Ryo: Excuse me. Adam: FIGURE IT OUT!!!!!!!! Ryo: I see.
Shenmue 3 felt like Shenmue 2.5 to me. Don't get me wrong, it was an impressive Shenmue 2.5 given the budget. I think it just needed to get done to revive the franchise. Looking forward to part 4, with improved story writing.

I'm just disappointed there were no major story revelations in this game. The conversation with Yuanda Zhu and the cave in Shenmue II were spectacular and there really wasn't anything similar in Shenmue III.

@@CalebByRamen Nah the story IS pushed forward. Even in a very interesting perspective now. But the background lore itself didnt move much further (secrets about the mirrors and how lan dis father died, stuff like that). But there is some stuff happening that makes me very curious about shenmue 4 now.. [Spoiler] for example, Niao Sun has the Phoenix mirror now and she seem to hate Lan Di.. maybe ryo will have a future alliance with her? Because they are all heading to the mountain fortress now where both mirrors will be needed.

@@edstevens2772 "15 hours prior NOTHING HAPPENED" You mean they didnt tell us anything about ryos father in bailu and nothing about ryos and shenhuas past and characters in 2hours long conversations between them? oh wait.. Its true that shenmues story in 3 didnt move ahead very much (Maybe by one chapter), but in terms of character development, ryo got the biggest boost. bigger than in 1 and 2 combined.

The story progression was massively disappointing. I’m happy with how the game turned out visually, particularly with the attention spent to small details. The music was also a high point. Everything else dropped the ball. Giving up the VF-style fighting system for that dial-a-combo nonsense they stuck in there is something I can never get over, and if they ever do an S4 this needs to be addressed immediately. I’m so glad that S3 exists, but to be frankly honest this game didn’t deliver where it needed to. I have serious doubts that S4 would achieve the funding goals necessary if they go the Kickstarter route again. Hopefully the contacts they’ve established along the way can allow them to work behind the scenes in silence this time, and address everyone’s complaints with this flawed installment.

Yeah that ending basically tells it all, you did nothing particular in this game. Just the 3rd part in what will probably 5+ parts (hopefully) a filler game isn't unacceptable... just a little disappointing given the length of time even from announcement to release nevermind that whether they'll ever finish is totally up in the air. Anyway I like filler, I'm cool with it- I'd imagine others think differently. Again, it felt like a filler arc in some long anime like Naruto. Certainly NOT what people signed up for BUT considering it's supposed to be a long epic it's understandable that the mid episode would be.
I'd love to see more reviews from you. Very succinct and insightful!
The video I have been waiting for. Lets go! Your vids over the past 6 years is the reason I backed this. I'm so happy you have it in your hands now!!!

"It doesn't have to be about Shenmue." Sounds like an intervention to me. I'm glad you got your wish Adam, you did a lot of work and people appreciated it.
After I saw my brother’s collector’s edition I needed to get one myself, now it’s standing proudly next to Shenmue Yokosuka street map ( I have been there last year ). I still need to get a PS4 to play it 🙃 It’s a ton of fun communicating with Japanese that don’t speak English. I did once on a Shinkansen ride from Hiroshima to Osaka. Somehow we were still able to have a long conversation

Just beat the game, finally. I avoided spoilers and reviews for 8 months but was very curious to know your thoughts after following you and your love for Shenmue for years.
The first time I heard of Shenmue was in an original xbox game on the demo/trailer that they used to have. I remember being mesmerized by the Shenmue theme that would play in the menu. I then got a Dreamcast with Shenmue 1 and the Shenmue 2 xbox version. I never believed that we would get a third game since Sega got bought my Sammy and all the internal studios got merged and key people quit. The overall quality of Sega went down the drain soon after. So happy we got a third game. Yu Suzuki made the Sega Model arcade board, man is a legend and I will always support him. I enjoyed Shenmue 3 smf I still have issues on some things but I understand the limitations the team had. thanks for the honest review

As far as the chick with the broom, there's actually a whole optional side quest you can do for her, but I imagine a lot of people easily missed it, since there's no real need to go talk to her during that window of time that this quest is available. In this quest you save a sacred document of her temple. After helping her out, she definitely owes you a favor. And there's a good bunch of other dialogue you can have with her throughout the game if you go out of your way to talk to her, where she expresses her deep respect for Ryo, and hints at attraction to him too, which also I feel a lot of people could easily have missed out on. So it makes more sense that she's there at the end to help save Shenhua if you experienced all of that : )
Bookmarked for when I finish it. Yea, I'm still not done.
Great Review Adam! I loved Shenmue 3. My biggest gripe with the game is the voice actors being different like Nozomi's voice but it's been 19 years so I understand!

