    You’re very welcome! Glad I have been able to help! And as far as sharpening the heal of the blade all the way to the riccaso, you just need to make sure your stone can get to it. So with your stone in the guide rod the edge of it should either be parallel with the ricasso or slightly angled away so that the stone can get entire edge. Use sharpie and it your stone isn’t getting to it, you may need to adjust how you have the blade clamped. Besides that you just grind away at it until it’s Reprofiled with the rest of the blade. Don’t move on from the first stone until you have it all worked out!

    Nice video ! I was curious of S90V and now own 2 knives in this steel. Haven't sharpened my Native 5 CF yet but I have a manly in S90v with 0.005" behind the edge it's a monster knife ! Sharpens really nicely too, I'm suprised that they would actually use S90V and heat treat it correctly enough for this price. I like that you take the edge back to the ricasso. I started doing the same with venev diamond bonded stones, with a sharp 90° angle on a stone it's pretty nice for that kind of job. Not that easy on a fixed angle system though.

    Thanks brother! And believe it or not I’m pretty sure this is the first knife in S90v that’s I’ve sharpened! It sharpened up pretty easy, honestly I don’t notice much of a difference when sharpening these different super steels! When you have nice diamond stones it makes it no different than sharpening anything else because the diamonds cut so fricken good! This did take a really nasty sharp edge though and it maintained its bite even after taking it to 0.10 micron! And DAMN 5 thou behind the edge?!?! What knife is that on?! I bet that’s a slicey MF!!

    Yeah brother, that’s one thing that has made a big difference in sharpness for me is slowing down a little bit and making sure I’m completely apexing the entire edge on the first stone when reprofiling because that is the foundation for your entire edge! And also if you don’t have it fully apexed in one spot it will not be sharp there! Practice makes perfect though! It’s a learning process for all of us and I’m still continuing to learn things also! That’s one of the best things about sharpening is that it really just gets better and better! Every time you think you’ve reached the top, give it a couple more sharpening and you’ll see even more progression in the level of sharpness and the precision of your edges!

    Just keep at it bro, shouldn’t take too long, make sure you have it clamped tight and don’t spend too much time on one side. If the bevel is smaller on one side you need to stay on that side until it’s even with the other side and at that point you should have a even burr for sure.

    Hi, can't believe how easy that was with that diamond stone, it really looks like a must-have for this super steel ! However, I am wondering, how does the edge hold when you sharpen S90V to such a beautiful mirror finish ? I have seen quite a few people mention that they prefer a "toothy edge" with S90V, to make use of those big vanadium chunks, what do you think ?

    Given that Sean never answered this comment, I'm assuming he just never saw it (because it was an older video by the time you wrote it), but I'd be curious to know the same thing so I'm hoping that with this new comment from me, he'll see yours and give an answer. I'd be very curious to know what the edge retention is like with an edge _this_ polished. I use the Wicked Edge system and have their diamond stones from 50 to 3000 grit, their strops (which I use with their 1 and 0.5 micron diamond emulsions), as well as their 0.1 micron lapping films. I've used all of these to take various steels to a mirror edge: S110V (my blurple PM2), Magnacut (on both my large and small Sebenza 31s, my Hogue Deka, and my Protech Malibu), S30V (my PM3, Canis, and Spyderco Smock collab), S90V (on my sprint run Yojumbo), 20CV (my older Malibu and my WE Knives Vision R), and finally M390 (my brother's Bestech Ostap Hel Lito). Getting a gorgeous mirror edge is relatively fast and easy with the Wicked Edge system, and while I've found that there's just nothing as scary sharp as a true, mirror-polished edge - especially when it's done at a 30-34 degree (inclusive) angle - the edge also doesn't last as long as a toothy edge does, and it doesn't seem to matter what steel we're talking about. I'd definitely be interested to hear what Sean's experience was like with this knife.

    I haven’t had any problems with polished s90v edges, it holds up really well for me. The best performance ive gotten has been from 15-17dps finished with a f400 venev resin bonded (diamond or cbn) stone and then I strop it on basswood and kangaroo with 3 and 1 micron gunny juice. With that combination I can get a beautiful edge that is sharp and still has some aggression and good edge retention. If you go above F400 or finer than 1 micron diamond emulsion when stropping, you will lose some of the sharpness and edge retention.

    I actually already have a couple videos on how to fix detents! I have one on replacing your detent and I also have one on strengthening it! The thumbnail for the video is the Spyderco Subvert because that’s the knife I demonstrated on. JUST MAKE SURE that you watch the full video first, don’t skip through it because there’s some very important things that mean the difference between getting it perfectly tuned or making it worse and creating detent lash! It’s not hard to do but you definitely have to be careful and patient. You’re especially just opening the detent hole a hair bigger so the detent ball can sit deeper down into it (makes it stronger) but if you open the hole too much and the detent ball goes completely into the hole or if the hole ends up bigger than the detent then it’s gonna feel really shitty and then becomes a much more complicated fix!

    It’s similar performance but tougher! And yeah when you are setting your profile you want to make sure you have completely apexed your edge and a pronounced burr along the entire edge is a sure way to tell! • @BLADESANDFADESOFFICIAL

    @BLADESANDFADESOFFICIAL

    @@stinkybuddydog yes, the reason for the large burr in the beginning is just to make sure you have apexed the entire edge! I like to get the burr like that evenly across the entire edge of both sides and then throughout the entire rest of the sharpening process I’m trying to get that burr smaller and smaller to the point that when I’m on my last stone of the progression I have no visible burr and can’t feel it! Or atleast small enough that I can just barley feel it and it feels the same on both sides! Then the strop can easily handle removing that last little microscopic bit of burr!

  • @BLADESANDFADESOFFICIAL

    @BLADESANDFADESOFFICIAL

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@stinkybuddydog it doesn’t necessarily have to be as big as what I did right here. Everyone has their own ways and there are many ways to achieve excellent edges! This is just what I like to do just to be 10000% sure that the entire edge is completely apexed because there’s nothing worse than going through all the progressions and then finding out you have one spot of the blade that isn’t sharp because it didn’t completely apex there! Also it’s removing just a little extra steel so your getting to the steel that you know is fresh and going to perform the best. You don’t have to do it this way but it’s just what works well for me! 👊🏼😁

    How'd that level of sharpness on the folded paper translate to a BESS score?

  • @BLADESANDFADESOFFICIAL

    @BLADESANDFADESOFFICIAL

    Жыл бұрын

    Has several variables to it such as blade thickness and geometry where to as with the BESS test it’s essentially testing how fine your apex is. Both tests offer important insights when you want to check the quality and sharpness of a edge but I’m not sure theres a direct correlation. Ultimately if you consistently can do the freestanding paper push cuts clean through, you are in good shape!

Im sure it wouldn’t hurt to count but I don’t really think about it much when I’m sharpening, I just kinda do it off my intuition.
