The holidays were certainly happy this year! Hanging out with family and friends is always a pleasure but I am also glad to get back to work. It was supremely strange to work on a Tuesday like this but I'm quite happy with how this turned out. Thanks for watching, we'll be back to normal next week.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from Reddit and my own email while giving advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

So the thing is, the DW are technically supposed to be the elite of each faction - Veteran SW aren’t “jump head first” - to me, this story screams of the worst players “I know the 40k through memes” and also bringing in the age old “that’s what my character would do” into the fray. DW is supposed to be more tactical than that. Then again majority of SW players I’ve met tend to verge on the meme-cringe side of the 40k spectrum.

Space wolf doctrine is still generally suited to being up close and personal, but it is not remotely reckless for the veterans, if anything it's cold and calculated. Like a wolf stalking it's prey before striking.

Story three is my friend!!! I was in that campaign, I’m Rogue! I was literally jumping up and down with excitement hearing all the feedback, she got played SO dirty and I ended up leaving the campaign not long after. Omg I’m so glad she wrote this, and even happier you covered it. It feels like validation. You got every nuance for why this was so upsetting, thank you. And LOVE the Owl House insert, because the plot of that episode was basically what happened to her. And yes, she’ll get to play her porcelain warforged again someday. She’s a bomb DM herself, as am I, so we’re going to make it happen. ETA: I didn’t count the first blurb as a story at first and wrote story two. Oops. Also my friend didn’t get the idea from Quibi, but that’s her story to tell. She had the best backstory ever, it is true.

I never understand guys who are convinced women fake enjoyment of a hobby for male attention. They’ll say stuff like “you don’t actually care about DND, you just want one of us to date you!” Okay. Imagine, hypothetically, I, a woman, was desperate enough for a boyfriend that I’m willing to fake an entire hobby just to get a guy’s attention. Why in the world would I be playing DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS of all things? I could fake interest in stuff like football or hockey. I’m sure everyone at the DND table are all real catches….

To be fair, some women actually do this. Heck, it's a common dating tip for both men and women to go to a place that specializes in hobbies with a lot of the opposite sex. Those women "like" DnD, but they aren't actually all that interested in it. I've heard horror stories of entire groups breaking up because a gal joined and manipulated all of the other guys to fight over her. Don't discount others experiences just because you yourself aren't guilty of it, or have never personally seen it.

As a lesbian myself, I can safely say that Sarah was wrong. I can understand wanting to "be yourself" in games and have your identity affirmed and all (hell, when I was still figuring out my gender, I played a girl character who had the name I currently use IRL), but she still shouldn't have tried to make something happen that the DM clearly said they were uncomfortable with. She could've easily just followed the DM's guidelines and given her character a wife, or talked with the DM to come to some other agreement that both of them are okay with. Not to mention that the rule obviously can't really be homophobic, since it affects all players identically. Basically, she should've either bit her tongue and accepted the DM's rule or recognized that this particular game wasn't for her and found a new one.

Hey so I'm the warforged bard from that story. Hi. Obviously I've watched that section several times. I'm a huge fan of the channel and I emailed the story. Thank you all so much for your kind words regarding the backstory. She truly is a fun character to play and for those wondering, I did find a game to play her in. The praise given really motivated me to look into a new game and I found a Curse of Strahd group that I really like so far. We start session 0 on Monday. I'm very excited. In regards to what inspired her, it actually wasn't any of the things folks have guessed at. I've never seen Tinman and my connection to the Wizard of Oz fandom is nonexistent. It wasn't the Quibi short either though I'll have to look into it. It wasn't Orianna either though I could have saved myself a lot of time finding character references if I'd thought to look into her, lol. She obviously wasn't created in a vacuum. These aren't new ideas. Just a remix of a lot of tropes that I enjoy. The direct inspiration for this character actually came from a song called "The Doctor's Wife" by the Clockwork Quartet that I actually found here on KZread back from when there were a lot of Steampunk bands popping up. It's a great song. The idea to make her a performer came from a different horror story Crispy covered on this channel like 2 years ago. One about a monk who was a performer dealing with an edgelord that was scoffing at her roleplaying and saving another player from becoming a murderhobo. In fact in the original game I made this character for, she was a monk because we already had someone wanting to play a bard and I didn't want to step on her toes. The flexibility of the background was done on purpose. In my early days of playing, I often had DMs who were just given nothing to work with so I decided to start helping out by coming up with backstories the DM can draw on if they want to. Only in recent years have my DMs really started drawing on that and I'm really happy with the current state of at least the players of the game. I come up with characters easily and I like to give the DM as little work as possible to incorporate what I'm wanting to do. And generally when I trust the DM, they get a lot of leeway with me. So if they tell me no, it's no. That's fine. But that trust is really important to me. I actually have a lot of ideas for arcs and themes for her that are dependent on the game she's being played in including personal development and what ever became of her husband. But that'll only come up if I'm asked. I like to give the DM room to figure out their own thing. The Rogue really is a great person. The two people in the comments to claim to know me actually do. That actually was Rogue in the comments. I didn't tell them that I was posting this. I just did so on a whim after listening to the videos in the background for a few hours. Once all of this went down, I scooped up Rogue and ran from that server. I then brought them to another server I'm on where I like to collect people I like to play games with XD. They even joined in a Final Fantasy X themed game I started running but I get waaaaay up in my head when I'm running. It's a problem. They say I'm a great DM but I have commitment issues which I think negates that. I prefer to assist the DM from the other side of the table than to DM myself. D&D is a game about collaboration and for me that includes with the DM. Again, trust is really important to me. I would absolutely trust Rogue as a DM though. You guys have been amazing though. I've been walking on clouds since hearing Crispy read this and your comments are really encouraging to me. Thank you all for that. I'll update you all some day on how that story goes.

