This is Bob here. Absolutely blown away by Phil's work and his generosity! I felt like an idiot for not insuring my guitar for more but I've never had an incident shipping before. Won't make the same mistake again. Anyway, Phil absolutely nailed it here. The Epi did always seem muddy and the new pickups sound, even on KZread, like they make a world of difference. Can't wait to play it. Again, Phil couldn't have been kinder. What a class act!

Ditto. Search for demos on the amp used here. All PRS amps have a buzzy/fizzy thing in the overdrive. Every one I've ever heard. To me, both of these sets of pickups sound buzzy/fizzy & the new set sounds more pronunced in the treble freq. The stock pickups sound fine. No need to knee-jerk swap pickups till you live with it a while. (just mhwo)

There are so many people that say, after all the money you spend upgrading, you could have just bought the better one from the beginning. There's a big difference. You might not have enough to buy the top model first, and if you waited until you had enough money, you might not have had anything to play for 6 months while you saved up enough. Or maybe you just like to see the reaction from the people that spent all that money and your budget guitar sounds better or just as good. Or maybe some of us just like working on our own stuff.

As for sponsors contributing to the series, why the hell not, everybody wins. The fact that the replacement parts are of high quality is the point, not from where they came. I own a Gibson Les Paul Custom, from 2000, and this sharpened one is now it´s serious rival! Not something I would ever have said before seeing and hearing this. For Les Pauls sure, such a classy look. But all guitars have a colour that suits them same as cars. I like the tobacco sunburst for PRS, surf green strats and natural teles. If your gonna go EVH - yellow and black and anything less than bright neon for Charvel is just heathenism but not the Jem that has to be white. All SG's should be red, nothing else makes sense and Wildcat style semi's either black or white with gold trim.

From Leo: I have used quite a few items from Graphtech and all have been great and money well spent. Good Job on taking care of the guy. Here's a tip: Whenever I ship a guitar with a tilt back head stock, I cut a couple of pieces of 1 inch Owens corning rigid styrofoam house insulation panels and tape them to the back of the neck. Even if someone sat on the box, the headstock will not get any stress. I have never broken a guitar shipped this way.

Fantastic episode, I've loved every one. I hope Bob loves his guitar. I love the idea of donating the other guitar after it is fixed. Whoever receives it will be lucky. You might consider donating it to a hospital that helps people with brain injuries, music and playing instruments is excellent for recovery. It is really helping me.

What Phil did was awesome (getting a new guitar) but he's wrong on a few counts: the pickups on this guitar are not Epiphone 57's but copies of a Gibson 490R and 490T and they sound very good, the hardware on the Epi custom is an upgrade from the standard Epi fare and consists of a self-locking bridge and tailpiece, both on par with replacement bridges with die-cast saddles, quality-wise. The Graphtech bridge doesn't really do much soundwise, those saddles actually change the attack and sustain for the worse. If you want a better sound on these (stock sound is actually quite good) replace the nut with a bone nut get a Duesenberg bridge (with stainless steel saddles for more sparkle and a more pronounced attack) with an aluminum tailpiece and replace the pots with better CTS pots and you are done, no pickup replacement necessary at all imho.

I'm glad someone else said this - my opinion was that the Darkmoon neck was an amazing difference, but for the bridge comparison I liked the Epiphone a little better. I wouldn't be unhappy with either, but if I had my druthers, I'd maybe put the Darkmoon neck pickup in the bridge position and the Epi bridge pickup in the Neck position, because it's darker than the neck Dark Moon, but there's something about the way the Dark Moon bridge sounds I'm not really digging. Not a one of them sounded bad though. And you could definitely hear the Darkmoon picking up frequencies that the stock pickups left behind in both cases, which is what you want. Just for the bridge, for my ears, some of those frequencies maybe deserved to be left behind. :D
