Kazzer introduces the long overlooked low budget performance sports cars from Caroll Shelbys Chrysler turbo days, the 1986 Shelby GLHS (sedan) and the 1987 Shelby GLHS (coupe)
These weren't just Shelby stickered up Chryslers, the GLHS series of cars were taken to Shelbys Whittier CA skunkworks facility where the performance was bumped up all around and limited editions were made..

    Man Those cars were so underrated and underestimated by lots of ppl They were decent cars that packed some decent punch and got decent mpg's . The omni looks cooler than the charger in my opinion 80s cars still look cool to me I'd get one if I could find one that was still in great shape

    I had a '87 Shelby Charger GLHS equipped for racing. It was one of the crappiest cars I've ever driven, it was never anything but a problem. Best day of it's life was the day I sold it for scrap.

    They must have stripped it down a lot to get the weight to 1800#. Mine is stock and it weights more than 2400# (still a featherweight by modern standards).

    @DdgeShelby That bit about them being titled as Dodges meant further that the front-drive 'Cuda never took off, of course the main reason being Shelby's objection to the Plymouth version.

    I Owned a Shelby Charger and my roommate a GLH turbo Omni back in the early 90's. They were fun, quick cars back in the day, but that was when 300hp was considered the benchmark of all benchmarks. Owning one today would only be for nostalgic purposes really, you pull up to a stop light next to a Toyota Camry, or any other modern sedan and you wouldn't stand much of a chance. Not like back in the day when you could surprise unsuspecting 5.0 and Z28 owners...

    +Chris D. You're right, but the technology in today's cars are able to put most, if not all of the power to the ground, and these cars were notorious for traction loss, especially with mods. So although you may still be relevant in a 1/4 mile situation on a track, the old days of stop light racing is just no longer what it used to be with these older gems.

  • @DdgeShelby

    Do you think modern technology hasn't been applied to these vehicles? I had a Halltech Platinum standalone on mine 5 years ago, went with the T2 style intake/induction setup.. If you have one of these cars, you're not keeping it stock.. Folks have been adapting twin cam heads to the 2.2/2.5 bottom ends for years, they bolt up.

  • @OldskoolHiFi

    @OldskoolHiFi

    +Chris D. Of course with enough money you can overcome most of the problems I speak of, I was speaking from a near stock with maybe a few basic mods standpoint. I was simply reminiscing how back in the day, like in my case for example (Early 90's) you could hop into one of these cars (completely stock even) and have your way with a vast majority of vehicles out there, my comment was more geared towards the fact that 20 years later, if i still had the SAME car, that's just not going to happen. I guess I could have been more specific, I mean if I dump enough money into a Neon I could make it faster than a Hellcat, but why? I still think these are cool cars, I would not mind having another someday, but I would likely stick my money into making it a bit more reliable if that's at all possible, lol.

    Stock the GLH's ran in the 14"s in the quarter mile 300 hp will get you easily in the 13's they don't weight that much a new Camry would get smashed by one of these things nowadays even with the old super 60 setups my friend James Reeves runs a 9.99 @ 143mph in the quarter with his modified GLH and it has full interior and a street car not many 4 cylinder cars run that time and still a street able car "full interior and everything"

    You sorta lost me on that. I bought a lightly used GLH-T in the 80's.The previous owner then went a bought a GLHS Omni. I thought all the GLHS cars were T1 bottom end, T2 head-intake- FI, VV turbo, and IC. I threw a few mods at the GLH-T and the guy I bought it from (with the GLHS now) couldnt believe how it run. That guys GLHS really pulled with authority on the big end compared to my modded GLH-T. I could put the hurt on him till about 70, then hed reel me in and start marchin by 100.

    This video was uploaded in 2007 and likely made before that by a number of years. These cars are likely gone, outdated and no longer relevant on a performance competition factor. That said, they like will put a smile on your face much more so than most of the modern stuff unless you need sat-nav and don't know how to drive a stick.

    the super 60 package ! god damn I had a bunch of those and each one was a little better as I learned tricks and mods ...right around the first fast n furious was when I was into these little cars and smoking 5.0s and worked hondas was a breeze..sure they had thier problems but all were easily overcome with junkyard parts from other chrysler models from minivans to lebarons.. transmissions were weak in the glh so a later model cable shift version was the way to go there..axles from other models were common swap as well as computers from the higher end models. I wouldnt have been able to do it without the great resources on the web at turbododge.com .

    @PyroBlonde7777 I don't think making a clone of a car that the majority doesn't know or could give a shit less about would make anyone look like an ass, more of an enthusiast.. The only difference between a "REAL" Shelby and a clone is a few underhood "Shelby Automobile" emissions decals and a dash plaque that any trophy shop could whip up. If anything a "REAL Shelby" wouldn't be what I want to start with to modify because anything done to it would kill the collectors value

    What I'd do is get the Omni GLH, and since it doesn't have an engine you can make a nice hybrid. I'd go 2.5L block, forged internals, Turbo III 16V head, the turbo and the intercooler. Or you could swap in a Neon engine (2.0L SOHC, 2.0L DOHC, 2.4L DOHC, or 2.4L DOHC Turbo)
