Anyone else not surprised that shark typhoon has its own column in the deck build?

If it says you can cast something without paying it's mana cost, that means you can't pay "X" because that is assigned when you are paying the mana cost. Hopefully that makes sense.

Yeah, the reason it's super simple is that you simply can never pay a manacost X if you don't actively pay mana for the spell.

35:00 still surprised this trips you up. Best way I remember it is if anything let's you cast something with "X" in its cost "without paying it's mana cost" then you can't pay that X. Ever. Even if that condition is capped by something (like Narsets power) it still holds true. I could be wrong. I'm not a judge lol.

Nah, you've got it. The one weird case to consider is where you have an X (or anything else) as an additional cost like Kicker, which you can pay. But for mana costs you're right.

I have been looking forward to building this Narset since the second she was teased. My build is pretty similar, just the best permanent token generators, Narset protection, and some high powered bombs. Loved the "Oh I can play Liliana" moment when you realised planeswalkers were free game for Narset haha

Yeah, I'm considering some kind of a pump+haste strategy to just cheat out massive Walkers. Definitely not very good, but definitely fun.

explosive decks are so much fun to watch. They're also the most puzzling to work through

For my Narset, Enlightened Exile EDH deck I built her as a Combat Focused Spellslinger. I use an array of flexible Instants and Sorceries that perform a variety of potent Combat Tricks to pump her up, protect her, make her more evasive, and control the Battlefield.

Love this. She was my first General from Aftermath as well. I too built mine nearly identical to this one. So cool!

The value of X in an X spell is defined by how much mana you spend. Casting a spell without paying its mana cost means you can't spend anything. Ergo, X is always 0. Sorry, CGB, them's the breaks.

So does that mean that something like a Haughty Djinn would let you cast for x=1 (because of the cost reduction)

@@piercearora7681 No, because you're never paying the cost that got reduced. (Mind you, if, say, Thalia's out, then Djinn could help you there. Surcharges are added before discounts.)

@@FanOfMostEverything ​ @Alpaca Pierce Actually, you define the value of X when declaring that you will cast a spell (if you're paying its mana cost), then you pay for it, which means that discounts can reduce the cost of X since it's (almost always) a colorless cost. CGB even has multiple videos taking advantage of that with Djinn or Mindsplice Apparatus.

@@piercearora7681 The rule is actually that if you cast a spell without paying its mana cost, if there's an X in its cost, you must choose 0 for X. Casting the spell normally lets you choose the value, but casting it with any effect that skips the mana cost locks it at 0, regardless of any other modifiers or additional costs.

See, I knew about that X rule from memory. The one rule that still trips me up is the exact opposite. When a card says "without paying its mana cost", ALL the other cards that say "cost X more to cast" somehow mess with my head. I wasn't supposed to pay. Your card says my card costs 1 more, and my other card says I don't have to pay. I instinctively think that "I don't have to pay" means "I don't have to pay no matter what Thalia says the card costs now". Nope.

Awesome build. I definitely went more of a token build mixed with protection spells and a few things that give haste but did steal a few things CGB had. Also found cards like unexpected windfall to be amazing in my version of the deck.

Is this the kind of deck you would build for Narset in Commander? I have a foil etched Narset and have been looking for a Jeskai commander for a while so I am wondering how people would build her.

Nah that's honestly pretty fair. Parter can be okay for some scenarios to leave in play if it's hating someone else more than you but that's about the most friendly one and it's still terrifying.

I'm shocked you do not have the cosmetic for Command Tower yet seeing as how much you enjoy HB these days. It was one of the first cosmetics I got when I got into HB as it goes into every deck that isn't mono color.

This card is very reminiscent of the old Narset enlightened master, just a bit more balanced

Narset is a frustrating one for Arena because it doesn't have that full history of Magic to pull from, I was shocked by how few one mana cantrips there were, even good two mana ones are scarce. My whole strategy was to rattle off a few cantrips every turn to make her big and cast some decent stuff from the graveyard, not even big stuff, there aren't many spells that we can't catch even without any prowess triggers. It can work, if things line up we can just finish them in a couple swings, but it's a lot harder than it would be in paper. Some commanders don't really suffer too much from the more limited card pool, but I feel like Narset as built on Arena and Narset as built in paper is not just on a whole other level but in a totally different solar system. It's not a flub, don't get me wrong, but in paper this thing could be pretty degenerate.

Well you also have the problem that commander is against 4 players while this is just a 1v1. You don't wanna flood your deck with a whole bunch of cantrips that don't really do any thing. Even in normal commander you don't wanna do that. So sure, paper she'd have some more cantrips to go off with, but you still wouldn't run that many of them.

Narset cantrips will only be good on brawl im building a paper version all cards bought minus basic lands and some commons uncommons from commander legends. Deck will be just shy of $900 bucks paper

No lie, I was excited for this. I built the deck but I'm 0-11 idk if I'm not understanding the flow but I can't get this deck to pop off.

I feel the pain on the heliods intervention whiff. Happens the the best of us man, you're still one of the best players to watch, don't sweat it bro!

Alternative strategy: cloning the commander with Vesuvan duplimancy, Vile duplication spark double, helm of the host... Fun times!

54:23 Discontinuity would have been *really* good there... (I know it was in the graveyard, but it's probably the only solution at that point)

That decks looks like maximum fun without being so weak it's unplayable.

Playing a spell means paying a cost. Playing it without paying it's cost is an alternative cost. A spell may be paid for only once. The alternative cost is zero ergo all x cost spells cast without paying mana cost are zero as the cost paid is zero.
