Sheep Special - America's Heartland: Episode 911

Reporter Sarah Gardner says that sheep have been a mainstay of agriculture for thousands of years. Used for food and fabric, sheep are an important agricultural commodity in many parts of the world. We head for Arizona's badlands on an unusual sheep drive. Meet an Idaho family raising award winning sheep. Sarah tests her wool wrangling abilities at a Tennessee sheep shearing school and we'll travel to Nevada where wooly white animals help prevent wildfires.

I remember as a young man feeding two young lambs with a bottle on the farm. They could both fairly polish off their bottles of milk and i really liked feeding them. Thank you for this video.

On the price of wool, part of what has made 'modern' agriculture unsustainable is the commodity market for the products. Many small-scale flock owners get much more a pound by focusing on fiber quality, specializing in particular types of wool, and selling directly to handspinners and fiber artists - OR by having their wool processed into roving, yarn, and/or finished goods to market themselves. This thinking outside of the industrial commodity box can yield a good income.

Yes but grass fed lamb meat costs $10.50 a pound on average so there's still a market for sheep. especially considering sheep are still considered lambs until they're over 12 months old. And at the 12-month Mark you can get about 100 pounds of meat and then butchering costs $100 on average. So that's a $950 profit from one lamb So on a commercial scale if you have 1,000 lambs each year to butcher. That's $950,000 each year before taxes, deductions, feeding expenses, and farm expenses.Which premium hay is about $300 a ton so a years worth of hay would be $300,000 if you include the breeding stock. Now with the current tax bracket taxes would be about $60,000. And depending on how frugal you are farm expenses would be about $90,000 to $190,000 at that size. So at the end of it all you'll have anywhere from $400,000 to $500,000 a year net income with 1,000 lambs butchered a year. And with good pasture you can have one sheep for every 200 sq ft of pasture. Which means on about 23 acres you can have 5,000 sheep so they're very good for smaller farms.

bodily protection? eh that may be true for the winters, but we don't sheer during the winter. and in texas we have to sheer before the summers hit or else we'll have sheep getting sick from heat. Think about wearing a wool coat in the middle of a 100 degree summer. yeah, wool's gotta come off.

9:59 - those poor sheep don't like having their necks held in place by those strap holders, do they? I know that it would be going too far to call it animal abuse, but I can't help but feel a small degree of empathy for the ba-a-a-a-a-s they cry out when they can't move their heads loose. We know that the sheep aren't actually being harmed here and that they are just being helped to look very clean and presentable. But, those poor sheep don't understand why they're being held in place like that, and they don't know that it's only going to be for a few minutes. Those poor animals