Much respect to the rogue for siding with the bard. For those curious about the 40k names: Dark Angels are basically Batman at his most untrusting and emo, Alpha Legion are kinda like the setting's version of HYDRA (including painting hydras on their armour when fighting in the open) and do a load of stealth/infiltration stuff so the player was clearly going for a "gotcha!" moment and Spacewloves are Viking werewolves IN SPACE!

In regards to the last story, I'm not ace, but my very first dnd character was, because I didn't know these people well and wasn't comfortable role-playing romance with them yet. I'm a writer, and I have a character who I realized I'd unintentionally written as asexual and demiromantic well before I'd ever heard those terms, much less realized I am the latter, so I just made her as a dnd character, a halfling rogue. His position as first captain and basically right hand of Logar, his Primarch, lead to him Corrupting Logar to chaos. Logar and Erebus organized a plan to corrupt Horus, the Emperor's favored son, and kick off the Horus Heresy. Everything bad happening to the Imperium vs Chaos, it's all Erebus's fault. Which he was then felled in 1 on 1 combat by Kharn the Betrayer, in an act of vengeance for his shenanigans in the Horus Heresy.

When I was dming for evil characters i honestly could not be their fan and instead only hope that they die in misery or/and disband the game completly. That backstory for Warforge is great. For the people who don't speak Warhammer: Space Wolves are vikings. They're all "Thrill of battle" types. Dark Angels are knight templars. Half of them went evil, and the other half re trying to atone for them. Alpha Legion re spies who may or may not be working for the bad guys. The meme for them is that they all look like their boss so any one of them could be him. They also don't usually announce they're Alpha Legion, but instead infiltrate other space marine chapters. The chapters usually stick with their own, but Dark Heresy allows them to play together because the marines are pat of the Death Watch, elites conscripted from each chapter (even some of the evil ones, because some marines from them stayed good instead and joined the Death Watch.) They don't usually do mass combat, but rather do squad based assaults on high value targets. And before someone says it: Yes, "Good" is a relative term in Warhammer, and everyone is is just a different shade of bastard. Shut up, Steve.

There can't be any satisfaction in that. It reminds me of a game I was in where another player for some reason made it part of their character's interests to solve my character's back story secrets *for* him. And it is one of the few times I've been actively upset with another player. Thankfully the dm wasn't having it and would just give her other stuff to do instead of exposing all of my characters secrets before it was narratively appropriate.

I remember you saying you disliked pre-written modules and only ran homebrew. Back then, you also showed unfamiliarity with iconic Forgotten Realms characters... which made me really sad. There are many different chapters (chapters are like divisions) of space marines who all have different tactics, quirks and personalities, the Space Wolves are impulsive and belligerent and the Dark Angels are paranoid and conniving. They all have clashing personalities that would not do well together with others in their own chapter let alone with other chapters, the verbal infighting is part of the fun of the edgy grimdark aesthetic.

I’ll never understand altering someone’s backstory like that. Especially when it sounded pretty coherent and well put together. It’s one thing if there is gaping holes in it that needs some filling in, or even some areas that feel out of touch with the setting, but yeah, this didn’t sound like that. And cosmetic changes of the characters is not something to mess with. If anything, it sounds like it would be a cooler cosmetic choice than whatever the dm was trying to push. I’m glad the player ended up with a good friend out of it. Sad they may have felt they had to compromise so much to make their character work for this dm. And honestly? 3 hours, especially when most sessions are around 4 hours, is WAY too long to take to introduce a new player. The longest I waited was an hour and half but the players and dm checked in with me on it and I confirmed it was ok as the encounters before set up a large portion of the setting and were plot relevant three sessions later (they foreshadowed a major antagonist). Also this was an rp heavy campaign and sometimes you make sacrifices to have scenes play out organically. I was ok with this and suitably entertained and the group has been amazing and inclusive. But still, that was only acceptable because I was checked in with and gave the ok that I was comfortable with the wait. Also it never went past the halfway mark of the session and I was absolutely thrilled with the organic transition where my character was actually introduced. It made more sense for them and set their character tone much better than had I been introduced earlier. Three hours though? Especially for filler encounters that were irrelevant to anything the players were doing or the story at large? Yeah, not acceptable. The dm from the story is not respecting their new player by doing that, especially since the rest of the party seems to really want to include said player.

