Greg shares his tips for successful spring pasture lambing.

Greg shares his tips for successful spring pasture lambing. Lambing on green grass with warm weather is a good recipe for pasture lambing. Stay out of the paddock as much as possible while they are lambing. You are not helping them by being there. They have grass and the guard dogs, leave them alone!

@@gregjudyregenerativerancher Hey Greg! We had 2 ewes and 1 ram as we're really small and just starting out. Last week one of our ewes dropped 1 ewe lamb. Well, the other adult ewe doesn't seem pregnant(she's almost 1.5 years old now). I gave the ram access around December/January 2022-2023. What would you do with the one ewe who's not pregnant? If she doesn't lamb by fall, should I get rid of her? Would anyone buy a ewe who won't seemingly lamb?

She is probably pig fat, she would make excellent meat to feed your family. Don’t keep a ewe that does not give you lambs.

If sheep hoof lameness does not clear up due to wet weather I have used a rinse of copper sulfate then put on and in between the hoof a paste made of sugar and betadine, bandage it and put masking tape on the outer bandage to keep it dry. But most of the time moving to high dry ground usually helps clear it up.

That ewe with the dark pair of lambs: I bought some bean seeds this winter called Jacobs Cattle (and the beans really do look like miniature cattle) the origin is a very interesting story of Jacobs cattle, goats, and sheep.

Thanks for the video! Sheep and LGDs are match in heaven. I put my ram with my sheep December 2, and we have no lambs yet. I’m wondering if my ram is no good. Can he be to short to get the job done? He was smaller than the rest of the sheep. He’s starting to catch up some but if he doesn’t produce he won’t stick around very long. Everything looks pretty green there. It’s a little cold here but will be trending warmer. We did get a quarter inch of rain on Sunday. We need more though with all this wind we are getting.

I'm in the same boat. I have a feeling that my pasture is not up to snuff and they are missing some important nutrients altogether. I was hoping for May 5th lambing, but again it seems to be a no-show. I'm thinking that the ram will be shipped out in June or July either way.

Hey Greg, thanks for keeping these going so faithfully, I am jealous of how far along your grass is, but it is my own fault. If you have a second I have a question about your sheep. Do your dogs get into any lambs that don't make it? And what numbers do you use to calculate your lamb crop, i.e. surviving lambs divided by the ewes? I had a few triplets this year and I sent some half dead lambs to my sister, but they would have died, so I don't count them, is that how you would do that?

Greg, when did you & Jan decide to start adding the genetics from other breeds into the St. Croix flock? What breeds, and for what reasons? I have noticed that your cattle videos greatly outnumber your sheep videos. Is this because the sheep are so low maintenance? Also, how far away from the sheep were you filming from? Thanks

They started with a handful of different sheep breeds. However for a few years they have just been using Saint Croix Rams. I don't know if they have any non-Saint Croix blooded Ewes remaining. They are mostly half Saint Croix now.

Thanks for those responses, Mark. I couldn't recall if Greg has ever fully explained where he obtained the original seed stock for the South Poll cattle herd, and the St. Croix sheep flock. As I remember things, the genesis for the sheep flock came from another Missourian, an older man who was getting out of the sheep business? I can't remember from what point that Greg & Jan started with South Polls.
