Shelley Long Unrecognizable After Skipping ‘Cheers’ Reunion 2024

Ойын-сауық

She was the light of Sam’s light, a sweet dose of reason and dismay at the bar. But Diane Chambers gelled with the staff and patrons of Cheers very differently than Shelley Long got along with the cast… or, didn’t. Did she leave Cheers with bad blood? Was that why she wasn’t at the much-anticipated Cheers reunion at the Emmys?

Those WERE more challenging programs. Ms. Alley’s time was spent on “I Love Lucy” types of works. “She’s so whacky”, repetitive, difficult to experience, real nonsense. It became a parody of itself (“SNL”, anyone?). Still, either way, I’d prefer those “Cheers” shows to almost all of the crap being offered nowadays. Ah well. “C’est la vie”. 🤔😐

She was the TV Commercial Spokeswoman for Home Makers Funiture. Here in the Chicagoland area back in the late 70's. When she started to get famous she cane back and did a couple more commercials for them. (It was very nice of her.) Also, Garry Coleman got his start in commercials for 1'st. Metropolitan Builders. Again, in the Chicagoland area in the late 70's. I remember them fairly well. They were always on TV. Especially, Saturday mornings and afternoons.

We age. It happens. I always liked that Bettie Page (the “Pin-Up Queen”) stopped, moved on to (some good, some tragic) other things, & wouldn’t stand to be photographed again. She wanted to be remembered as the beauty of her professional career prime. Then again, we didn’t have the social media outlets & big dollar offers from corporations that we now do. Hmm. 🤔 Whatever, I find hers to be a romantic (in some ways) show of dignity. An inspiration, actually. Either way, people age. Ah, well. 😊

That was so long ago. A very classic show. Several classic shows really. I would prefer they leave those classics where they are. In the beautiful space in our minds. it is completely unfair to all the actors to bring them back as seniors and expect the same sparks they had when they were young, strong and stupid. And beautiful. All of these great people have been through so much over the decades, i am just glad that most are still alive and doing well.

Cheer was two shows: The Shelley Long version and then what I consider a reboot with Kirstie Alley. The two actresses were so different that it just wasn't the same show. Shelley and Ted shared a unique on-screen chemistry that was magical; Kirstie and Ted didn't have that (not their fault), so it took the show in different directions. I loved both shows, but if I HAD to choose, it'd be Cheers 1.0: Shelley and Ted. And without that Cheers, Cheers 2.0 never would've existed.

She was only able to get 1 role after her cheers stint, I believe it was the money pit...I may be wrong, but at the time the cheers series ended, it was a period of real tough competition, she was up against such stars like Julia Robert's, Michelle Phiher, Demi Moore, etc....Hollywood can be a cruel place & industry, the only ones able to sustain their careers were Ted Danson, Kelley Grammer, Bebe..Kelsey's girlfriend, rest of the crew was typecast, I believe one other had a role on startrack and did weight loss commercials. There is no guarantee of success, look at many child stars that do nothing after the role that made them famous! Many have died, sadly by suicide!

The “Rebecca” character WAS annoying. ‘Course, “Cheers” had become like a bad habit by the time she was introduced (smoking, (ironically) drinking, etc.). We watched ‘cuz that’s just what we did on Thursdays. The writers started to get lazy & the show was so stale by then (“why try when it’s SO profitable“). “Rebecca” was a great idea, just poorly executed y the writers. Not that Kirstie was to blame, her “whacky” adventures were just so hackneyed. “Rebecca” was annoying, not Kirstie. Too bad, really. Kirstie was a great comedic actress. She could’ve “knocked it outta’ the park!, if given a fair chance. 😐

If you post a video with a snarky headline, you should count on getting a fair share of snarky comments. You've clearly done some careful research. Why waste it just to try to get a few extra views?

Shelley Long years? - Creative. Challenging. Whimsical. Kirstie Alley years? “Same ol’, same ol’”. Tired (& tirING). Goofy nonsense. They each have their merits. It’s just that the Kirstie years were more typical than original. Ah, well. “C’est la vie”. I like ‘em each better than half the shows (“reality”, “news worthy”, depressing, heavy “drama”) being offered nowadays! 👍

Kirstie (through no fault of her own) was a cartoon. The writing on “Cheers” started to be more plebeian than original after the “Coach” & “Diane” characters were gone. “Woody” and “Rebecca” were like any other “whacky” characters from any other sitcom in the history of television (all the way back to “that “whacky” Ed on “The Honeymooners” - in the 50s!). “Cheers” became like a bad habit. We watched it ‘cuz that’s just what we did on Thursdays. It was really bad In its dying days. 😐

Shelley Long was fabulous in Cheers and elevated Ted Danson's character from a "hound" to a conflicted man in love. Kirsty Alley's character was as superficial as Danson's and together their scenes were predictable and boring. The show without Shelley was flat.
