sharpening planer blades which is new to me & bothers me for a long time. [woodworking]
I go out to sharpen planer blades to a service shop. It always bothers me. And sharpening costs 3 $ a blade. The service man doesn't look like he is satisfied with small charge. I am unhappy too.
Couples of weeks ago I happened to watch a video related with sharpening on KZread. Happy happy moment!! I decided to sharpen my blades myself. And now I have sharpened mine.

Excellent workmanship! The implementation with the tools you have on hand and little consumables deserves praise.

If you make the block a little wider, then you can have three slots, that way all the blades will sharpen/wear at the same rate. As is now one blade has slightly more material removed, because you sharpen it more (it is supporting the block on the one side when you sharpen two different blades). I like this simple design.

suggest longer abrasive paper because in this set up the ends of the blades cut slower/less than the middle which is always on the abrasive. If the slots in the wood jig loosen with shrinkage and they may, it can be fixed with wedging a thin piece of some material to firmly hold the blades. A third groove for the third blade would be a good upgrade, so that all three blades can sharpen the same amount and be done at the same time.
Tienes mi 👍 buena idea.

Nicely done & great idea J! However, I would recommend that you get a blade guard for that planer. Your fingers are way to close to that spinning blade and all it takes is one slip for disaster to occur! Just my opinion...........

I was going to buy a new set of blades for $70 but then i found this. Must try
good~~

Great invention, I don't own a jointer/planer yet, but sharpening the blades looks like a chore. I wanted to comment about cutting those grooves/dados without the riving knife. I had a kickback accident with my table saw last week, the first in 5 years and I was making a cut similar to the one you did, with only 1/8 in. of the blade exposed and a riving knife attached. It hit my hip like a bullet and turned it purple. It really caught me by surprise, fortunately, the micro jig grr-ripper saved my fingers.. 😅 Now I know to stand to the side when making any riskier cuts.

Pretty sure you cannot make those cuts with a riving knife in place . At least not on my saw. Guessing they perform several potential functions, including keeping cut wood from closing due to stresses in the wood and grabbing the blade. Cuts like these are not thru and i am guessing are unlikely to close on the blade.

@@charlescote8391 Good point. J is a pro so I'm sure he's doing it safely. 👍 The riving knife on my saw has a position for non-thru cuts, and my zero clearance insert has an opening for the knife as well, so I never take it off unless it's a dado stack. I just wanted to share my experience as it was pretty recent and kind of unexpected. I'm also extremely careful and methodical with my work and tools. 😅

What if your jointer has odd number of blades for example 3 blades, what are you going to do with the one that is left over? Make a dummy blade?
@nickyork8901
I wondered that, but you can alternate in pairs to make sure they all get the same number of strokes each, for even sharpening. Would need to mark the blades not to get them mixed up. Essential that they are all sharpened the same amount.

I sharpen two first. And I take sharpened one from the jig and put the unsharpened one in the slot again. Sharpen again. I don't think there will be vibration because sharpening would be very very small amount. Thanks for watching sir.

I agree with you. I sharpen two first. One of the sharpened knives and the unsharpened one second. The other one of first sharpened knives and the second sharpened one. I don't think this way of sharpening makes major problem. The amount of sharpening is pretty small. Thanks for watching sir.

You shouldn’t tighten or undo the bolts from one end to the other... you should alternate from one end to the other, otherwise you will bend your knives

No guard when using the planer, and watch where his right hand is as the wood exits the end of the cut!! And sharpening one blade twice is not a good idea, the blades will be of balance!!!
Why can not we buy such blocks ready!!? I can not find anything on Ebay or Ali etc.. Every hardware store should offer such blocks ready. Then better made of plastic. And possibly with benefits. E.g. four adjustable wheels in the corners, which ensure an absolutely uniform grinding.
