I live in downtown Salem Massachusetts right where the witch trials happened, and since this song came out someone has played it through their external car speakers every day in October. It's an interesting tradition.

@@darkwitch4677 People at that time were heavily religious. The government was Church ran, and they followed the Bible for every little task they did. The Bible forbids witches, and also liars. So if someone made a witch accusation it was completely true.

I can’t believe it if this song is not in any movies. For one thing it’s amazing, and gives me chills! But also a strong message that could connect well in so many major cinema movies! It would sound amazing in the background.

Same. Whenever I rewatch AHS Coven, I think it's too bad that the song didn't exist back then when they produced that season, that's the only show for me that deserves this song. 🖤

I'm a french guy from the east of France born in 81. I was always dreaming about america's landscape while listening to albums that sounded like a large panorama (don't laugh, Lorraine is called the french Texas). It helped me to believe I was a cow boy even if my name is purest french as cheese. Your song reminds me what I was feeling, why I always loved this kind of music (french variety is poor as nowhere else...that's why I needed to find music elsewhere).

@@shizukagozen777 et ben c'était le surnom à l'époque du minerai de fer puis de l'acier. Quand j'étais petit j'entendais toujours ce nom. On trouve plein d'articles qui en parlent, notamment sur l'histoire de la sidérurgie. En cherchant quelques secondes. Il y a aussi de nombreux ouvrages et films qui y font référence et beaucoup d'études sociologiques notamment de l'université de Lorraine (je peux vous donner quelques noms de chercheurs très intéressants sur l'identité ouvrière notamment, l'histoire des hauts fourneaux, qui parlent aussi de cette expression). Le surnom était lié au sol et à la main d'oeuvre qui a nécessité beaucoup d'immigration. Il vient surtout de journalistes mais était repris par analogie au fait que la Lorraine aspirait beaucoup de familles pour ses besoins tant son sol avait à offrir

“Burn the Witch” talks about discrimination in our society, making a parallel with the witch-hunts that used to happen in early ages. Shawn James sings by the perspective of a person considered by the Estate as a witch, but it’s a false accusation. The metaphor can be seen on “What they don’t understand, they condemn” and “What they can’t comprehend must meet its end” as some people tend to discriminate what they don’t want to see as they don’t understand it.

it's pretty irrelevant whether the accusation is false or not. witchcraft is a religious practice ehich christians didn't like. it's a pitty that the circumstances under which we say the trials were cruel were those of it having to be a false accusation, when in reality, they were a cultural genocide.

Despite having her skin akin to melting butter and appeared to be falling off, she silently bore the pain as she gritted her teeth. Even in the face of death, the young woman still prides herself in her unwavering resolve. She will never give in. The typically clamoring villagers were also silent. They usually celebrated loudly as the witch at the stake struggled and let out screams of immense suffering as they burned. After all, another witch exterminated is always a matter worth celebrating. But who could’ve thought that the simple actions of a woman refusing to cry out in despair would leave such a bitter taste in their mouths. Clenching his fists till his knuckles turned white, the arrogant son of the village chief gritted his teeth in annoyance. He was once enamored by that woman. She was brave, bright, wise, and undeniably gorgeous. She was everything he couldn’t become. He lusted for her. He wanted her. But she refused him. In his eyes, she was the lucky one to be chosen by him. Believing himself to be considerate, he gave her a second chance in front of the villagers. He thought that addressing his marriage proposal to her in public would pressure her to agree, and yet the young woman still adamantly refused him. If only she agreed, but now she needs to die for the humiliation she caused him. It took a while to convince everyone that she was a witch. But to be honest, it wasn’t as hard as he thought it’d be. The young woman was literate, well spoken, and quite knowledgeable in matters of medicine, which should have been impossible for the likes of her. All that he did was start rumors about her that covertly blames her for all the minor accidents that happened in their village. The hateful villagers were also quick to jump in on the rumors and even started blaming the poor woman for the famine and sickness the village was going through. Finally, he placed pieces of “evidence'' in her home and had the villagers search her house afterward. The woman was then convicted of witchcraft, and his plan finally worked. But he just can’t help but feel unsatisfied. He went through many lengths just to see her cry and scream in agony. He wanted her to beg for his forgiveness. But she knew what he wanted and once again refused to give him the satisfaction, even in as she drew her last breath. As the fire started to die out and the woman in the stake was now nothing but a figure of black, the crowd finally started to disperse and the young man who was the root of it all only stood there glaring at her charred corpse, unmoving. Afterwards, several men began to clean up and poured water on the remaining pyre and slowly placed her dark cadaver on a wooden wagon. Dragging the wagon, they went up on the hills to a nearby lake and immediately threw her corpse into the stagnant lake water and rushed back to the village. The lumps of coal, ash, dirt, and her body sank in the murky lake. But then, as she finally sank to the bottom, the gentle water currents slowly guided the dissolved ashes and burnt corpse together. Piece by piece, her body became whole, and her eyes softly opened once more. Those foolish idiots knew nothing but point fingers, blame others, and condemn those who they deem as too different. Now, they have unknowingly created what they sought to destroy. A witch.

I love how Shawn Jame's songs ahve actual substance to them he tells stories takes you on a journey its simply marvelous.

I really love this song. It stirs something deep inside of me, and while it hasn't come to witch burning times again, I still suffer from hate and phobia and malignant gossip because I am a witch. On a few occasions, people have even accused me of devil worshipping and of doing black magick. That is deeply insulting when it is not your practice and it's just twisted fear and judgement and false accusations from them. For this modern world, some people are just so backward. Why is true freedom, including freedom to be yourself so hard to achieve? :( But thanks so much for such a deep and powerful song!