Great vid, Bud!!!
I've only put a couple of hours in the game. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed but I will say that there are some design choices that I don't agree with or simply don't understand (the fonts on the opening home menu screen when the game loads up are a prime example). Overall it's ok. Don't regret backing it, but I would have appreciated a nicer backers slip case for the game like the Bloodstained guys got. Don't worry Adam, I liked and commented and I've been subscribed for 6 years :)

I'm in pretty much the exact same position as you. The eating component is what's really holding me back from going whole-hog into it. It's having the exact opposite of what I believe was its intended effect and is a piece of micro-management that is absolutely unnecessary. I tried not to set my expectations too high since Shenmue II is my favorite game of all time, but I'm currently having a hard time mustering up the motivation to stick with it.

Great review dude, your explanation of the sales figures was spot on! I think overall, the companies involved probably expected and wanted more sales, that's obvious, but all things considered and the fact that the game was basically available to pre order 4 years ago, I think it's done well. Like Cedric said on Twitter too, sales are constant, they haven't just suddenly stopped. Collectors Editions are sold out everywhere (afaik), i'd argue it was more successful than I was personally expecting. Whether that can equate to Shenmue 4, we'll have to see, but I also feel like Yu has an ace up his sleeve in that, Shenmue 4 had already been worked on alongside 3 like with the original games. The games grew so much, it made more sense to split them and maximise the revenue, the budget, and for us, the gameplay. Whilst this may have made the story feel more lacking than the original 2 games, it'll be interesting to see how we feel about 3, when more parts of the saga are released. The decisions that feel strange to us right now, may have a perfectly reasonable explanation come 4. Like the sudden ending and weird transition to the Great Wall. I still feel like that is simply foreshadowing a scene that takes place in Shenmue 4, rather than Shenmue 4 suddenly beginning at the Cliff Temple or something. I'm sure as a Shenmue fan, i'd love to do a end of Shenmue 2 Guilin style walk but going across the Great Wall. Yu wants to share his love of China from his original research and exploration, hence the same locations being the locations he designed the story over. I highly doubt he would skip over something as magnificent as the Great Wall for the sake of a 20 second ending voice over wrap up...I think he was probably just too excited to not show what they've made there right now :)
I heard there's a mid January patch coming up. I wonder if some of these suggestions could be implemented in said patch (like the food thing). Also waiting on the Season Pass DLC drop (paid for), Any idea when this actually drops?

Just finished the game! Great vid! I loved it over all. Looking forward to Shenmue 4 :)
Love shenmue 1 so much and I am new to this game (sad to say in 2020). Looking forward to 2 and 3. Blows my mind how in depth it is. I love how 'slow' it is.. it is part of the charm. I so wish sega continued or xbox just took it on and we had for example 16 games with the entire story. Love this game and concept so much and am thankful you have encouraged me to give it a go. I love the point and click, the fmv, the virtual fighting element. How you walk as apose to a car. The real weather. The in game time. The collectables. I feel like I am in the game not just playing it. It is honestly magical. 'FREE' I look forward to playing the games that were inspired by this one. Glad I am starting here.
A very great honest review from a longtime fan! I recently just got into the Shenmue series with many thanks to my older brother who's also a major fan of Shenmue. Personally, I absolutely enjoy playing Shenmue 3 but I felt that the story and newer characters could've been done better. I wish there was more focus on Niao Sun and her introduction. I think the whole fake identity thing was unnecessary and wasn't fully developed. I also wished that they kept her original design. I'm kinda mad that they didn't put any variation of Earth and Sea for battles. It's waay too cool to not be included. Besides that, I enjoyed Shenmue 3 and I'm happy that it exists!
Great video. In-regards to the UK PS4/X1 split, i would say the PS4 is a bit more popular here, but it's far closer to a 50/50 split here than anywhere else in Europe, so i would say you're close enough!
Man I wanna hear you expand on you Shenhua theories now
I played Face Off and conversed with Shenhua every day in Bailu Village to get Shenhua to like me for the Kickstarter stretch goal "affinity system" . Later in Niaowu, I encountered Shenhua sitting behind the Save Shenmue Temple, we talked, and played "Face Off" one more time. I have a question you could perhaps ask Yu Suzuki: is this Niaowu Face Off instance with Shenhua a result of the affinity system, or is it just random for any player?
Man I really wanna watch this, but I still haven't been able to get a PS4 yet (why are they still so expensive all these years later!!??) I feel like Keanu Reeves dodging bullets trying to avoid any Shenmue 3 spoilers for the last month
I preordered shenmue 3 collector's edition from limited run games back in September. Recieved it last month. I will play it eventually, but I gotta play and beat shenmue 2.
"Height of arrogance" is a loaded statement. I don't think it's unreasonable for people to have criticisms, "artist's intent" is a strange catch all shield and hardly accurate, game dev is constantly giving up what you really want to do. To say any of the game's is exactly what Suzuki and co wanted to do just doesn't fit the reality of making games. You also seem to imply he didn't have "room" to tell the story, but I saw a lot of down time and fetch based objectives to extend the game. Everybody does it, to pretend this was chock full of plot is denial or deception. It's more fair to say your mileage will very if the game having so few bits of story will bother you or not.
@AdamKoralik
4 жыл бұрын
Criticism is fine, that's not what I'm saying. Let's say you're a painter. You have a vision for a portrait. Would you like if a bunch of people stood around you and said "make it this way" "make it that way" instead of letting you make what you wanted to make? Essentially that's the point I'm saying, let the man make his vision as best he can. Artists will always have to alter their vision based on production realities. But fan input should not dictate the story.

