This was the best series I've seen in a while. It was extraordinary. A very hard watch but just absolutely amazing.

This was a devastating watch. I haven’t seen anything else Whittaker is in but she was fantastic, as was the rest of the cast. Not an easy watch at all

I agree, yet it was worth doing so nonetheless.

I know Yael said she won't fly for work anymore. I don't know when this was filmed, but I know that it's way more cost-effective to produce in Australia. It seems that the story called for the setting in Australia too. I wish it was available here in the US on Paramount+.

I have to say, I quite enjoyed One Night. I went into it for Jodie Whittaker and being very excited as an Australian she was in the show (it's lovely to hear someone actually speaking positively about her Doctor and that era as someone who really liked it too- if you ever want to do a video on it I will be the first to watch!). I ended up binge watching the show in two days and really enjoying it and as a 26 year old I definitely wasn't the target audience. I do get some of your criticisms and have some of my own but I have to disagree with Tess being one note. I liked what a restrained character she was and that she held her cards close to her chest. The three main characters and the acting were, in my view, the best parts of the story. Especially the relationship between the three main women. I also didn't find the story to be too slow. I quite like a slowburn and when a show doesn't feel like it has constantly be pushing forward. I also have to say that while I wasn't totally satisfied at the end with relationship dramas being resolved, I found it a believable ending. I liked that they kept the realism (speaking from experience) but also still had a punishment of sorts and a catharsis. As far as why Jodie Whittaker is in it... So the writer was living in Australia for a long time and then moved to, I believe, Scotland. The character was written as an expat which either on purpose (or coincidentally) meant they could get away with casting someone from the UK and she would've had connections in that industry. I also imagine that made the project much more marketable and if Paramount was involved at that point they would've liked that for the show having an international appeal. Problem with Australian shows is that our industry is so insulated that it's so hard for our shows to get an international audience. Jodie Whittaker was sent a script (she was on maternity leave at the time) and she liked the script enough that she decided to do it. Learned an Australian accent for it, cut her maternity leave short, and her and her family moved to Australia for several months to shoot with a cast and crew she didn't know at all. And her accent was actually good! So cool honestly that an Australian project was her first out of Doctor Who!

Thanks, Shipper! I always appreciate your astute commentary, like your note at the end about the show providing the wrong catharsis. I'm burned out by the abused women and 'women in danger' shows that are so ubiquitous these days so I'll pass on this one.

You know, now that you mention the abused woman thing, that's also probably what made watching this so hard. I was having a lot of trouble articulating why I was struggling with the show.

I don't know why Jodie was sent the script; I do know that she was supposed to be on a maternity break and didn't want to even leave London for work, but got sent the script and fell in love with it to the point of travelling to the other side of the world. I can't comment on the show because ruddy Paramount haven't aired it in the UK! 🙄 But, whatever its like, OF COURSE I want to watch Jodie finally getting to play gay! I'm still annoyed that we didn't get to see the 13th Doctor even interact with her wife, let alone anything more!

I'm in another part of Europe and I found it somewhere online... it was a great watch, the script and the actors were brilliant, but it hit a little close to home. 🙃 I was so thrilled, to see her finally fully play a queer character. I really recommend not waiting for the official release 🙈✌

I had seen this video when it was posted but immediately stopped watching at the beginning because I wanted to avoid any spoilers prior to watching the show itself. Now that I have finished it, I came back to the video and comments. I liked the way the show was portraying the women (was most pleasantly surprised to recognize Nicole da Silva) and got creepy vibes from the perv guy (just like you said), so props to the actor from me as well... I somehow was waiting for an even bigger mystery to get uncovered because the actual one seemed too 'straight forward' to be just that after all. Thx a lot for yet another great recommendation that I most likely would have missed if it weren't for your channel.

Couldn’t make thru episode two. Felt heavy handed and way too negative. I am old and tired of the abuse of women as portrayed in film and tv.

Thanks for posting this! Hadn't heard of this show. Gave it a watch and came to finish your review. I really enjoyed and agree with your take. The acting is exceptional. The filmmaking seemed solid to me especially ways they blended the characters from the past and present into specific scenes and transitions. I found the story interesting in terms of themes yet also quite imbalanced. I was perplexed by how beautiful of a depiction of friendship this had combined with a rather unhappy depiction of marriage. There was a moment where despite knowing her wife's trauma and very little time passing since their move, Tess's wife assumed she was cheating and said something along the lines of, "Sometimes I wonder whether you love women at all or just hate men." Tess was very stoic and nonreactive. But I was like, "Woah! Is this supposed to be a loveless marriage?" Contrasted with the warmth and devastation of that lost relationship with Simone, I ended up feeling like there was a whole other (likely better) story left there untold. Kids tend to have intimate, intuitive awareness of their parents' trauma, repressed or not, and loads of empathy, so Tess's family bonds felt perplexingly weak. I suppose the show felt rather knowledgeable and had so many authentic moments between women and with processing trauma, but it still felt to me like it was framed as an outsider looking in who could not quite get the nuance and complexity, and as you said so well, compose a desirable catharsis into the story. I'd say everything in the plot from the buying and burning the business on felt strange to me.

Totally agree with you on Tess and her family. The whole do you just hate men I thought was just left dangling, it was a serious accusation too. I would have loved to see Tess and Simone explored in the present much more too, it would have felt more satisfying for sure. And agreed, the whole burning the business, while I get the sentiment of wanting to burn away the past, felt punitive and odd.

I actually find Tess's 'unresponsiveness' made her portrait even more realistic, as it demonstrated how profoundly such a traumatic event can change one's take on life. The brief talk with Lilly in the end captures the dilemma in quite a good way, between wanting to protect her from similar experiences and feelings yet feeling urged to set her free to make her own 'mistakes'. All in all, I liked that the series took the (right amount of) time to explore different angles but, of course, I consider your take on things valid, too.

@@jessican.7295 They did do a very good job with that theme in my opinion, as well. I had a lot of respect for Tess when she didn't get into it with her wife. I just did not know how to interpret the way their marriage was being depicted. I felt like it was probably just a little imbalanced the way it was written and threw me off. My favorite line between them was the dialogue where Tess responds to, "You need to let me in," with something like, "Trust me, you don't want to be in here."

As an Aussie, I was keen for this. All the right ingredients for a really good show ... but it was too slow, and the ending was unsatisfying. As you said, didn't quite hit the spot. I felt unmoved by it.

That’s what I thought 100% why are so many (woman) our shows about SA, I am tired of woman being victims of violence in shows. I was so frustrated another show on this topic. Then I also thought so many women go through SA and watched it. I thought he was going to push the daughter off the cliff at first. Agree with what you said about the pathos and the development of the couples relationship. I think I am also biased and why I watched cause always hungry for Oz content, esp with gay characters plus the wife (Kat Stewart) and the mother of the villain (Noni Hazelhurst) are also much loved Australian actors. Plus Jodie is brilliant . ❤ Thank you for this review.

I recognized Kat but didn't know what from, I'm not super up on Aussie actors. Watching Deadlock next which I hope will be more enjoyable! Agreed, tired of SA on women or just violence against women in general but it is a thing that happens so a bit conflicted about it.
