Sheet Metal Hack- Filter Slot in Return Air Duct

Ойын-сауық

The focal point of todays video is to highlight how easy it is to make a filter slot in the return air duct that is simple to access. It's all about thinking about what is needed to make it easy for the home owner. Simply, an access slot and filter 'slide' is hand made during the layout of the return air fitting that is to be connected to the entering air end of a horizontal hanging air handler. #diy, #sheetmetalfabrication, #ductwork

Hot dang, if you have one similar to this you are lucky. So many are really botched up and get hung on screws or sharp edges of the metal.

Yay , a sheet metal video! On the commercial side I always replace those bug filters on those Mitsubishi pankake units with a 1" filter rack for a merv 8 filter. Easy change out. Thxs for the vids!

Heck yeah David. I do whatever is necessary to make it easy on myself. Then I know the customer will be satisfied too. That's a good tip on the Mitsubishi's.

The main thing is to make sure there's no sharp edges or screw tips that catch the filter. Good luck with your adaption Danny.

It seems to be always changing because there's always another machine or tool that comes to live here. I had to remove the second layout table to make room for the 9 x 42 Jet metal lathe. I still miss that table !!

I've had these for many many years. The new ones are kept in the tool box that goes with me to the job...and they are still 30+ years old. I got this set around 1977 and the cool thing is the cutting edges are replaceable. Thanks for watching.

I like that extension of the 1/2" double hem to keep the filter out of the furnace, kinda like an inside flange but the screws are outside the duct. I know you said you aren't worried about leakage but a little door to clip or slide on can be nice to prevent howling too.

  • @tractorman4461

Yes, a lot of times I make a flanged cover to slide into a pair of 'tracks' that are riveted to the sides of the slots. Then use the next size longer filter to make it stick out of the slot, but covered by the cover.

We were out where there was the poorest internet coverage I've ever seen Randall. I could occasionally pick up a signal for a brief moment, but couldn't watch anything at all. We are back in town now though.
