bad. It's definitely disappointing and the ending is a giant slap in the face, while also trying to show love to the kickstarters. But it wasn't the worst. I feel like if he just brought it together with a good ending, it wouldn't have been soooooo bad. To me the problem started in shenmue 2. I don't remember half of the story because it's so convoluted, in both games. This game is peppered with the names and stories of the funders, but at the end of the day, just tell Ryu's story and "Wrap it up" lol. Now shenmue anime, that's some bland trash lol

  • @TessThe5th

    @TessThe5th

    Idk how you got the story in both Shenmue 1 & 2 were convoluted when the story is pretty straightforward as it gets in martial arts media. It's a revenge story that's been done over and over. Idk how you could also say Shenmue II started the problem when Shenmue II is regarded as the best out of the 3 with expanding upon the story and executing the story better than 1 did. Shenmue 3 barely moves the story forward by an inch. Though I have to say it's funny you call the Shenmue anime "bland trash" when it's pretty much... Shenmue lol. Hell, to the anime's credit, it takes some time actually expanding upon the other character's back stories that weren't told in the games (like Joy being the daughter of a cartel member and the Yellowheads killing her mother because of their beef with her father) and shows things that happened in the background came to be (like how Wong rescued Yuanda Zhu). The anime looked more like how Shenmue should have been handled in the games than the games itself. Arguably, it's better than the games. Though I will say, I did not like about how they approached the fight scenes with Ryo damn near one shotting everyone (esp. the martial arts guy who kidnaps Joy). But back to the games, idk how you can say Shenmue 3 wasn't that bad unless you're someone who's satisfied with not having to worry about paying attention to the story which in that case is alarming when the main focus of Shenmue is its story lol. Again...I'm not sparing mercy for a sequel many people have waited 20 years for only to be delivered that heaping pile of stagnancy.

    I wasn’t saying the first two games were convoluted, I was saying 2 and 3 were convoluted. Maybe 3 more than 2 but in my opinion we can’t say 2 is the best in the franchise if 3 is the worst. I’ve noticed that a couple shenmue fans enjoy the 2nd game but to me it’s my least favorite. I’ve only beat it one time and I’ve yet to play it since then. I will say that 2 does have the best music of the franchise. (Wise man’s quarter is my jam) And you’re right about the anime but the difference is playing a run of the mill revenge story is completely different from tuning in every Saturday night to watch a run of the mill anime. Shenmue 3 was dead on arrival but atleast the anime had a chance to be really entertaining. To wrap it up I can’t defend shenmue 3 because we both agree it sucks, I just don’t hate it. If you despise it at like a 10 I’m like at a 4. I’ve already concluded that we aren’t gonna be able to fight lan di and avenge our father’s murder. So my expectations weren’t high for 3. So I guess I just shut my brain off and get footage for my channel, at this point

    so you don't like this shenmue game.....because it plays like a shenmue game....huh. And Suzuki was pretty clear on this game not being the final one and given that the last game ended with meeting shenhua for the first time (a.k.a. the girl in both shenmue 1 & 2 covers) ending at 3 would feel very rushed and undercooked. I don't know why you were expecting to be the ending, when a little bit of research would have help you set your expectations

    If you actually watched the video throughout its entirety instead of running to the comment sections to demonstrate you like to put your foot in your mouth, I literally state in the closing part of the video that I did not expect for Shenmue III to end the series whatsoever since it's a WIDELY known fact for Shenmue fans like MYSELF that Suzuki has been clear about wanting to make 4-5 Shenmue games. I did however expect for Shenmue III to have much more substance than it does story wise to warrant itself worthy of being called a sequel instead of a sequel that progresses the story by an inch after 20 years. And according to the notes I use and even the sources I put in my video, I did more than enough research to make sure how I felt came from an opinion that wasn't incredibly shallow and immature for clickbait or "lulz" like some KZreadrs who call themselves reviewing games do. Trust me, if I wanted to go that route, I would have gone with my first or second revision of my review calling this game absolutely dogshit and just laughing/memeing at what I didn't about the game instead of explaining like an adult WHY I don't like it and what could have done to make III feel like it's a proper sequel and not Shenmue 2 expansion dlc. Like I stated, it should have concluded something major enough that it's seen as its own distinguishable arc. That does not automatically translate to conclude the entire series and you'd have to be incredibly dense to assume so. Also, Shenmue III plays nothing like I & II lmaooo I don't remember Shenmue I & II being so heavy on the mini-games that there's more mini-games than there is story content or making Ryo's stamina bar double as his health along with some other notable differences I pointed out in the video. Shenmue I & II, especially II, executed a much better balance between story progression and gameplay. I'm convinced at this point, you're just commenting to complain with some preconceived notion about anybody who doesn't give Shenmue III a positive review because I didn't give a game that had 20 years to be better than the Shenmue 2 backwash that it actually was more grace. And I'm not going to.

