Answers to some frequently asked questions: * I am the homeowner, not the builder, so I can't discuss the details of how this was done or do any similar projects. * The builder is High Tech Dormer in Massachusetts, USA, and you can find them at www.hightechdormer.com/ * Unfortunately I can't share details about the cost of the project. * If you are curious about how it was done, the builder's patent has details: patents.google.com/patent/US4676044A * Yes, this really happened, and so far there have been zero issues with the work.

When I bought my Cape Farmhouse, the upstairs had only 6' headroom, no bathroom and no dormers. I built a new second floor in the back yard, complete with floor system (for plumbing etc) with a shed dormer in back and "A" dormer in front and 9' ceilings. Then had the crane come, pull the old roof off (which was already cut free) and pick the new second floor on. He was gone by 10AM and I had a weather tight shell by the end of the day.

I hired a company in 1992 that did exactly this with air Jack system to lift the roof and heavy duty hinges placed at the peak. The house was a salt box style. With a long roof line. Added two rooms to our second floor. I wish I still had the videotape. It was taped by one of those big clunky Video Cassette Recorders from that era.

My neighbor had this done on his house maybe 10 years ago and it seems to be holding up OK. I wanted to do a dormer expansion on my (similar) house and found that I would have to replace the ridge beam to satisfy code, which makes me think my neighbors work may not have been permitted. IIRC, the engineering on this required a doubled 1 1/4 by 18" LVL beam, and it STILL wouldn't be strong enough to span the 38' from gable to gable, required a post about 1/3 of the way across which I was able to incorporate in a stair railing detail.

Just had a 24x24x9 garage built an they framed it in 1 day .. with 24 on center trusses .. I was wondering, why not just take the whole roof off and Frame the whole thing , basically the same way, add 6 to 8 windows .. if you check out Menards the whole garage kit siding Roofing OSB like 8-12k with trusses .. basically trying to turn a Bungalow into a colonial .. also have a basement with steel beam so thinking weight wise this idea could work ... I see alot of these dormers on houses by me , be a game changer to put all the bedrooms upstairs an open up the down stairs to a open concept ... lol 🍻 cheers this video was cool .

Hmm, a house I know well built in 1840 in central MA had what seems to be VERY similar to this happen to it sometime in the late 70’s. And the lack of a ridge beam being installed when this raised roof happens is a problem. The wall on the opposite side of the raised full dormer gets a lot of outward pressure instead of the load path going straight down, if it pushes on the original slope of the roof and out on the front wall, it’s structural bad news. It’ll take decades to kinda show (at least with 300 year old old growth original wood beams) but, yeah.
