I remember when you had shellies before, a few years ago. Fell in love with them then, and still love them today. As I'm not able to have fish tanks anymore, due to health issues, I am really happy to see you have been keeping them again. They are such fascinating little guys. Thanks for stocking these little darlings again!

I think it would be cool if you took the shells out, flattened the sand, replaced the shells and then took a time lapse of the fish's activities. That would be quite interesting.

The thing is that the fish shaped the sand in their own liking, and that those shells are their territory... if u took out the shells, it could be a disaster!!!

i do have the n. similis myself together with some n. marunguensis. the only issue with having shell-dwellers alone in a tank, is the upper realm of the tank since they obviously stick most of the time at the bottom. the shells i use are collected by myself. in europe there is a bigger snail Helix pomatia which shells are perfect for the n.similis.

I kept a colony of these for 3 years until I had to move. 75 gallon tank with 4" sand and tons of shells. Honestly I never did a water change the entire time but only fed them a tiny pinch of NLS small pellets once a day. Always had to crunch some food to dust so the little ones could eat too. It was my favorite fish to keep and I still miss them. When I shut the tank down there were probably 50+ in there.

In my experience you can keep a variety of other fish with them as long as they tolerate hard water and a higher ph. It also helps if they tend to stay in the Middle-Top part of your aquarium. A few varieties of Rainbow fish, tetras, barbs, or danios work well but it will most likely depend on the size and scape of your aquarium. Keep in mind that any sub-dominant males will utilize the middle/upper portions of the aquarium so I would recommend allowing your Similis to grow out a bit and see how they do then add other fish if you would like some variation.

Also have you tried a power head or air driven system that redistributes the water to another filtering appliance?I am really interested in your feedback on these questions because you are about the best source for us midlevel enthusiast available.
