    Well Ron I have to say this is the very best explanation on how to use a specific setup on any sort of grinding accessory. I have been using the 40/40 grind for awhile and have ground it free hand. I certainly want to try your method because it looks to grind everything just right. Very early this year Stuart was in town and I went to the all day demo. He has the grind down but has done it countless times. I do a lot of wood turning and I certainly am interested in you setup. Thanks for posting this. Take care, Gary

    Dear H, The leg on any gouge holding fixture should be pulled all the way up as far as it will go. It doesn't matter if it is a VariGrind 1 or 2, the ProGrind, the SharpFast, etc. You would use a 3" projection on all gouge holding fixtures also.

    Hello Ron, Keep water nearby to cool the blade if it gets too hot? I read an article in a woodturning magazine years ago which discouraged dipping hot high speed tool blades into water as this would degrade the molecular structure of the metal, causing microscopic cracks throughout the tip. Roll on 15 years 'ish, does it no longer matter? I have always laid my tool on my cast iron bandsaw table T slot and placed a heavy metal object on top of it ( a hammer ) to radiate the heat from the blade, a kind of heatsink. Do you have any thoughts on this matter. Best regards,and keep well.

    They could be correct. I don't get the edge very hot before I cool it down. My M2HSS tools hold an edge plenty long enough to satisfy me. I am not disputing what they say. I just pass along what works for me. You decide for yourself. Buy an inexpensive tool and put an edge on it. See if cooling it with water makes a difference.

    Mark: I have my regular set up blocks and the Quad Setting gauge available for 6" wheels. The demand for 6" grinding wheels is far too low to design everything for 8 & 6 both. You can't imagine the amount of design time and testing required to get things right. Also, I don't have a Wolverine system set up on a 6" grinder. I have 3 8" setups but no 6". Ron

    Have you considered a modification of your current jig to allow it to work with the Kodiak sharpening system by WoodTurnersWonders?

  • @Ronbrownsbest

    @Ronbrownsbest

    3 жыл бұрын

    My 4040 Set Up Block already works with all of those systems. The Kodiak system is a private label of the Sharp Fast System. The tool holding fixture is almost identical to the VariGrind 2. The 40/40 will work perfectly with all of them. Pull the round bar all the way up, use a 3" projection specified, and make two firm points of contact. Ron Brown Inventor

    I don't have a varigrind 2, so I have not tested it myself. I have not heard from any customers with the 2 yet either. This was an extremely difficult block to get right. The combination of leg angle and stick out took forever to figure out. It works magnificently with the VariGrind 1 using the recommended settings.

    Shouldn't cool HSS with water. HSS doesn't lose its temper when overheated, but when quenched gets brittle!

  • @Ronbrownsbest

    @Ronbrownsbest

    13 күн бұрын

    True at very high temps. You should never let your turning tool get up to that high temp before cooling off. Hot to the touch, but cool on a relative scale will have no effect whatsoever. Keep the tool cool enough to handle and you will be fine.

    This is an Email I received Sunday 3-29-20 Ron, Just a quick note to let you what I think of your new 40 40 grind setup jig. IT IS GREAT! It does exactly what you say it does, it is easy to use (if you follow directions), it is repeatable, and IT WORKS! I reground one of my older 5/8 bowl gouges and then took it to a machinist/engineering friend. He inspected and measured it thoroughly. His verdict: 40 degrees on the nose AND on the wings with a single facet. Once again you have a winner! Dick Gerard Aka bowlman