The Alpha Legion is actually a unit of Space Marine Traitors who have a reputation for being sneaky motherfuckers. And the Space Wolves are more like Space Vikings with a rediculously strong wolf motif(their Primarch actually being raised by twenty-foot-long wolves. And he has a tank named after him). As the Rogue who threw it overboard, the NPC was this all powerful demigod in a bag who wanted to be returned to its body. I was like cool, but you sound sus, can you promise not to hurt my friends? The DM wouldn’t give a straight answer and kept saying “I can’t promise you that,” and wanted to pontificate at length about its backstory when we’d already been on the ship three hours and we had a new player waiting. So I was like, “if you can’t say yes, sorry. You’re going back in the sea.” DM was the picture of surprised pikachu face. I think OP described it perfectly while trying to be brief, and I’m an English teacher.

@BiggerinRealLife Laughing at the "If we want to get English Teacher Analytical" into "I'm the guy, and I'm an English Teacher." combo here. That situation is exactly what I was picturing, and not one that "He Rufused" implies. "He wouldn't promise not to harm" has ambiguity whether he's planning on harming you, "He refused to promise not to harm" implies he's planning on harming you. Additionally, it isn't even a double negative "He Wouldn't promise not to harm us." doesn't have the same meaning as "He Promised to Harm Us."

For the warforged character idea, You can do porcelain and make it hard as steel because the original artificer used alchemy to harden the porcelain to a steel like hardness and durability. But for that gm? always bring in the new character as soon as possible(as well listen to the players backstories, and try to make it fit in.) The character could be on a buoy after trying to escape the castle, being made of metal, wood, leather, and porcelain would sink to the bottom and would sink and get caught in the murk at the bottom if she did not hold onto it.

And working on the next stage of humanoid evolution. An automaton capable of housing a soul from. A living person. Would basically in function be like an Exo from Destiny. Currently he had been using the automaton and a companion and friend for his daughter. Well the calamity happens and he gets gravely injured. The automaton empties his soul container and let's my character in. Now an automaton, he and his daughter escape Aeor and find themselves in what is now Tal Dorei. Until one night while their camping he just deactivates. And he's to heavy for his daughter to carry so she has to leave him behind. Only deactivating centuries later when the Mighty Nein did their fuckery in the ruins of Aeor near the end of C2.

My first game was Mutants and Masterminds. Got to the table prepared to play a Punisher-like gunslinger character. The group I was joining already had one of those and he made it clear that I would be cramping his style. I was coerced into building a sniper instead, so I went in that direction. I met up with the team and was introduced as their new team member. The following short RP section was that I wasn't welcome into their close-knit team dynamic. I played off of that pretty well, because I was secretly playing an ex-villain that they didn't recognize. We went on a mission to draw out a drug lord, and was more or less told to stay away from their group (under penalty of the super-strength guy ripping me in two), so I provided cover from afar, using gadgets to roof climb and maintain watch over them. The team immediately arrived at a warehouse, convinced the guards that they were hired muscle, and went in to meet with the boss for a job opportunity. I was ordered to stay on the rooftops and provide cover (for a team I couldn't see) because it would be weird for me to drop in and join them. They spent the rest of the 6 hour session in that warehouse, talking with a drug kingpin and convincing him that our weird plant guy could grow the BEST KUSH he'd ever seen over the next 3 weeks, then we'd catch him in a major drug sting operation (even though the hero team would be actively producing and selling drugs to him, which is entrapment at best, but nobody wanted to hear that). TL;DR, I joined a game, had my character changed to a different role last minute, got RP alienated immediately, got ditched by the party in-game, spent 5 hours watching them play their game, and had my inputs for the future ignored because I wasn't involved. The setting was cool and the prospect of playing was enticing, but my first TTRPG experience was pretty sour overall.

Or alternatively they just aren't confident trying to do such (some people just aren't good at writing/improvising certain genres). Respect the DM's boundaries. If the different in preference is enough of a deal breaker then maybe find a different game to join but don't try to force subject matter on the DM/players that it has already been made clear they aren't open to or comfortable with in the game.