    I think they also really screwed up the world-building of Shenhua's village. Its description from Shenmue 2 clashes with the way it's presented in Shenmue 3. Shenmue 2 Shenhua claims she knows nothing about martial arts. But... there's a dojo. Very close to where she lives. And an arcade! An arcade and a dojo! When her life was supposed to be super-rural and nothing like Ryu's life! Whyyyyyyy.... Oh, and the game also backpedals on the magic sword from the ending of Shenmue 2. It's a non-magical letter opener now. Way to screw up what people were interested in seeing after that ending. Sigh.

  • @TessThe5th

    @TessThe5th

    That is actually a good point you made about the weird clash between Shenhua's countryside upbringing yet 10 minutes away from her house are capsule toy machines and an arcade. Looking back, it's so out of place. Not to mention, the time period the series takes place doesn't really lend their inclusion in this area any credibility. But like I stated, this game went incredibly foot first into being a collectible and gambling simulator. It's pretty ridiculous to see that even the lore suffers from what this game chose to prioritize.

    I love the first two games quite a lot. I've replayed them many times since the Dreamcast days. Meanwhile I cannot progress through Shenmue 3. I find its mechanics utterly intolerable. I hate having to manage the hunger/stamina bar which was a gross mistake, which is further compounded by forced training and gambling and virtually zero story. What a waste of everyone's time and money... Back when I gave my donation to their crowdfunding campaign, I really looked forward to it. Now the series is forever stained by this... useless piece of trash.

    Honestly speaking, the games haven't aged well and there are many games now that have eclipsed Shenmue. But what I do highlight and appreciate about Shenmue is that alot of mechanics and features applied to most open world games today heavily originate from this series and its innovations. It's okay to outgrow the game (it just happens like that), but for what it's worth, it's nice to still appreciate games like Shenmue for accomplishing what was not being commonly done around the time of its conception.

    You like the games on the Dreamcast when they first came out cause at that time open world games hadn't taken the world by storm yet and game such as Shenmue was still very new and still had much to offered and explore in its mysterious world within its scanline CRT glory. When you came back to it later on the remastered versions which are just upscale ports, not only did you had it on much worst platforms such as the PS4 and Xbox One but also open world games had evolve into something more vast and engaging, something that the remastered versions lost.

    I loved Shenmue 1 and 2 and it was the first of it's kind. It really did age like Milk though. and Sega's Yakuza Series has nearly everything that made Shenmue Good. I think Yu Suzuki must have a Giant Ego because he thinks People will keep giving Him money to make however many Shenmue Games he wants. we will never see the End of this Story. I don't think Shenmue's Story is anything special either. like if you've seen 5 Martial Arts films you pretty much know the Story already.

    Shenmue 1&2 are my favorite games of all time while shenmue 3 was the worst game that I've ever played. The stamina bar, food system and fighting system where horrible. It didn't feel like a Shenmue game at all! There's no way that they invested all of that donation money into the game. It literally felt like a game that a couple of high school kids made in their moms basement. I stopped playing half way through Shenmue 3 because I couldn't take it anymore. Everything about it was goofy. I would have 100% been satisfied with dreamcast graphics and the original formula. They didn't even finish the story so we STILL don't have an ending! Fans on the Shenmue dojo defend shenmue 3 and act like it's a good game when deep down they know that they're being dishonest with themselves.
