Thanks for making that set up so simple and obvious. You hear so much about 40/40 but this is the best video I've seen on the whole process! Thank you!

You are welcome Anthony. I also watched several a couple years ago and I still had to figure out much of it on my own. Thank you for the continued support!

A wee correction / suggestion,on the V and the parabolic gouge, you have to move the v gouge from side to side, and the parabolic, you have to rock it up and down so as to get the straight wings….the flute is opened slightly also, that way you get the wings running parallel to the grinding wheels. This is not a criticism, just to help,I work with Stuart on selling his tools,he is also my mentor.I hope this helps a little bit. Thanks for sharing the 40/40 it’s a fantastic grind.

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t fully understand but I know I’m fairly new to the 40/40 so have more to learn. I’ll have to watch some of Stuart’s videos and see if it helps your comments make more sense to me.

I'll second the commend. It's a very brief note in one of Stuarts videos but does seem important and kind of harder to do than I thought it might be. I've not quite gotten down yet.

Hi Colin. I’ve been watching some of Stuart’s videos on YT. I’m trying to find more and looked on Vimeo but seems hard to find, where I thought there were a ton out there? Thx.

Awesome video. What brand are those angle drills in the background? Been looking for one for ages 😅

Thank you for the encouragement. I got them off Amazon for $38 in 2020. They are Neiko brand. Amazon says they are no longer available but they were titled “close quarter drill”. That word search may help. Wood turners wonders has another brand for $90 but probably made by the same company. Hope that helps

Can you use a 40-40 on every tool on just spindles? Good vid BTW.

Thanks. I want to make sure I understand your question. You can use the 40/40 grind on a v-shaped flute bowl gouge. You can use that bowl gouge on bowls, plates, or spindle work. But on spindle work it is hard to control for good detail in my opinion. Great for removing material quickly. If you are asking if you can sharpen detail spindle gouges with the 40/40 grind then I would say no. It kind of fits the v-shaped bowl gouges flutes. If you watch the other sharpening videos I have in the sharpening playlist, you will see that I also sharpen my roughing gouge and parting tools on the same 40 degree platform. The main reason is so I don’t have to adjust the platform very often. Let me know if any of that makes sense.

Where can I get the Stuart Batty gauge you demonstrate in your video. I looked all around and no luck.

I got mine from Cindy Drozda. She had a website and I just got it a few months ago. Hopefully she still has some in stock.

That is the angle gauge from Stewart Beatty and I’m not sure he makes them anymore. I found one on Cindy Drozda’s website. She still had some in stock. She knows Stewart well so she can probably find one if she is out of stock. It is pretty handy and high quality.

Your digital angle finder is skewed. Check it on a 90 degree angle

It is not skewed. I checked it this morning on a square.
