My Dad took me to see this when I was just a boy - the 1954 version. It was the first time I had been to the cinema and I remember being enthralled. In those days they used to give you 2 movies; the first would play, then there would be an intermission, then the main feature. The first movie that night was _Somebody up There Likes Me,_ a boxing movie. Dad has passed away now but finding this movie on youtube has enabled me to relive a very special time. Thank you for posting this. You have made my day.

New generation have no idea of great literature and no perception of the real meaning of the words! As for the movie, the “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” 1954 by Richard Fleischer, starring great actors : James Mason (Nemo), Kirk Douglas (Ned), Peter Lorre (Conseil)… is a masterpiece! Verne’s characters was exquisitely built and fundamentally they all had a great purpose! Nowadays the character is not that important, people are copy/paste, so Captan Nemo was right 😊

Exactly what I felt the first time I watched it. I remember getting the VHS of it as a Christmas gift when I was 9, so it was 2000. I loved the movie and the techniques they used with the color and design really made me think I was watching something from the late 70s to mid 80s. Blew my mind when I watched the ending credits and found out it was only released 3 years previous.

The feeling I get from this version is that Nemo is supposed to be Tsar Nicholas Romanov if he had survived the death of his wife and children. Even the costumes look like Russian Tsar-period outfits. The communists took Russia and executed the Romanof family…but somehow Nicholas got away. Unknown to Lenin the Tsar had a secret submarine base with advanced technology. He boarded the Nautilus and took the name “Nemo”. Now Tsar Nicholas “Nemo” Romanov prowels the ocean looking for Russian Naval vessels to sink and destroy. Amassing power and wealth Nemo plans to take his country back by Naval might alone!

Strange.....There was not a single main character in this movie that I found had an honorable personality. There was not a single one as portrayed that I would care to be acquainted with. Most movies have at least one likable character. Only in the opening sequence with the father and son was there innocence and compassion revealed. However, there truly was some spectacular close-up video of some marine life.
An interesting moral message. Captain Nemo was castigated for sinking the Lincoln. And yet ,it was Captain Farragut that fired first. I have to wonder what the Professor , Sophie and Ned would have said if Farragut had sunk the Nautilus instead ? With them on the Nautilus of course. I don't see that Captain Nemo was wrong.

Captain Nemo had the free options to withdraw, or cause minimal damage to the enemy ship. He unnecessarily killed all onboard the enemy ship, but that said he did it for a larger political objective, so you can make a case for both sides. If his message was to promote peace and restraint, this decision goes against that and shows that he’s a torn and conflicted person. That’s what makes this film so real and 4 dimensional in the depth of characters and complicated lives. I rest my case.

Nemo had sent three ships limping back to port without any obvious provocation. Farragut had been sent out to find the culprit and stop it. The first strike came from Nemo. Attacking any ship at sea especially a passenger ship would be considered an act of aggression and even war. Nemo's honor code seems a bit screwed.

Thank you, enjoyed!
I loved the book as a kid. There are many versions of this story that got it right, other versions, not so much. I tend to be picky when the source material is so close to my heart. I can forgive a lot if they put a logical twist in. I'm going to reserve judgement until I get to the end credits... I'm in the 28th minute now. They're doing very well so far. More to come... End credits rolling now. There were a few changes but they stayed relatively true to the original text. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good movie. 👍✌️🖖

How wonderful it was to observe under the sea. Such different plants and different fish it’s amazing just amazing. All these different living creatures. And the food we can eat like fish and plants, Truly unbelievable to believe that you could survive in a submarine under the sea. I didn't know this version existed. I grew up with the Disney version and one of the things that fascinated me was the Nautilus sub. I couldn't get enough of it, what a fantastic design, looked like a fish, those eyes heading towards the doomed warship, and it had the barbs to tear a hole in them, brilliant design, like the Seaview in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, a beautifull design. I must say this Nautilus by comparison is dead boring. The 60s was a wonderfull time for design, especially America cars.
@randalmontgomery4595

I too LOVED the 1954 Nautilus as Verne's book has it mistaken for a sea monster. When I was at Disney World in 1999 they had several of them you could ride in. Changing the sub and the plot to a mistaken whale made for a bland sub. Other than that I thot this 1997 version was about a 7 compared to 10 out of 10 for the 1954 Disney version. PS I too think the US cars of 1950 -70 were much better looking than before and after.

It is not a remake, but slightly different film inspired by Jules Verne’s novel. But not true to the novel itself. As an example, in the novel professor Aronnax is Pierre Aronnax, a French doctor in medicine turned professor at the Paris National Museum of Natural History. He isn’t accompanied by his daughter like in the movie but by his domestique, named Conseil. A 30 years old man. In the novel, the man with the harpoon is French Canadian Ned Land, unlike in the movie where he appears to be a vulgar American. Etc….
