This is sooooo true. I only went to 8th grade. I had my daughter at 15. I got a GED book from a Library studied it and took my GED at 19. Took CC classes and got into a LVN vocational school and passed with A’s. I passed my state boards here in California and started working as a nurse. I make $504.00 per 12 hour shifts. I work three 12’s per week I make $6,000 per month and am debt free! My dad was an alcoholic and my mom was institutionalized with paranoid schizophrenia my whole life. I grew up in motels near skid row in Fresno, California. If you want to learn and succeed you can do it!! I am 52 now my daughter owns her own bakery and is very successful. My other daughter is a teacher and my son is an engineer in the armed services. If you find what your children love they will succeed and love their lives and vocation.

I was a foster kid who ended up homeless as a child with no one willing to help me. The school kicked me out because they didn't want the reputation of a kid who sleeps on the streets attending their school. They told me that in the state that I was in, I'd never be anything anyways. I've been wanting to go back to school but not sure how. This actually gives a lot of hope to someone like me.

This was an amazing and informative interview! Especially how she was treated before and after she became an adult. I hate all the guilt that was put on her before 18. I can relate to not being brain ready for academics. Things didn’t click for me until my mid 20’s! But because of the school society, I had lost all confidence in myself.

Make no sense at all. But I can say, I can tell you lost confidence in yourself by laying out details. And about your teenagers years. I can also state that I could tell that you were a house roach. Never socializing with any one/body. Alll day you eat and sit around like a ice peach potatoes. I just feel like it’s a mind thing. And you were too weak to fight it. You all always make excuses. Either it was I was bullied my whole life or I didn’t fit in type of BS. REMEMBER ITS CHOICE

We chose to unschool half way through ninth grade. I'm very happy with my daughters knowledge. I do have an internal fight between my thoughts on traditional schooling and unschooling. This video really reassures me that my daughter is on a great path. I needed this today. Thanks.

As a “high school dropout” who went to community college, then took my GED and transferred to a state school and got a BA, so much of what Brigid said resonated with me. I felt the stigma of dropping out as a teen bc school wasn’t working for me. I am sure that my parents were judged at times for not being able to get me to go to school, but they supported me. And really what we were sort of doing was unschooling and we just didn’t know the name! Thanks for sharing this interview.

@@Nico5890 Take a look in the mirror before falsely and ignorantly saying something is absurd. This woman and other people are living proof that yes, you CAN get into college with neither a subpar GED or diploma. Moreover, you can get jobs without having finished high school, gotten a GED, go to a university, or even a trade school. You know how I know that? I'm also living proof. I had none of that and I got three jobs just based on ye olde hard work, patience, diligence, and some help from God. :)

Yep this has ALWAYS been the case. I've never ever understood why someone would go straight to a four year when CC offers the exact same classes and you save so much frigging money! Why would you pay that kind of money for undergrad classes? Just go to CC and take every possible class you can for your major there then its super easy to get into the college you want as a transfer student as you've already proved you can do the work. Every single homeschooler/unschooler has this option so all the "how will they go to college" is utter BS

@bachirbouihat6590 when I was a teenager, I went to my local community college and took the basic requirements (Math, English, public speaking, etc.) Then I transferred into a four year school and got an associate's and bachelor's. When I applied for graduate school, they never asked about highschool, they just wanted my undergraduate transcripts.

She does have a high school equivalency, she just went the other route without taking the GED or HiSET test. The Accuplacer test she scored high on that’s how come, that test shows colleges that she is college ready. If she would have scored low she would have to take the actual TABE test. Community Colleges offers those tests, most of them at least.
