I vaguely know the story of Waitress, but I know the song is talking about the suddenly pregnancy. But even so, it reminds me of not only my struggle, but my friends struggles, with depression. It takes the life out of you, and the person you were before is gone. "And then she'll get stuck and be scared of the life that's inside her...getting stronger each day, as it finally reminds her to fight just a little. To bring back the fire in her eyes. That's been gone, but used to be mine." That struggle of overcoming and getting back to a place where you are okay again is exactly like that. Just wanted to throw that out there.

This is after Earl found the money she was hiding to leave him. It’s an intense scene that finally breaks her down to feel that she’s trapped with no way out and baby that’s going to grow up like she did. It’s more implied than in the film that a cycle of abuse circled Jenna and her mother.

reyna michaelis I’ll try make this short, but it probably won’t be. Sorry! Pretty much, Jenna is a waitress with a talent for baking pies, who is pregnant with her abusive husband’s child. He claims all of her hard-earned money and tells her if she needs anything, he’ll buy it if he approves. Before this particular scene her husband finds money she was hiding around the house to get to a pie-baking contest. The prize was a large amount of money, which she’d use to break free from him and start a new life. Afraid of his response, Jenna tells her husband it was meant to be a surprise, to buy things for their baby, who she feels mostly resentful for. In this song, she realizes how much she’s changed and how hopeless she feels now that her plan is ruined. The girl Jenna refers to in the song is her younger self, who was damaged but never gave up.

As someone with depression, I can say I love this song and love to listen to it. I know the context of the song but some of the lyrics hit me differently. Like whenever I listen to this song I just think someone with depression is just singing to them happier selves and know they’re just getting stronger everyday they wake up even though they don’t feel strong.

This song makes me cry. Listening to this, remembering my past, thinking to myself, "Yeah, you're right." Wonderfully done.

Putting aside the fact that her voice and the emotion she puts into her singing is breathtaking, truly, this is a beautiful song. I keep listening to it, and I keep checking to see if I can like it but I already have. It's just so perfect.

Whenever I hear this song I start to cry because my grandma died when I was 6 and I haven't been the same since. This songs reminds me so much of that and your cover of it is so emotionally powerful. You did an amazing job on this cover Anna. Keep doing what your doing! 🥰🥰

This song reminds me so much of my best friend who was practically my sister. I didn’t know a life without her until 3 years ago when cancer took her life. I miss her so much but knowing that Anna covered this song and made it so beautiful is helping me so much with coping with her death. So thank you Anna, so much.

I know no one will probably see this or respond anyway but I really wish that someone would make THIS version on an hour loop cause I don’t know how but I MUCH prefer this time she sings it cause it’s deeper voice and it’s soothing and I wish this was at least on Apple Music. I know the other one you sing is but this one is personaly the best sounding and I would love to listen to it on loop instead of having to rewind a hundred times. Your really great! 🎶

okokok can we all just sit down and think. she added a tiny pause at the end of the song, let's talk about this itty bitty light of my life, she added this pause ( i presume) so that the piano can wow us with that music, and wow, they are great, but still, there is a tiny pause AFTER that, and that's why i"m typing a paragraph about a pause at the end of a video. that pause, just lets you sit there, realize how much you love her vocals, and the song itself, and the message and dadadada this is amazing, but it also gives you enough time to get back to the tab that is playing music and repeat the song but isn't soo long that you get annoyed if you don't want to listen to it again. Before I start rambling on, Anna, thank you so much for covering this song. Even if it wasn't for me, the heart you pour into your covers shows so much emotion behind it that there's no doubt in my mind you could be a professional singer if you tried, but we're happy to have you here on KZread. As for why I'm so happy you covered this, when I sing this song I'm immediately reminded of a close friend of mine, Taryn, who I've been trying to make happy for about ten years now. She and I were inseperable nine years ago, when we would tell each other literally everything about our lives. Our dreams, our passions. We would cry on each other's shoulders when we were hurt and cheer for each other in whatever we did. We first met in a group of friends called the "Guardanian Wolf Pack" before she was forcefully removed by my life by someone who's name I to this day do not know, but we call him Fox Face. Despite my warnings, she got into a relationship with this person and to keep her, he proceeded to tear apart the friendships I had come to enjoy, turning every single person in our group against one another to ensure he would not have any competition. He forcefully separated me and Taryn, and she ended up marrying him for all of a year while he forced her to break her lines of contact with me. They were together for a good year to my knowledge before they broke up and she moved away, and a few years later she managed to get back in contact with me. However, she was changed quite a bit by him, and is no longer nearly as close a friend with me as she used to be. Though she now has a rather large group of friends and a fiance', I cannot help but wish for the days when she and and I were best friends, when I wished I could stomach the courage to ask her out and try my damndest to make her happy. This song reminds me of the girl I fell in love with, even if she's gone from my life now. It reminds me of the friend I had before she was torn from my life, and no matter what I do or say, I'll never be able to change her mind on the man she is with now. I hope by listening to this song, specifically your cover of it and many others, that I will finally be able to have closure and move on. Thank you so much, Anna! Never stop singing, and I hope one day I can sing a duet with you!

stoneheart as i read ur comment it reminded me of my mom. When she was with my dad he would physically and mentally hurt her and she was forced into the marriage by her parents and since she left him she developed depression and her parents hate her. She now has a new husband but i will never forget those times whne she told me about teh past with my father with tears down her face. Ever since her relationship with my dad she has never been the same. He made her cut all contact with all of her friends and wanted her all to himself. He was abusive and was a drugatic and alcoholic. I’m glad she left him but sometimes i wonder taht if she didn’t would my life be better.

I still love this one, but god ya redo shows your growth. Hot damn you go girl!

I heard Sara Bareilles sing this, and I swore I knew that Anna sung this and it was for Waitress. Luckily this song was in the list of recommended videos from that video, and the lyrics are the hecking SAME. It's crazy hearing them both sing the same song tbh, but I love it nonetheless. Edit: After this comment I found out Sara was the one who wrote this song for Waitress. I did not know this and I am content I gained this new knowledge. That is all.
