Sheep sorting day at Green Pastures Farm. How many lambs were born this year?

Sheep sorting day at Green Pastures Farm. How many lambs were born this year? 212 lambs total were born to 105 ewes. That gave us 2.01 lambs per ewe on May pasture lambing with no assistance. No grain, minimal hay, just winter stockpiled grass and mineral. This is a new record for lambing success at Green Pastures Farm. For more grazing info check out my new book on our website: greenpasturesfarm.net/books/

Greg, you should think about investing a little time and energy into a setup that is actually designed for sheep. You could make that job a lot faster and easier with a proper handling setup. A few milled boards, some screws, a drill and a little know how and that job can be done in about 10 minutes with 2 people and almost no work. That said, the sheep look good. Good work.

@@gregjudyregenerativerancher But they won't learn to handle sheep effectively. I visit a lot of sheep operations in a year and one of the primary issues they have, is a terrible handling setup. Most of them are pretty similar to yours. This makes anything they do with the sheep miserable work. They won't scale the operation, at least in part, because of it. Once the sheep get sold, and they will be sold, said producer proceeds to tell everyone how awful sheep are to handle. I absolutely hate watching young people leave the sheep industry due to this unwillingness to improve. Consider that you get away with it because you only have 100 sheep and plenty of help. If a sheep setup is working properly it should be lightyears faster and easier than sorting cows. This is something to keep in mind for the development of your interns skill set and on top of that it will change how you interact with the sheep as well. Sorry for being an ass about this.

I’m in the Sierra mountains. It’s essentially high desert. You’d have to keep irrigation on, which is kinda taxing. I’m thinking of drilling a 2nd well. My ponds are seasonal. There’s anywhere from 1/8”-1/4” of evaporation a day. So by august they’re bone dry. I’m sure his methods would work. My place has been neglected for 21 years. I’m using pigs & chickens to work the soil. Get rid of the star thistle and other weeds. Using a soil builder compost to get some oxygen into the soil. Hi iron clay soils dry out as hard as concrete. I think his methods will work. Im trying to get there.