@@AdamKoralik I think that's fair, I hope he can move away from kickstarter, I think it is very difficult for anyone to really know what they'll really need. I know shitting on Epic is popular but one benefit I see is that they have the deep pockets and Shenmue is an ideal goodwill project.
Im currently playing shenmue 3 and enjoying it so far ..... It reminds me of Death Stranding.. Not in game but the creators... Im glad the creator's are still able to make the games they want.. Hopefully we have yu suzuki and hideo kojima around for a while making the games they want

Excellent Review, I think I agree with everything come to think of it, this week a finaly beat the game, I bought it on launch on pc, and both ps4 digital and physical but my hdd died about half way through the game so it took me a long time to bring myself to start it over, but I love it, really evolved and improved the shenmue gameplay, although I miss throw moves and having more story, Yu Suzuki can use this as a new base to built over so I hope he can find the funding and also release the anime that covers the first game
Only big issue I had with shenmue 3 was the saves when I’d save before going to sleep. It would sometimes ruin my game and it just wouldn’t work right and the menu wouldn’t pop up but I just started saving in menu(after loading my previous game that was working)and not before bed and didn’t have an issue after that.
Adam, do the UK numbers include Kickstarter and Slacker Backer copies? Most of the people I know that would have wanted a copy of the game would have already pledged on either KS or SB, so may not have purchased a retail copy.

Great video Adam. Glad to see you got your own figure in the game. I love Shenmue 3 just as much as I love the first two. Keep up the good work buddy.
Hey Adam, I think the stretch goal called “character perspective system” was supposed to let us play as Shenhua and Ren. I’ll bet that’s when we would have gotten to know broom girl and funny hair guy better. Didn’t make it into the game though. Maybe DLC?
@AdamKoralik
4 жыл бұрын
I believe that got scrapped entirely.
I enjoyed it, but I had curbed my expectations. Glad it exists. Only things that irked me (story wise) was that Ryo doesn't seem to recognize Chai and the supernatural elements are abandoned. Regarding the size of the game, I was happy, but I think that when Suzuki says the scope was bigger than he first hoped, I believe him because I think each game going forward will only be as big as the budgets he can get. Maybe it'd be better for Shenmue to go episodic.
To claim Steam & PC gaming aren't popular in Japan is a very c. 2013 take. Launching on Steam rather than EGS absolutely would've boosted sales there.

Ooh.. Love that Dreamcast case limited edition!
I’ve been waiting on this for weeks!!!Lol. Majority of things you’ve said I agree with. The issue with the health meter omg!!! It drove me crazy at first but then anytime my health got too low and I didn’t want to spend any money I’d just go to sleep so I’d have full health the next day. What u said about feeling unsatisfied with the ending I felt like that when I completed the game it was just very odd because I needed more information. I went back and played the last lap of the game again and I had a different feeling,as if ok well I knew this wasn’t going to be the end so I’m fine with how this ended. I’ve actually just ordered the collectors edition of Shenmue 1&2 HD (didn’t know it existed 🤦🏽♂️) Debating if I want to spend the money for the Pix n Love collectors edition because the resale price is just crazy to me. I have the regular PS4 collectors edition and the limited run edition. I’m just a huge fan of the game and glad it’s here finally.

