+Velation Good directing doesn't make someone act well. Star Wars was weird, sci-fi shit with a fantasy storyline and I would find that hard to connect to let alone act well with. Other people could do it but people are different. I think this film was much more grounded, down to earth and dealt with issues a lot of people encounter daily, and Christensen did a good job in it. So did Saarsgard for that matter: he's a very human actor who can seem too laid back and quiet - no Meryl Streep - but in this film the subtleties in his acting/expressions etc make every scene epic and very real. edit: **so much wank in one comment**

He wasn't even that bad in the prequels. I think it just boiled down to how poorly they were written and directed. Hayden Christensen is very good at playing snobby, bratty teens and that's exactly the character Anakin turned out to be in the prequels, for better or for worse. Definitely was the perfect fit for the role of Stephen Glass.

I think the most underrated aspect of Christensen's performance was how brilliantly he was able to play Glass as meek, mild-mannered and self-effacing. Glass duped so many people for so long because they never thought him capable of breaking the rules, much less make things up out of thin air. It takes a certain amount of confidence to be this openly deceptive with such wild stories and never get called out on it by those you work so closely with. It literally took someone who never met him to stop think "wait a minute, this all sounds like a crock!". The real life Glass is no looker; he's very nerdy looking and gives off the "virgin that still lives with his mother" vibes. Exactly the type of guy people would say "he doesn't have the balls to even jay walk". Christensen on the other hand is tall, athletic and handsome, the polar opposite of Glass, someone who in high-school could get away with murder based on charms alone. But Christensen, to his incredible credit, managed to come off as weak, pathetic and insecure, not only in his dialogue, but most importantly, in his body language. His eyes and posture every time he asked "are you mad at me" and "did I do something wrong" was brilliant, and the little things along the way, such as when he think that Chuck is starting to believe his story out in Hacker Conference explaining where everyone sat at the table. He has this very bright smile, the opposite of duper's delight, so genuine in his belief that he and Chuck are agreeing with each other. Or the other great little moment, when after Chuck removes him from the office and then Glass gets a security guard to let him back inside the office and you can hear him all smiles and pleasantries, and only 90 seconds later, he alludes to Chuck that he is suicidal. I completely forgot I was watching Christensen in a performance and really believed I was watching a real person desperately try to worm his way out of trouble.

Roger Ebert in his review described Glass as like a puppy that made a mess on the carpet, but knows he'll get away with it because he's cute and everyone finds him lovable. Glass uses the self-effacing, humble act like a lethal weapon to make everyone want to support him.

Quite the opposite, they said they were fooled by Glass cuz he was popular and charming. Not because he was an innocent little angelic puppy that no one could believe would be sinister. I don’t get it. I don’t see how Glass could have ever been the popular man “in the office” if you will…and your description of him is SOLID. But I guess the office was full of nerds and he was their nerdy king. It’s the only way this makes sense.

@@missym877 Glass was well-liked because he was humble, self-deprecating, and highly empathetic. Basically everyone who knew him singled out his ability to listen and make you feel like you were being "heard". Part of the reason everyone was so betrayed when this came to light was that they felt the entire time he'd just been seeing them as potential cons/outlets for inspiration.

"The actual events, time-spans, and details of various themes of these conventions not only depends on the specific convention attended but also its perceived reputation. Typically the actual details of any given convention are couched in mild secrecy due to the legality of certain panels, as well as the willingness of attendees to explain themselves to law enforcement and less computer-savvy individuals..." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_security_conference#Hacker_conferences

The giveaway was that the number for Jim Ghort that Stephen was about to give to Pennenberg would most likely lead to a phony voicemail of Jim Ghort that either Stephen or his brother made to further validate his lie. But pennenverg knew it wasn’t a Nevada number. So when Chuck said “give him the number” they presumably dialed it and heard the fake voicemail saying it was Jim Ghort which couldn’t be since it’s not Nevada
