Sheet Metalling up the Windows | Skoolie Conversion Ep. 4 | Adam & Steph

We took out all our windows and sheet metalled up the sides... are we insane?! Don't worry, we will add new rv windows soon! This is the first project where we see visual differences made to the bus and we are so excited!

    WOW you are so fortunate to have so many friends to help. I am doing a schoolie build by my self, which is possible with the right tools. its also great that ya'll are young. I am 63

    Age is just a number! We’ve done most of the build ourselves, this day was the only day we had more than one other person on deck! It was fantastic though 😁 happy building!

    Maybe working from the rear forward would allow an overlap of the skins that would keep water out as you go down the road in the rain.

    There's lots of impressive stuff about this vid, but the most impressive is doing it outside in the Canadian winter. How cold does sheet metal feel when it's already that cold out?? Strong work!! And even stronger work getting friends to come out and do it with you.

    When we did this it actually wasn’t that cold! Above plus 10 degrees Celsius! Still lots of snow on the ground because it takes so long for it to melt here in the north lol! The day we bought the sheet metal though, it was about -35 degrees Celsius… definitely hard to touch sheet metal in those temperatures!!!

    Hi guy's a couple things talking from experience if your not putting your sheet metal on the top under the drip rail you may have leaks because of the expansion and contraction of the bus in different weather scenarios also you should use a lap sealer between the new panels and the bus frame work your riveting to and if the rivets are not closed end rivets make sure they all get sealant shot into the center of the rivet if there is a way to get in water will find it. Clecos are a great way to take the panel back off after you drill your holes to clean up debris remove sharp edges also good to hold the panel when you add the sealant instead of it moving around. Your doing great follow your dreams.

    Hi Brian! Thanks for your comment! We put the sheet metal in a way that water can not get in. We put it under the drip rail and the rivets are sealed in the middle and completely closed off! We didn’t find the clecos necessary because when we put the sheet metal in, it was such a tight area between the drip rails and the structural beams that the new sheet metal held its self for us to drill the holes and put the rivet in right away! And don’t worry we caulked everything really well! :) We are making a “how to sheet metal” video soon so we will definitely take ur comment into consideration! Thank you!

    @@AdamandAtlas the problem with drilling the holes and putting in the rivets right away is that drilling thin sheetmetal produces burrs that don't allow the sheetmetal pieces to lay perfectly flat when the rivet gets installed, it doesn't look like a problem at first but after several hundreds of miles of travel the rivets might loosen up as the burrs get vibrated or squeezed flatter and you might get leaks or squeaks because of it. the reason for using clecos is to temporarily hold all of the drilled panels in place so you can remove them after drilling, then properly deburr all of the holes then install the panels again with sealant and clecos at first as you remove clecos and replace them with the permanent rivets. yes, it is more time consuming but the end results are much better.

    @@marzsit9833 it’s not in this video but it is going to be in one of our next video! We actually did deburr all of the drilled holes before putting in the rivets! The drip rail and the structural beams are so tight, that after shoving the metal up there, we secured two points with screws while we drilled out the rest of the holes, deburred them, and then installed the rivets! It worked for us!

    Did u do anything to the metal before installing? I thought it might need to be painted first to prevent rust

    I have one question. on the top where you only removed half the rivets. Does the metal not go up to cover the holes of the removed rivets?

  • @AdamandAtlas

    @AdamandAtlas

    The sheet metal goes up to cover those holes because we put new rivets in those holes that go through the new sheet metal. Our how to video shows this more clearly!

    The smooth rivets that came with the bus are called buck rivets. They are a pain in the butt, the pop rivets you used are great. The metal looks good, nice and clean. We are enjoying the videos, keep it up. Thanks from David and Tammy in Florida.
