Love your work! What do you to to protect from rusting?

You’ve definitely put miles on your stones. Your 1000 grit is noticeably thinner compared to my 6 month old. Great work!

I have some of the same jigs and stones you have. Unfortunately I have it seems every other type of sharpening medium know to man. My goal though is to sharpen by hand without a jig like Rob Cosman or Paul Sellers does.

I only use the cheap blue guide for sharpening. For me works like a charm. :)

I use the rods as support for chissels, and not the gap. :)

That Veritas looks very nice, I wish I could afford it.. I have a question: you use the diamond plate only for flattening the stones? How do the coarse water stones compare to using the diamond plate directly?

Yes, I use the diamond only for flattening (I used it too to grind before having the #320, but I wear it and now I regret that :) ) My diamond is #400, I use it to flatten the #320 water stone too, it works, but is not the best practice. Next I wan't to get the #160 diamond specially to use it on coarse stones too.

Nice video. I also have the Veritas grinding device, I also use it for my chisels. As sharpening stones I have diamond sharpening stones for the planing knives. For my Japanese chisels, I have Japanese water stones from King. I also sharpen the western chisels on the diamond sharpening stones. I also sharpen the knife from my Japanese planer on the Japanese water stones freehand. Well I could also clamp it on the Vertias device because I have a holder for short irons.

Thanks Gunter! I wanted to get the short blade attach for the Veritas guide, but eventually used the cheap guide. I see that they came out with a miniature honing guide for the mini tools, I wanna get that one :)

Hello Adrain, Thanks for the answer. I also bought a barrel roll for the Veritas grinding guide. This is for the western planer knives, so that you can "round off" the corners to avoid getting any planing marks. 😉

Hello Adrian, very nice video, I have been waiting a lot for this one. Thanks also for your willing to answer questions I have a couple. For the veritas guide, do you use oil or something to avoid rust or what do you use to keep it as new. For the Japanese blade, do you fit it with the veritas guide without angle right, I mean, the guide fits the bevel of the blade and not the blade fits any angle right? Have you tried any other stones? I have different ones and want to know why would you recommend these. Finally, sorry, any advice to have a good sharp? I have noticed in my case I'm not very good and really want to improve in that. Thanks again for this, is really appreciated.

Hi Ricardo! Thank you! - sometimes I use some camelia oil (this is volatile oil), but not that often, although I read in their instructions that you should do that to maintain it. Careful with other oils, don't use too much so will not spill on the stone, it will ruin it. - exactly, try and try until you fit. - just a Naniwa Homestone 1000/3000 as my first ever stone. It's not that fantastic, wears rapidly and very slow. If look for a reasonable priced one for beginners go for a combo stone like 1000/6000 from any Japan made manufacturer, Cerax for ex makes one good. - other than patience I don't know :) Use guides in the beginning if you're not confident free hand, grind the bevel until you see a consistent color/texture all over the area, if your blade is dull or chipped grind it, no mater what, until on the back/flat side you won't see those anymore, just the clean line of the tip.

Are you using the diamond stone as a lapping stone? Have you ever considered getting a true lapping stone from Shapton, or is the diamond stone perfect for lapping with? Hope this reaches you. I love your setup so much, and I've been slowly collecting tools to start woodworking as well. Thanks so much for the amazing content.

Yes, I partially blame the roller, but also just when I got it new it seemed to skew the blade. It is possible that the blade as new was sharpened skew then I straighten it, then the roller wore and so on :) I see that Veritas made a new miniature honing guide, I will take that one day too :))

Very nice. I understand the Atoma dressing plate comprises a diamond plate glued on a reusable steel base plate: how often do you need to replace the diamond plate? Is it reliable?

Thanks! So far, in three years, I never replaced the Atoma. It still holds decently, it looks indeed that it's wear out (I used it to grind the veritas blade some times, regret that) but I estimate it will hold another year. Don't know if is worth changing just the glued part, I remember the price difference is small, like ~70 euro just the reusable part, and 80 complete...probably in time that Alu plate (it's not steel) is no longer flat, and don't know exactly how easy is to unglue the old one, looks very well put together. And, you find yourself with a nice 10mm thick Aluminum plate for other diy projects :)

How do you clean your water stones? Mine seem to get dirty stains. Like metal particles stick in it and go rusty

I just clean the slurry at the end, I don't flatten them, I do that next time I'm sharpening. In theory, the waterstones can bend in time, so if I flatten it now, leave it for some time, I may not have it flat when using it. Depends also on the quality of the stone I think. You have these same Shapton one? My first stone was a cheap naniwa combo 1000/3000 and was not that great either in sharpening, either in maintaining it clean.

I have have 3k/8k combination watersone, but even after the 8k, it is not a mirror surface? Very cloudy? Any ideas why that might be? The previous scratch patterns are definately removed as I use a black marker to check.

Not all waterstones leave mirror surface, although they do sharp as rated. Even these Shapton I have are said not to leave a mirror polish on finer stones. I read that (some) natural stones do the same.

Is there a reason you don't use a leather strop for the finishing touch? Just out of curiosity, becuse oher woodworkers seem to consider that a part of the holy process.

I just do not like the strop for straight blades/flat tools, the idea that I make a microscopic roundish bevel on the tip.

Hi, just started with Japanese handplanes and chisels. Have been interested for a while but didn't have the time and in addition wanted to first read up on them. I also checked out your video "how to prepare a kanna" and in this video as well as here you do not tap the iron. Is that just because the ura of your blades are still were they need to be? Do you have any experience with tapping Japanese blades? Checked for a video with at least English subtitles as I feel like missing out on some crucial information in the Japanese videos I found. Maybe you have a recommendation for a good instructional video on that? Thanks in advance for the tips and for your video as well of course!

I never tapped a kanna blade, probably I will try that one day when the ura of the blades I have will dissapear. On the 3-4 kannas I have the ura came pretty decent, well not that thin as you see on more experienced users and premium kanna, but workable.

Nu înțeleg de ce trebuie lustruit tăișul secundar al lamei de rindea. Am observat ca ai ascuțit la 30 de grade pana la 8k și i-ai mai făcut unul de 32 de grade.

What about the backs?

You normally approach the back only when you get the blade new. You flatten it to the highest grit you have, not all, about 1-2 cm, and leave it like this. In time, if you consider it's not flat anymore, you may refresh it. When normal sharpening you do only the bevel then a few strokes on your highest grit stone on the back to remove the burr.

@@AdrianPreda Yes I know, but you made no reference to it at all. It's critical and novices won't know and may be frustrated when the chisel won't sharpen if they don't flatten the backs. Just saying ;-)
