It's kinda traumatizing losing your hair. My gf doesn't realize that. I went from having this flowing golden mane to what resembled a dying forest. My moment when I finally decided to start shaving was at a convenience store, I looked up at they're security camera feed (which was facing the cashier" and saw a guy and thought to myself " I'm thinning out but at least I'm not as bad off as that guy" and as you can guess that guy was me.

i agree with you it is traumatizing, i started losing my hair young at the age of 19. i had long dreadlocks i had been growing for 5 years. i went to my loctician to get my hair retwisted and he told me my locs were thinning. over the course of about three months i started to notice my hair was thinning in a U pattern so i immediately cut them off thinking that my locs were the problem. to make a long story short it was good ol' male pattern baldness my dads bald, grandfather and a lot of other men in my famly.

I can feel you. I used to have such a thick and long hair myself that majority of woman would've been jealous of. At it's prime it was super thick and it was so long that it reached past my lower back and I'm a tall guy at 190 cm. And then like 4 or 5 years ago it started happening and yesterday was the day I finally decided to shave it all off instead of trying to hide my huge bald spot, although it was still possible due to my still rather long hair. I think it was the best decision I have done in a long time and while I'd still prefer to have my thick hair, which was a huge part of being me, I think it's a lot better to shave it all off than try to desperately hide it. And I'm positively surprised how good my bald head looks. It's just gonna take some time to get used to it after having a long hair for more than 12 years. And all this tips for shaving are more than welcome so here I am watching them :)

  • @Flanjam240

Yeah thats really the best thing to do when you notice your balding. I shaved my head as soon as i noticed it was male pattern baldness, and now it doesn't bother me. I think what bothered me the most was thinking that i wouldn't be attractive anymore, but surprisingly i have no problem with women and i still get compimented the same as i did when i had hair. So at the end of the day its better to just accept the way you look and not put too much thought into how other people see you, because really its not a big deal and being bald is actually pretty common.

Excellent video, Joseph. Thanks for taking time to share it. I'm considering going with a shaved head (my hair was pretty much gone, in the same way you described yours, so I went with the über-short buzz a few months ago), but so far I've been content just keeping it "buzzed". I've had a couple of "chrome dome" friends who warned me about razor nicks and burns, but your video is very informative, and makes me think this might be do-able in the near future. It looks great on you. Thanks again.

+RobertsDigital Do not use cheap, disposable razors. Something like a Mach III should be used. After clipping the hair short, take a shower to wash off the bits of tiny hair and moisturize the skin. Use a decent shaving cream, preferably one with aloe. Take short strokes and rinse off the blade to unclog it from blobs of hair that stick in between the blades.

For the couple of questions about how to dry a razor, here's a quick tip I got years ago from a well known stylist. Corrosion requires bacteria and moisture. Fill a small spray bottle with simple alcohol. Rinse the blades really well, shake off the water, then spray the blades with a pump or two of alcohol and let it dry. The alcohol kills all bacteria, then evaporates which completely dries the blades. I get way over a month out of any quality cartridge, sometimes as much as 2 full months.

Ok. This is for those with bumps and scrapes and painful shaving. Only because everyone needs different shaving methods. First, I don't shave in the shower, I waste too much water. Fill the sink with hot water and shave after you shower. While the sink fills, add a little oil to your dirty dome. I like to use a badger brush to really lather up my shaving soap. As for the razor, 5 blades is incredibly expensive and wasteful. Use a good old fashion double edge safety razor. It's about 10 cents a blade and the single blades are better for people who get bumps and burns from shaving. Shave with the direction of your hair, then across it, then against if you feel you must go that far. Use a little tension by tightening your skin using your free hand. After you're done, rinse with cold water. Finish off with an alum block for nicks and a little aftershave lotion. I know all this sounds long, but it really takes about 10 minutes and makes my head much happier than what I just watched.

Thanks Charles. I agree with some of your points and appericate your comments. I am putting together a list of different methods for shaving to eventually post a few more videos on the subject. i used a regular cartridge razor the first time i shaved my head. I still have all my hair though and it's really thick and wiry so it really cut me up even just doing with the grain and left bumps everywhere. I found a safety razor with astra superior platinum blades and headslick shaving gel to be the only way to go for me. With the headslick you can just keep respreading it wherever you need it unlike cream and lets you go over the same spots over and over if you need to without causing irritation. I've been doing it everyday for about 4 months now. works great.

@TheEsotericDesi You know at first (two months or so) no matter what I did, I would find a way to nick my head and bleed like there was no tomorrow. Shaving your head is a lot like shaving your face in that with time your skin adjust to the irritation of the razor blades. I use the Gillette Fusion razor with the Head Blade shaving cream. Make sure when you do shave, to take it slow and dont apply too much pressure. When you get comfortable with it you can speed it up.

