Shazam: Origin
Фильм және анимация
Fan editor Billy Batson's feature length cut of ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL (1941), with Tom Tyler and Frank Coghlan Jr.
Note: The serial that this film is taken from is reported by Internet sources to be in the public domain. For a copy of the full serial, with informative commentary, I'd recommend the recent Kino Lorber blu-ray: www.amazon.com/Adventures-Cap...

I love how this is supposed to take place in Siam (present day Thailand), and later the location is near Khandapur in India, but the attributes of Captain Marvel are described as those of Greek gods and demigods (10:05). It's like the writers just figured, "Eh, it's not North America, and it's not western Europe. So it's all the same." It's also adorable how the script of that ancient language at 10:06 is actually stylized English letters. 🤣
I remember seeing this at least 50 or 60 years ago. I'm 80 now....remembering Whitey as one of the the Dead End Kids in the 40's with Slip and Satch. For that era these were great special effects.
I love Billy's "Golly, gee-whiz" voice and intonation.
The one, true, real Captain Marvel is one of the coolest superheroes ever.

@@cambridge286 Actually, Superman originally did not fly, but could leap an eighth of a mile. When the Fleisher brothers were commissioned to produce the Superman cartoons, they found the constant leaping would be too labor intensive to animate. So they asked if they could show Superman flying instead to expedite the illustrations. DC comics agreed, and thus Superman gained the power of flight ever after.

Was it better because it was in black and white, or was it just better? I feel like it was just better.
In my head cannon this Shazam/Captain Marvel is Mentor from the 70s TV show. And I think he passed the torch on to a younger man.
I remember going to my local cinema every Saturday morning, Shazam was one of the main stories featured in weekly episodes.
Billy was at the correct age to help the story along. A sort of Jimmy Olsen who can be there but not necessarily take part. Very well done serial. Far better than today.
the only Shazam I saw was the cheesy Saturday Morning show in the 70's but this is fantastic! I love old classic film noir action sci fi movies and this is awesome! very good special effects. great story! I found another one before and I watch it all the time. a must see!
I feel like a kid again, watching this. Thanks for this.
Why does this look better than that 70's version I grew up with?
Tom Tyler was fantastic as Captain Marvel in these cliffhangers. Also check out him starring in the serial "The Phantom"
Great production values. So nice to see these well produced episodes again.
Billy Batson IS Captain Marvel. This serial has been released on blu-ray and it is excellent. Over 80 years old and this version far exceeds the crap Marvel put out.
My God Billy must have been slap jacked 10 times in this movie. I guess each time Billy transforms into Captain Marvel the concussions magically go away.
some of those flying scenes are better than the CW ones.
I love Shazam since I was an 80s kid👍🏻 ⚡ great character. I'm about to see the movie.
This is better than that Stupid Movie with Zachary Levi.
Great work! A true treat to watch!!!! :)
John Davidson (Tal Chotali) steals every scene he is in. The special effects are fantastic for 1941. They changed the origin from the comic book, in which Billy Batson was an orphan who earned money selling newspapers and encountered SHAZAM in the subway.
1:37:28 -- Wow, she sure gets knocked unconscious easily. He pushes her, she bumps into the wall, and she's out like a light.

