I think your Idea to make the hood optional will be the best way :) keep it up ! It already looks great

Well, about the hood.. From what I can tell, the in game outfit is same as official art, just has a hood. I think you should make the hood be able to button on and off with buttons which aren't very visible.

Layer the fabric to make it thicker

Coat material must be some leather with woolen padding to protect wearer from those chilly northern winds. Hood... could be anything: wool, tweel, linen, whatever makes you feel good. Can you put a link to those boots? I like the look of them.

If you're not using leather try faux suede instead, it should look really good but not be as expensive or hard to work with.

if you heat textute it corectly it does look like leather i have tryed it for a cosplay and it came out great