From my experience the "green bar" assist in the initial shaving but will wear out within a few days, making the user think that it is time to replace the blade. This is not the case. With proper care you should be able to use your razor for about 2-4 weeks. I normally can make my blades last for about a month or so before they start to irritate my skin. I use the Gillette Fusion, which is the five bladed system and it seems to work for me. Although it is not cheap, you pay for what you get.

I know what you mean about hair thinning in spots. My first head shave was in a barber shop and the barber remarked, "This is swimming with the tide, but a little bit faster." I find that gel shaving cream that comes in a tube instead of aerosol works even smoother -- my hair is really coarse and needs softening.

Haha! Nice vid, dude. At 49 years of age, I had reached the point that I was kidding myself. I had always had hair down to my waist and wore a gorgeous pony tail that made me look like a stallion. But over the past few years...the pony tail had gotten shorter and the top of the head had thinned to the point of looking pathetic. About 3 months ago I laid the razor to it and I've been happier ever since. I love not having to deal with all of that damned hair!!

@davidharry yes use gillette fusion hydro gel its the provide best lubrication for your head in my opinion, been shaving for 2 years, as for razor any good 3 blader will do make sure as your shaving to use your other hand to feel for any missed spots to get it all smooth, then moisturizer NOT aftershave finally take a shower and exfoliate your head it scrub it lightly with some sort of scrubbing implement or you'll get lots of flakes eeww, then pat dry after shower and check out slybaldguys

I shave my head sometimes when i get bored to my hairstyle, but what i recommend is to shave with the grain and dont put any pressure on the blade.

Great video! I'm a fan of the Fusion 5 blade razor as well for my head. The back of my neck is the worst for me, and like you, behind my ears! I live in Japan, and there are AMAZING barbers here (tokoya-san) that do the straight blade razor, its a treat I do once in a while, with the hot towels and all the great Japanese type massage in the mean time! If you're hear, or see of a Japanese barber, you should check it out, its WELL worth it! Thanks again!

Thanks man. I've been holding on to my hair as I have an honestly freakishly huge head. I used to have a beautiful tight hairline which was confirmed by looking at older photos; which have confirmed my intention to just shave all of. I was never a beautiful man, considering my giantly misshapen head , even though I attracted ladies occasionally, whom a truthfully shouldn't. Anyway, you encouraged me to do this, to which I owe you a thanks. Love from Sweden.

@garysquirrelreviews I would only put moisturizer on your head if it is dry. I recommend the HEAD LUBE MATTE LOTION. It leaves your grape moist and soft yet not all shiny and greasy. Thanks for viewing!!!

NC403Firefighter, Sunblock or a hat is a must if you have an exposed dome. You will notice older men, or guys that spend a lot of time in the sun will develop sun spots or freckles on the places they lack hair. So guess a good thing to go by, if you are in the sun for more than 10 minutes then go ahead and apply some good SPF containing UVA and UVB protection. Hope this helps, and good shaving!

OMG!!! My story is just the same. my barber pointed it out to me in 02. now i shave my head and face every morning. However i don't suggest 5 blades. 2 many razors on the skin. I prefer Schick Xtreme, 3 blades. it curves to the head and face.

@chaucer555 The way to get up the nerver is to cut shorter and shorter. If you have hair on top then clippers at a few mm will probably give you a nice cut.

I am not a fan of the old style Head Blade (w/two blades), but hear they have a new system coming out in September with four blades. They are sending me one, and I plan posting a video of me using it when it arrives. Check back in a month or so and I might change my mind.

Great vid!! Im just about approaching the razoring stage. Ive slowly gone down the blades from 3 to 0 over the last 2 years... My old man is the same, he always razors his head, and tells me i should too.

Just a little tip for us baldys have a look for a video called razorsharpuk its the equivalent of a piece of leather for a cut throat blade for your normal razor. I'm not selling them just think they're spot on.

It will, but it will take your head awhile to get use to the electric razor. Granted it is difficult to obtain the closeness you would receive with a traditional blade, but you could save time by doing it on the go.

i have been shaving my head for years. i found the best way is to stand under the shower head with no soap or shaving creme just water and a mach 3 razor. start shaving from the back of your head and work foward while the water is running on your head. never cut my head just a smooth shave. dont use over a three blade razor. anything bigger doesnt work very well.

+john rogers Thanks for the tip! I've started shaving my head a few days ago and am still struggling a little bit. I use shaving creme and a mach 3 razor. I just can't get it to be smooth though. I always feel tiny stubbles after the shave. I'll try shaving in the shower next time. Any other tips?