What do you mean by shenhua is weird ?
hey adam. i've been wanting to watch this video for a couple years now, but i just hadn't been able to finish the game until yesterday. lol everything you said is pretty much spot on. shenmue 3 announcement was what got me to get a ps4. i put in the kickstarter. i got my copy 2 days before release date. i was so excited to dive in. then when i started playing the hunger mechanic turned me off so badly that basically i stopped playing at the mission of "get the trainer the expensive wine" i was like "eff this. i'm out." and the game has sat on my shelf ever since. a week ago i decided "you know what? im gonna give it another try before horizon 2 hits" and for some reason, it just all made sense. i kind of played it the same way i played dark souls 2, and just said "well, i'm going to have a halfway life bar the whole time, i may as well just ignore it" so i basically played the entire game on empty, and would eat before fights. lol but getting past the hunger mechanic. it's the same ol' shenmue, for better or for worse. everything i fell in love with the first one on dreamcast, and the second on xbox, is still maintained in the game. all that charm. in the end, i'm glad i was finally able to sit down and play it this week, and i just wish i had done it 2 years ago instead.
When I played Shenmue 2 earlier this year I was really blown away by the story and scope of the game! I was hoping Shenmue 3 would match it and I haven't had a chance to play it yet but I heard the story is lacking but I am still looking forward to playing it soon! It really sucks Sega released that Collector's edition of Shenmue 1 and 2 in Japan with an improved build of the game but took out all the English options I would have got that even though I really only encounter a few bugs in Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2 well I played it after the patches so can't speak to the bugs that where there originally!
QTEs are impossible... but I LOVE some of the fail sequences xD it's unfortunate that some of the streamers are like "I CAN'T fail! Cuz if I fail I FAIL!" No, actually if you fail you just start over, relax.
I love Shenmue I and II especially its story with its impactful moments like the ending of II. But i'm not sure if i should even play III because it really doesn't look like a worthy continuation. The game itself seems ok but the story itself seems "disconnected from II in some ways" (Ryo relearns things Yuanda Zhu already told him, III also retconned II's ending by ignoring the magic of the sword "like why was it removed from the opening sequence which basically is supposed to be a remake of II's ending? why aren't Ryo and Shenhua looking for clues as to why all those weird things inside the cave happened? Like the floating sword") In old interviews Yu Suzuki mentioned that magic elements would be toned down dramatically if III ever happened but i never expected to see III retconning stuff considering Yu seemed so interest in telling the full story, maybe he just regrets II's ending. To me that's probably the biggest disappointment with the game (It doesn't seem to be a bad game that's for sure, i'm sure many will find it very enjoyable) But to me this doesn't look like the continuation of what happened at the end of Shenmue II inside that cave. Honestly i feel like Yu just wanted to make a game instead of telling a story, that's ok but i wonder why he would choose something as challenging as Shenmue III over let's say a Virtua Fighter 6, although he deserves some credit for going for the harder route. (I hope Yu Suzuki eventually decides to officially publish the Virtua Fighter RPG books once he finishes the Shenmue series hopefully with 6 games, it would be interesting to read the full story in its original form, Virtua Fighter characters and all) (Those are just my thoughts and opinions) I hope everyone who got the game enjoys it and have a good time with it :) Hopefully you'll get Shenmue IV.
Part of me wishes they just finished the franchise with the original game engine and assets. But, from what I understand, the source code is pretty much gone at this point? So it's an impossible feat.
Around 22 minutes in when you talk about Ryo re-learning stuff he already knew, I noticed that too! Also In Shenmue 2 when you're walking with shenhua she mentions they dont have things like capsule toys and arcades in bailu... I'm guessing they forgot that 😂😂