muy bueno! esta mejor que la pelicula actual!
The acting and production budget is top notch compared to some of the shit I see in 2023
GREAT quality. Thank you!
I first saw this at the 'Wycliffe' cinema, Moss Side, Manchester (UK, of course). They also showed 'King of the Rocket Men' and the very early 'Batman' serials at the Saturday Matinée. I think it cost 3d in the currency of the time. Somewhere around 5¢.
Doctor Bentley! "Nice read, Velma." I was surprised, I thought it would turn out to be Betty.
Some of the effects are truly impressive for the time! And Billy Batson is a '40s era podcaster? =^[.]^=
The stuntmen sure earned their money
The live-action Filmation series, in COLOR, no less, which starred Michael Gray alongside Jackson Bostwick, and later alongside John Davey, with Les Tremayne as "Mentor," remained the best interpretation of what had by then become DC Comics characters, for my money.
Awesome! Thank you. Many happy memories.
Dr Scorpion properly is the most under power villain but yet he is somewhere scary because he could be anyone of us and smart. I watch this movie all the way to the end thx to him ;)
Awesome!! Thank you !!! Republic pictures!!
3-23-23 my lan lord was A FAN OF CAPTAIN Marvel, I had bought A reprint of the first captain marvel comic book,my landlord was Fan of captain marvel, my landlord had died A few years ago, I had laid the comic book on my former landlord’s front porch stairs so his spirit & the pets he had buried on his property spirits.
The only problem I see is that some one bright idea turned a good movie into a comedy which was never meant to be even by todays standard.
Muchas gracias por esta magnifica pelicula del verdadero Capitan Marvel Shazam, me hizo recordar mi linda niñez,que Dios los bendiga, atte Santiago Torrez V.
My only problem with this is the bolt on his shirt. Why does it look like that? Otherwise, the whole thing is amazing even the flying.
It's much more fun to watch with the cliff-hangers in place!
So this is where the Mejahil from the Mummy franchise was inspired from.
Fantastic production values. Captain Marvel Jr was Elvis Presley's favourite super hero too, it was nice to see the origin story. ⚡👌✌
Thank you sharing. Love it. This sure brings back many good memories for me….going to the movie theaters and watching old black and white series on tv. The cars are vintage 1930’s/40’s, love the coupes/sedans, and dig those convertibles. Today’s cars look like plastic throw arounds, same squarish style type no matter what brand name it is, and lacking in character appeal, let alone imagination, basically unable to distinguish one from the other. I’ll take the older cars with character designs anytime. 👍🙏🏼❤️
Hello, I first posted this video when the fan-edit was made in 2018. For a long time thereafter, it averaged less than 100 hits per day, but I've noticed that there's been a spike in hits over the last month or so. Last month, in early March, the number of hits began to go up quickly, peaking on March 31st at over 23,000 hits on that day alone. The hits have dropped since then to around 7,000 hits on April 2, and if the trend continues should be back to normal in a few more days. So what happened in March? Why the sudden spike to over 23,000 hits per day? In other words, how did you hear about this video? Were you just randomly searching Google or KZread for videos about Shazam or Captain Marvel, or did you see a link to the video on a specific website? I'd like to know. Thanks, and thanks for watching. Fan-editor Billy thanks you as well.

One Of The Best ! Iconic Movie Serials Of All Time And Great Actors !
Still better than anything made by Warner and their soulless producers and directors.
To think that in The Movie Serials The Billy Batson is a grown up but I guess it was to make easier access for a # of reasons like so that he could drive an airplane and yell Shazam! to save himself should the plane give out like it does and to also have easier access to transport himself in any vehicle and w/o having to have any grown up to do so.
Love This! I am all about old school and camp in my superheroes! Ever since George Miller re-envisioned Batman, for me it's all been down hill. Reboots, rewrites, reimagining with all the dark and brooding characters facing inner demons. Hooey! Give me fun, adventurous, escapism every time! I'll take Adam West over Christian Bale ANY day. Not that I hate the newer stuff, it's ok. I just prefer the older stuff! Cheers!

The actual title is The Adventures Of Captain Marvel.. Shazam was the elder that gives Billy Batson the power to change to Captain Marvel..The corny Shazam of today is a rip-off of the Wings Comics Captain Marvel comic books and the 1941 serial you see here. Flying effects way ahead of their time..Yes, it would be nice to see it on the big screen.
Zachary Levi, you should have watched this version, and the TV 70s show , shazam was serious in both.
How can this one be so good, and the 70s one be so lame?
This is a better version than Doofus Zachary Levi's "Shazam". "Captain Marvel" at the time of the serial was more popular than Superman. I always thought DC screwed up the Re-Branding of Captain Marvel, in the 1990s, the character was finally getting some momentum after Mark Waid and Alex Ross "Kingdom Come" showing Captain Marvel as the one true rival of Superman- the classic splash page of grinning Captain Marvel standing over prostrate Superman. DC won the copyright against Fawcett and they threw in the towel selling off Captain Marvel to DC, who couldn't use the name "Captain Marvel" on the comics due to Marvel Comics trademark of the name, so used Wizard's name for the covers instead, along with that and cheesy Saturday Morning TV show , "Shazam" became the de-facto name of Captain Marvel. DC was not going to get the name "Marvel" back on the cover, in the 1980s they wanted to re-boot the character as "Captain Thunder" (which was Fawcett's original name- hence the Thunderbolt symbol- but seemed another company was using the name so last minute change to "Captain Marvel" ) but "Crisis on Infinite Earths" cancelled the plan. Captain Thunder was revived during the "Flashpoint" saga and there was a plan to finally Re-Boot the entire "Shazam" line-up as "Captain Thunder" but apparently, DC nixed the idea, gave-up and decided to take easy route and name him "Shazam" which was stupid and lazy. Could've gone back to the roots of the original, a young boy Billy Batson who is given the power of a God by Shazam and in his naive innocence calls himself "Captain Thunder"
yes shazam 1940-1950 s years . return .
I was shocked when I heard that they were calling him Shazam. Wouldn't Billy turn into Cap or back to himself each time he would introduce himself.
