Drive of the 1987 Shelby Charger GLHS. This super clean, 2.2 Turbo with only 61,000 miles is rust free, and completely ready for the road!

That twist-knob sunroof was great. There was a 2 inch overlap under the entire glass area so you could leave it open in light rain. And you had a great stash area for stuff you didn't want the cops to find.

A modern classic.
The first new car I bought was a 83 Shelby Charger. It was the fastest American car you could buy. 110 hp and 2300 lbs. I truly believe it was under rated it handled like a go cart on those back country Marin county roads. The first American car with 50 series tires and Halogen headlights. I put 175,000 miles on it and never changed the clutch or brakes. One of the only things that ever broke that I remember was the clutch cable. People would look at it and ask "why did you buy this car" then I'd give them a ride and they wanted to buy one. Mine was Santa Fe blue with silver stripes and they only made 5200 of them. I have fond memories of that car.
in there time these cars where really good. it really suprised the heck out of some other more expensive car owners how these little cars would beat a lot of the more expensive high performance cars. Now i like dodge, if you look in the pictures next to me, you will see that i own a 2005 dodge neon srt4 pretty modded out, but they really do well, with lots of power. also the dodge omni turbo was a fast little car as well. i like them all. go MOPAR

Had a SRT4 also put 237.000 miles on it only problem was a bad turbo seal.Dodge missed the mark with the new Dart everyone thought it would be the new SRT4 they should of did the same engine as the SRT4 with the iron block but dodge screw up that car at the get go shame it will never come back.
I bought a brand new 87 Charger 2.2 at Southside Dodge in Kissimmee.I saw an 86 Shelby Charger at the dealer with an AUTOMATIC transmission.Black with grey interior.!Now that's rare.My charger had the power hatch and a tilt wheel.
The sunroof comes all the way out. A package is available for 300 hp. And yes only 1000 of the GLHS were made. These will still surprise the heck out of even today's go fast hatches. Beautiful car.

No package was 300HP... the most you could squeeze from the 2.2 litre was 155 Hp with DIRECT CONNECTION parts catalog ! 175HP was the turbo II mitsubishi 2,5

@@thatoneguy6776 super 60 package. Look it up. Pulled mine for my 85 out of a wrecked omni that had it. 260hp to the wheels.

@@thatoneguy6776 Turbo 2 was not a Mitsubishi. This car in the video made 175 horsepower from the factory, so 155 horsepower isn't close to the most power you can make with a 2.2 liter. My car makes a little over 300 horsepower and I know of many others that make more than mine. Turbo 2 was an intercooled 2.2 turbo. Later 2.5 liter turbo 1 cars came with a Mitsubishi turbocharger.
It looks in a good condition, beautiful Car ....

Very good, was a great car.
I had the burgundy one with louvers. Replaced intake manifold, injectors, moved ECM to inside passenger toekick, replaced fuel pump, myself, and after 11 trips to dealerships and talking directly to Chrysler drive-train engineers and following all their recommendations, I finally sent it off to be scrapped. Loved that car but it was the worst money pit I ever had. Damn shame because the car was awesome when it ran right.
So familiar. Owned an 85.
Oh the memories..
I always liked these cars back in the 80s. I would love to do an SRT4 swap in one of these.
Very cool car.
My 83 had no options as I recall, but it did have the power hatch release.
What happened to the outside viewing. You never showed it.
I hope you don't sell it to some kid who rags it out!
There were only 1000 of these made. What number is this one?
Is this car sold? If not I would be interested if the price is right I collect these.

Sorry, sold long ago.
How much did she sell for?
I remember in the 80's when they pitted a GT 350 against an Omni GLHS. On the track, the Omni couldn't get around the Shelby. Later, they switched places on the road course and the Omni slowly pulled away!

+mhickory A long time ago. I read the history from wikipedia etc.. Seemed a little vague but Shelby bought 500 hundred of them and converted them to the "S" designation. I didn't remember seeing the "Shelby moniker on the first ones I saw. I thought I would have remembered that as I have owned Shelby's and I am into them. CRS I suppose. I currently have an 87 Shelby Lancer. Everything is great except it is an automatic and the Pioneer sound system went south. A vw bug will pull it off the line but stomp on it from 25 or 30 miles an hour and it shifts down and is strong. I will make turbo mods when I go through the engine. It has 110 k miles on it and I believe there is a wrist pin tap.

+Chuck Holmes The GLHS is in fact a Shelby. Plain and simple. The GLHS was also faster than the Porsche and Ferrari of the time around a track. Shelby received so much hate mail from Ford fans that he went to a track and invited anyone to bring their GT350 to try and compete and no one showed up. For good reason.

+PyroBlonde7777 Never saw a Shelby moniker on the GLHS although I am sure Carroll had his hands in it and the developement. My Shelby Lancer does have the Shelby badge on the rear deck lid and at the top of the windshield. Maybe Carroll wanted to make sure it would work before putting his name on it.
So much about that music this Dukes of Hazzard car do the jumps with it

Neither of those were rare options. Standard on all '87 Chargers.
How much did it sell for?

almost $10,000 back then...thats $24,000 in todays money... for 146HP
Dash plaque #???? number what of1000
Corner likes it's on rails....
It more likely has 161,000 miles on it... the spedo only goes to 99,999 then it flips. Unless grandma only drove it to church on Sunday's...
He prefers to take it easy until it warms up...as the tach sweeps up to 4000 rpms!!! 🤦🏻♂️
You'd think Dodge could've installed a less ugly looking steering wheel
i had one of those new... biggest POS ever.... broke front axle 3 times, because it was not designed to handle more power or torque than the base 99 HP.... $1,200 each time, NOT covered by Dodge 5 years / 50,000 mile coverage. They told me i "abused" the car.... hard to do with the meager Turbo's 146 HP
@GLHS592

If you broke the front axle, you probably were abusing it. If you had 146 horsepower, you didn't have one of these. The GLHS 2.2 turbo 2 made 175 horsepower.
I had a 87 Shelby z . garbage.
