Hello, "WW"; Well, "Thank you!" for pointing me in a good direction. I just bought an old (abused) Fulton 8" drawknife. I used a putty knife as a scraper to remove most of the rust then 4ought steel wool. It has a compound curve, the back is curved & the bottom curves up at the ends. So it hard to try to remove the burrs & dings where some genius messed up w/ a grinder. You technique showed me I needed to use scraps to raise the ends. That gave the clearance to smooth the edge w/ sharpening stones. I started w/ a cheap "medium" carborundum (Harbor Freight 'Gordon' Combo sharpening stone) & progressed up to 1000 grit cheap diamond plate. I've had to rework the angle some to get it to the 20°. I use the 'sword sharpening' stroke to finish the edge. I found it works really well on Scandi grinds & since a drawknife uses a similar angle it should work for it, too. Great video, Thank you, sir! Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

I’ve just recently gotten a Greenlee drawknife. I cleaned it up and it’s basically new, with charter. I put a mirror edge on mine. I managed to keep the original handles. Mine is is amazing condition for its age. Greenlee made some great tools.

If I ever saw a person grinding on a drawknife I may have to educate this individual, swiftly.

Hahahahaha........ YES! I might even recommend a minor boot to the butt! Honestly, ANY tool with high carbon/alloy edges that may be effected by heat and are expected to perform fine cuts should never be abused by any sort of powered grinding wheel. The one exception? Badly damaged/chipped blades. And only with light/short duration grinding with PLENTY of water in between to keep things cool.

I've got the same Drawknife , I just got most of the rust off it , I did cheat on the cutting edge , I took one of them sandpaper flap type wheels on a 4 1/2 " Hand grinder to polish it up , from there I went with some 600 grit sandpaper, then jumped to 1000 , an then hand stropped till razor sharp , man they got some Good Steel in those old draw knives ,

Seen alot of that exact same style of drawknife from numerous brands and I've always wondered if they were all made by in the same factory and just stamped different. Ive seen that exact style, same blade shape and profile, same handle shape, same ferrules and end caps from Greenlee, Dunlap, Sears, Craftsman, Zodak, Van Camp, and probably few others I'm forgetting.

I used to use 3 in 1 for light oil, but it eventually builds up a residue, Marvel Mystery oil lubes and preserves will without caking up in the long run.

#1 when sharpening your drawknife....... BE VERY CAREFUL!!! It is probably THE MOST DANGEROUS tool you will ever sharpen. #2 I don't know why almost everyone I see doing videos of drawknife sharpening seems to be trying to keep the bevel side a completely flat angle. Drawknives work much better when the bevel side actually has a SLIGHT radius (a gentle curve from the sharp edge fading towards the back). That radius will give you much better depth of cutting control when using your drawknife. It allows you to rock the blade edge towards you while pulling for a deeper or more aggressive cut or, roll the knife away some for less depth and a very thin shaving action. A totally flat bevel is very hard to control in comparison. #3 RELAX and take your time. Hahaha, it's a slow process but worth every minute invested.

When sharpening a drawknife it is a good idea to use some thin painters tape and cover only the cutting edge. Make a few layers. You can stretch the tape out and place it over the very edge and a few mm back and use the cutting edge or scissors to cut the tape. Repeat as many layers as needed because when you are going back and forth rubbing with your sharpening material you absolutely do not want your hand to roughly slide across thst edge. It makes me cringe just thinking about the damage that could cause, especially if you slipped and cut an artery. Yes, some tape could be a great friend when sharpening in this way

Greenlee's aren't real old as far drawknifes go but they were well made and consistently make good users.

I would suggest starting with a good bastard about ten med to light strokes then all that pig iron is gone then run at with some 220
