Shenmue 3: The Digital Foundry Tech Review - A Quality Sequel To A Timeless Classic?

Ойындар

It's taken 18 years for a sequel to be delivered to Shenmue 2 - a genuine classic for sure, but also a major flop when it launched. By all rights, this sequel shouldn't exist - especially when it's created with a fraction of the resources enjoyed by the original games. But exist it does! So how did Yu Suzuki bring this game to market and crucially, how good is it? Is this a worthy sequel? John Linneman has answers.

Shenmue 3 is much more than I could've hoped for. I'm 16 hours in, and I'm loving it. The world detail is incredible. And to be honest, I think people have become way too critical on games in general. What Shenmue enable us to do is appreciate the craftsmanship of a game, especially due to the slower tempo provided. Looking at every little item, architecture, flora, design of labels, signs, etc. I'm thinking.... "this is hand crafted stuff".... it's incredible when you think about it. that somebody has been modelling and designing these things by hand. Not to mention programming all the systems involved. Dialogue, fighting, mini-games, inventory, shops etc. For a team this small. I'm amazed. I don't know how they managed to squeeze in so much under such a strict budget.

Don't waste your money on this game, I own it and it really is terrible.. These guys are sugar coating the hell out of it. This channel makes great content but they often gloss over the blatant shady practices within the industry.. The devs were handed six million dollars with absolutely no strings and the way the money was spent is a complete mystery. That's a huge red flag and normalizing this practice is a dangerous direction for the industry to be going in.. But DF won't say shit because it could hurt important relationships that they have within the industry..

@@gstylez0107 Dude, i'm a Shenmue fan. I played and loved Shenmue 3, still, i can respect your opinion. But, they took the money and made a game wanted by many fans. Period. If you don't liked the result, that's a shame. Many fans loved, but this is a game, even in the Dreamcast's Era, very polarized. Your point of view is just your opinion. YS NET put little details, like DF said, into many places. They did not use modern techs in many aspects, but their care is visible in details - like bottles and random itens with detailed prints, and that very unique OST style and dialogue - some folks loved, but many hated too. If you hate it, don't buy it (like you did). Simple as that. If you pay real money to a bunch of "shady folks" (in your point of view), then... they will not stop. This franchise received so much hate after that 130 millions was invested by Sega in '99 - and, after that, their console failed. This love / hate cycle will never end within Shenmue's production. This Kickstarter money (+ Sony, DS and Epic shares) is a tiny portion of a saga planned to be as big as possible.

Honestly, even from a pure tech perspective the lighting and texture work are really great. I've been playing Final Fantasy XV and Fallen Order (both super expensive AAA games that look gorgeous) and Shenmue's world textures and lighting go toe-to-toe with those titles (this is less true of the Chobu area's textures though which aren't quite as refined). Very good leveraging of UE4 though. In fact, Shenmue's character models (if you ignore the faces) are also quite technically accomplished, too. It's just that when there is a rough spot in the presentation it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Look, it's a love letter to the fans. The game is for the fans. It was made for the fans, the fans are happy with it and how they kept the style, the stiffness and the voice acting, the chill music and the weather and time system the creator of shenmue said when he came out in 2015s e3 "let's make shenmue 3 for the older fans" the fact that it looks like this now is actually breathtaking compared to what it would have looked when he delayed it in 2017. The fans got exactly what they wanted and if this was looking like death strandiing or the last of us 2 the fans would not be happy. it's a fans love letter and the reviews are good enogh so far for the planned 4th and 5th game that was supposed to be getting made in 2003. End of discussion. We got what we wanted and it's a very long well thought out game, i would rather play this 100x over a very short game with amazing graphics.

A lot of site reviews, IGN and another give it mediocre reviews. Based on what they want, its meh. But as the fans, such as myself i am very satisfied. I dont care if the game graphics look top notch or how they did back when 1 and 2 came out. The game looks graphically looks like a polished version of 1 or 2. The game to me, "feels" just like a sequel if it came out right after 2. And i think thats all the people that wanted Shenmue 3 wanted. Some reviews were mocking some of the dialogue how some responses didnt make much sense. 1&2 were just the same, so the dialogues felt perfect. We the fans just wanted the sequel and we got it. Also minor minor spoiler, The Shenhua dialogue when she question the thug....Histarical, ding ding....I almost died laughing.

Its to create better and slower pacing. Like classic resident evil door load screens. Its best to get excited for the next area. I think load screens as long their designed with the experience in mind can be great. Shenmue 3 does have some in between but its kinda weird hearing music changing everytime you walk into a place that didn't had a load time in between. Maybe a little cutscene would do great.

I'm still not sure why Yu didn't try to license the Dragon Engine from SEGA for this game. It would be a perfect fit. TBH we don't know if the Dragon Engine is up to the task. We've never seen it do foilage, NPC scheduling, day-to-night transitions (in real time!) etc; And I think it is unlikely to feature these out of the box given that the engine was made/only used for one series that has no need for the above. The additional time adding all these features may well have simply made it not worth the effort. The Dragon Engine may look nice, but that doesn't mean it can do what Shenmue would need it to do.

Because amid all of John Linneman's mixed reactions to the graphics and performance, his words to me indicate that Shenmue actually looks and plays better than I feared it might based on other's negative criticism. In short, it's a great game. I'm grateful that DF showcased the best in visuals that the game has to offer, it increased my respect for Team Yu Suzuki because they knew what kind of graphics engine they had at their disposal. I like John's comment that Yu Suzuki's graphical priorities haven't changed with Shenmue 3: It's still about flawless main characters and compromised NPC's and that isn't a bad thing especially if your a Shenmue veteran.
