Shelling Gulf Coast sandbars and islands from a kayak. No boat, no problem! PART 1

Shelling is a lot of fun, especially when you know what to look for. I help you learn and identify shells you might find if you visit Southwest Florida. I'm normally walking miles and miles of beach, but on this trip my friend and I used kayaks to get over to a couple of huge sand bars and an island off Marco Island, Florida.
I was hoping to find a Junonia or maybe a big ol' conch however it seems like us shellers are pretty serious about shelling, so even though we were on a sand bar, we were running into other shellers. I even ran into someone who recognized my voice from my KZread videos, which was cool.
Shelling Gulf Coast beaches is awesome! I am originally from NJ, so I grew up thinking the ocean was always cold and rough. Not down here! The gulf waters are usually really calm and in the summer the water gets really warm - it took my brain quite a while to really understand the gulf water was warm. There are some days it's not welcome because it can get pretty hot here in the summer but that's what swimming pools are for :)

Our Lighting Whelks here in Georgia, are a Dark purple and cream colored. I have several the size of your hand. And I have several Lettered Olives that I collected on Tybee Island years ago. I am an avid sheller and advocate for sand dollars. I've seen people leave the islands with sand pails full of live sand dollars and then when they leave, they dump the now dead sand dollars in the trash cans. It upsets me to no end. Even with the signs, they just go on the sand bars and pull them out. So than you for your education on the critters

Oh that stinks. I'm not a big fan of telling people what to do, except when it comes to taking live critters. I've intervened quite a few times to make sure the creatures go back in the water. My dream is to someday make it down to Fort Myers. Thanks for all the education of my favorite pastime of shelling. There are so many neat beaches down here - I am so fortunate. I hope you get to make it down here too! I have mentioned both of the items you are asking about: why olives are so shiny and the difference between a shark eye and a gaudy, so I want to make sure my new viewers get the info but not bore my viewers that have been with me for a while.
