So glad y'all finally checked out this song -- one of my favorites from my '70s childhood! Fun fact: Lead singer wrote this song about one night traveling with the band and looking for the old, iconic Holiday Inn sign!

Another terrific band that played during the same time was "Atlanta Rhythm Section." From their name, you might think them a Southern Rock band, but their music was a lot closer to that of Steely Dan of The Doobie Bros, rather than The Marshall Tucker Band. Some of their hits include "I'm Not Gonna Let it Bother Me Tonight," “So Into You,” “Spooky,” and “Imaginary Lover," but I was always a fan of their song "Champagne Jam."

I was a junior in HS when this song was out. My friends and I loved it! But imagine having this great groove then having Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Gordon Lightfoot, Crosby, Nash and Young - just to name a few of the hundreds of artists playing on the radio into your teenage brain!! I really love that classic 70s music. I don't think I appreciated it that much back as much as I do now in my 60s. Great reaction from you both! ❤❤

They started in 1967 as the Climax Chicago Blues Band (from Engkand, not Chicago, just Chicago style blues), droppingbthe Chicago in 1972. They still exist though 3 of the 6 founders have passed away. None of the members on this song are in the current line up. This song was from 1976.

Climax Blues Band are from my home town of Stafford in the UK and I knew the lead singer/sax player Colin Cooper (R.I.P.) well. Great to see that you've reviewed this song, it was their big hit in the UK. They were essentially a blues band and played lots in the The States in their heyday. Actually they were probably better known in The States than they were in the UK, even though they were a British band.

  • @CCDzine

It's cowbell for sure but the player nay have softened it with a bit of fabric inside or, more likely, held it with a couple fingers pressed on the side to numb the ringing sound.

, Derek Holt explained that the song was "just a lucky moment in time", and that it is about being on the road in America. The chorus "kept on looking for a sign in the middle of the night" referred to searches for Holiday Inn signs, the sight of which meant that beds had been found for the night. When the band's career first started in America, they used to fly everywhere, in some cases involving up to three flights just to get to one place. Their itineraries meant that getting to any one place was difficult and involved arriving in a town, getting into a car, getting to the gig just in time to perform the sound check, performing the gig, re-entering the car and then looking for a bed in the middle of the night...Pete Haycock sang the song and he wasn't the lead singer but the Sax player on this song and died in 2013 of a heart attack he was 63

Wow. I remember this song from the radio when I was young. Never knew who sang it so I had no idea what to expect when I clicked on this video.

Saw them play this in 1975, at an outdoor concert in Germany along with Ike and Tina Turner and Mahavishnu Orchestra.

This is the first time I have listened to the studio version of this song in a long, long time...as in decades! I've watched the live version lots of times here on KZread. One thing I noticed listening this tonight was that the bass player is REALLY working that instrument during the chorus! Thanks for posting and bringing back some good memories. Yes, I was a teenager growing up in the 70's.