Great video! totally agree with your review.
I loved the game and thought it was a faithful continuation of the series, definitely hoping to see Shenmue 4 in the future too. I found the food thing annoying at first till I got better at making in-game money, and I couldn't help but feel a bit bummed out that they put in a feature where Ryo can call his friends back in Japan, but that for everyone but Joy they used different voice actors. Lan Di's new voice actor was a bit rubbish and not at all like the original one too, Ren's new voice actor pulled it off because he sounded similar enough and his voice fit Ren's character so well. I also felt like it was over too quickly, that the Niaowu part of the game definitely should have gone on for longer, for example when Ryo finds the Red Snakes hideout, gets his ass kicked and has to get 5000 yuan to learn the reverse body check to defeat him, I thought this would be just the beginning of a long series of fights and QTE's that would add weight to the story, but instead as soon as I bought the skill book the game was practically over. The ending was short and underwhelming, with fights with Lan Di's goons reduced to single button QTE's. But despite its flaws, the fact this game even got made was basically a miracle and it was an absolute joy to continue the story after so many years. Dying to see where it goes next :)
I wish I could play as Ren. I enjoyed Shenmue 3, hope we get Shenmue 4 as soon as possible.

@@matthewgordon9296 Thanks, but I can't promise I ever would. I don't really do game reviews.

@@AdamKoralik I just highly respect your opinion. No need for full out review, just a quick DM telling me what you thought about it.
I love Shenmue and Adam I am super jeaulous that you own Shenmue 1&2Hd collectors edition but aswell Shenmue 3 collectors edition. My problems with Shenmue 3 was the stamina and the no having any Sega Arcade games like maybe Virtua Fighter Remix etc. and the fighting mechanics from Virtua Fighter was still awesome.
Great video, I thought Id never see the day when this game was released. Don't be modest but I honestly think you had a ton of influence on making that happen. Everyone who is a fan of this series owes you debt that cannot be re-payed. Thank you.
If shenmue 4 does come out I wonder how long we have to wait. Most likely it will come out for ps5
I really hope Shenmue 3 did good, but I’m not super confident. I work at the biggest Best Buy in Michigan, and although we had a few store pickup orders on the day of release I don’t think i ever saw a copy of the game sell in our store. I also asked the employees who work in gaming (who know I’m a big Shenmue fan) and they all said they didn’t sell any copies at all on launch week. Now my guess is that most people who were going to buy Shenmue 3, probably already got it with the backer program, or just pre-ordered it, but honestly I was really sad that I didn’t see any copies sell in my store. Now this is just one store. I don’t know how it performed in other locations, I don’t know how many copies we did ship to home/pickup in total, I don’t know how it sold at GameStop or anywhere else. But I’m hoping our store was an exception. But I do agree with most of your review. I ended up buckling and picking the game up on launch, and honestly I just really enjoyed just playing Shenmue again. There are some quirks and some minor fixes I think they could make, but overall I’m happy with what we got.
I overall really did like Shenmue 3, though I will be honest and admit that it felt like set up for Shenmue 4. Not a bad thing imo. I can't wait for Shenmue 4. I'm thankful though that Shenmue 3 doesn't have the same level of cliffhanger ending that Shenmue 2 did.
Absolutely loved it, hated the change of moves at first but still got hang of it in the end, only things I didn't really like was having to get back to wherever by 9pm and Nozomi's voice

Oh yea and not being able to run often due to losing HP
Hi Koralik remember me? We talked about the SEGA Dreamcast Before and a few times about Shenmue a year ago. I bought the Day 1 Edition BD. I am positive that this game will sell millions of copies within 2 years once the exclusivity at Epic store expires and will be available in Steam by November 19, 2020 next year. The players feelings about this game is mixed yes there are some things we do not like about the game but it is still a huge improvement. Such a small budget but I consider this an AAA game in my point of view. Slowly this game will be popular even for the new generation of players. They will be SHOUTING FOR A NEW SEQUEL!
Adam, thanks to u I'm getting shenmue 1&2 before Christmas. Im a total new comer. Got any advice before Tuesday?

I think you forgot that the Fat guy martial artists was the STUDENT of the cormoran fisher master. thats why he joined at the end. And shiling(the broom girl) told ryo she wants to help him somehow, when the red snakes destroyed her temple. But ryo rejected her offer that time. so they had motives to join you. But i agree with you, they didnt really flashed their characters out enough. I also see shenmue 3 as like the "training arc" of the series.
Pretty rad, I started playing through the first two on PS4 and planning on getting 3
I just beat the game at midnight last night and I get up in the morning and see this review. In one of the conversations with Shenhua you can talk about how you didn’t like carrots and say you still hate them or you’ve grown out it.
