Shaun Davey - The Parting Glass
Музыка
"The Parting Glass" by Shaun Davey, as found on the Waking Ned Devine soundtrack.
Includes the poem Forever In Your Debt by Kirk Jones, and vocals by Liam O'Maonlai.
"Forever In Your Debt"
With thanks to those who blew the wind,
And those who sailed the ship,
We sailed it tight against the tide,
And I shall be forever in your debt.
All the money that e'er I had
I spent it in good company
And all the harm I've ever done
Alas, it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now, I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be to you all!
Fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate'er befalls
Then gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all!
Of all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay.
Since it fell into my lot
that I should rise, and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all!
But since it fell into my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all!
So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate'er befalls
Then gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all!

"Michael O'Sullivan was my great friend. But I don't ever remember telling him that. The words that are spoken at a funeral are spoken too late for the man who is dead. What a wonderful thing it would be to visit your own funeral. To sit at the front and hear what was said, maybe say a few things yourself. Michael and I grew old together. But at times, when we laughed, we grew young. If he was here now, if he could hear what I say, I'd congratulate him on being a great man, and thank him for being a friend."

@@dwarfwithattitude1723 The film was shot on the Isle of Man. In Manx gaelic, this island's name is Ellan Vannin. This lozenge-shaped jewel in the middle of the Irish Sea measures 35 miles long by 12 miles at its widest. It is a beautiful microcosm of bits of all of the British Isles. Ned's cottage is in the spectacular hamlet of Niarbyl on the island's west coast. Drive to the end of the road. You'll recognise which cottage they used. The island is also famous for its motorbike road races, most famous of all is the annual TT race in the June school half term holiday. TT = Tourist Trophy. Of course, Ireland is worth visiting, too. And England, Scotland and Wales.... Good luck!
As the end is closing in and having stage 4 cancer, a rare and very aggressive form we thought we had beaten, this will be played at my funeral, not for me, but for my dear Irish wife who has endured this journey at my side. I wish no man would have to share this end, but she is an amazing wife of over 51 years. What can I say but the journey had been a rosier journey for my wild Irish rose. Don't feel sorry for me, it has been an "E'" ticket ride for the two of us... God bless all and God bless Patti.

You will NEVER be forgotten. My grandfather who served in WW2 and Vietnam shared your fate, but lived on 45 years past his "given life expectancy." Never give up, he told me. And you shouldn't either. Never. Fucking. Give. Up. My friend. There is ALWAYS hope. Give that evil devil a run for it's money at every corner, and check your corners.

Every day God shows me just how much He does love. We have a small farm. For several years I have been working to attract a rare duck (here in this part of Florida) called 'black bellied whistling duck. They began to arrive, slowly, two, four and then up to nine. A sight to see! but lately they seemed to have disappeared... until after coming home from Mass Sunday, my wife pointed out why... momma, poppa and NINE BABIES! God knew that seeing those ducks would make a tough journey lighter. I love that He gave me back my ducks!

This was played at my dads funeral, and it shall always be a part of me, and so will he. Loved ones will always be with us as long as we remember them, and some times music is that portal that gives us some precious time with them............
Cancer took my lovely mum away from us, deepest gratitude to the Hospice in Blanchardstown for looking after her...I miss her so much...Ireland is never the same without her there when I go home.
Let me quote Waking Ned Devine: David Kelly was a great actor, but I don't ever remember the world giving him the appreciation he deserved. The words that are spoken at a funeral are spoken too late for the man that is dead. What wonderful memories he has given us.... When David grew old, he made the world younger, if he was here now, if he could hear what I say, I'd congratualate him on being a great actor, and thank him for all those moments he'd given us to cherish. As a spaniard that lived for six years in Dublin and having been invited to assist a baptism, a weeding, and a funeral, no jokes about it, found it amazingly surprised that the funeral was the most.... Don't know. It was the one that I cried the most, but the one that still remember, even the date. God bless
Every time I hear the line "Since it fell into my lot, that I should rise and you should not.", it makes me tear up. There is something so beautiful about the call answer of this song (the dead man singing and his comrades responding in harmony), that really hits you. I hope someone fills to me the parting glass when it is my time not to rise.
I end up crying every time I hear this song.
i'm here thankfully not because my family lost somebody, but just because i find this song bloody beautiful. my condolences to anyone who lost a loved one.
Anyone who sings this song to a friend that's going away brings the humble joy to me very soul. Thank you all that appreciate the heritage that has been granted to me from my papa and forever more your days be merry.
I love this song. My great grandfather served in WWI near the end of the war and in WWII he lost his hearing from a cannon in his left ear. I'm glad I got to know him. Despite my young age I remember this song at his funeral my uncles and grandfather singing it. Really makes me wish I had gotten to know him more
Was 14 when my grandma passed away, now 20 and I still listen to this song all the time to remind me of all our memories, I can still hear her thick Irish accent when I think of her - she was the best. Hope everyone is having a good day :)

David Kelly made me understand how much the seasoned and experienced actors brought to the movie experience... I was also deeply saddened when I found out that Ian Bannen died much too soon... his portrayals of great archetypes in Hope and Glory and Waking Ned Devine are at the top of my all-time favorite characters. I can only hope that I will age gracefully and be as colorful as David Kelly and Ian Bannen...

Alot of talk about Ed Sheeran's version, Which is understandable with Ed being a great singer and really making it into the big time but please remind this was a old Irish Folk song and no one in the world sing's this better than the Irish, The passion makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, The bagpipes are haunting yet beautiful. A true classic song. Good and Joy be to you all - God bless

Jackie) Come on, we're almost at the top! Sleep it off later like the rest of them - Do we all have a drink? - Here, Maurice. Take a drink... ..and remember the man. Then raise your spirits to the sky! Raise them to Ned Devine! God bless you, Ned! And may we be forever in your debt. To Ned Devine

Love the Irish Music.... Beautiful!!!
I'm half-Irish (both my parents are half-Irish, half-English) and we listen to a lot of Irish music. I was quite surprised when I heard this for the first time a few a months ago, because I'd never heard it before. Such a brilliant song!
You passed away this/last night 15/5/24 Shane, you were a fantastic musician and a great friend, sadly taken too soon, 56 years young, rest in peace my friend Colin ❤🙏
