Used to have my chains sharpened at the local hardware store for 8$ per chain. Just bought a Dremel and came across your no nonsense very informative video. I left my dull chain on the saw and after about 5 minutes the job was done, tried it on an oak stump & was very pleased with the cut. Thank you Sir.

Great Video Jerald. I recently saw these dremel sharpening stones at home depot. They came 2 to a pack for $5.50 and so instead of paying $5 to get my chains sharpened I thought I would chance it. My Stihl is 23 yrs old, I had 3 chains and bought 2 more new ones because it grinds me not to cut through a tree easily. Soooo, I took my oldest chain of 23 yrs which had been in dirt many of times and wanted to see what would happen. I never sharpened a chain before but I tell you, when I put that chain on my saw and tried my first cut with it, it was like cutting butter. No attachments, just did it by eye like you said. What a way to go. Thanks again Jerald.

Dear Mr Mitchell...... I have a chain saw that’s about 17 years old I Bought it an used it occasionally because I don’t cut any wood on a seasonal basis.Fuel lines rotted out after about 3yrs so I just stored it away for about 10yrs.I am 65 yrs old now an retired , so I decided to rebuild it.All it really needed was new primer bulb an fuel lines along with a good cleaning. Now it runs like new.Ive seen so many videos on line showing how to sharpen the chain an they make it sound like rocket science.I bought myself some 5/32 Dremel stones an your video seem to simply the process very well , instead of scaring someone not to try it. Thanx.

And that is how this video was, Concise, simple And full of wisdom.

THANK YOU! I love your common sense. Out of all the vids I watched today on chainsaw sharpening, you were the first, and only one that said the angle of the blade wasn't as crucial as stated by others. I could also see no reason for such exacting gadgets as the others were using. Common sense is a dying art.

I think YOUR WAY is going to be MY WAY in the future. This made more sense and was shot at a far better viewing angle than any other chainsaw sharpening video I've seen. Thanks for this common sense approach. Some videos focus on the exact angle & the exact number of filing strokes that are "correct" making the process overly-complicated. I like that you explained all the necessary stuff about angle, temper and direction of sharpening but do it your way meaning you do what it takes to make it sharp so it cuts wood. Thanks for not wasting your words or my time. It's an excellent video. To me, you hit a home run your first time at bat.

Thank you Jerald. Great advice! I have a Stihl MS250 and use the Dremel 453, 5/32" chain saw sharpening stone bit with the Dremel chain saw guide that that screws on the end of the Dremel next to the bit and shows the 30 degree angle which is helpful. But it is good to know that you can change that angle in case a tooth is damaged. I also like the stone you use. It is wider than the 5/32" 453 and fills the tooth better. Additionally, I noticed that you sharpened on a slightly downward angle and went back and forth about 5-10 times. Sometimes I overdo it. I'll also try to get those magnifying glasses that you wear. Great video Jerald...Thanks Again.

This video is just what I needed. My local saw shop is 2 weeks out for chain sharpening, and a new chain is over $20 just for my small saw. The angle may not be critical and I agree. I have been running five or six saws harvesting firewood and I keep a 120VAC power inverter on my truck so I can run my Dremel in the field. When I'm sharpening a chain, I'm not too concerned about angles.... But you need SOME angle to create a "set" to the chain creating a slightly larger cut than the tooth is wide to eliminate binding. I also totally remove the rakes. When I'm felling a tree I don't want them keeping the feed at a "safe" rate, since standing there holding a slow cutting chainsaw embedded in a 36 inch tree that's starting to topple, is not always a safe place to be. Competition chainsaws in lumberjack events don't use any angles for set at all, but they are also using small V8 or V6 engines under very controlled conditions too. Again, if some angle is left, then things will run just fine. Files are too slow and I don't find they really cut the chain all that well anyway, and in the field I don't have time to file for 2 or 3 minutes per tooth, sitting around drinking coffee.

Great video. This is how I have been doing it for at least 20 years also. I figured out this method by myself. It is faster than anything else I tried and I do it right on the saw up on the bench. I also agree that the angle is not as important as the sharpening jig people will tell you. However, it is easy to follow the original angle built into the new chain.

for those asking about the rakers, you will know when you need to take the rakers down a bit when your saw is not cutting well under its own weight, if you have to push a sharp chain into the wood to get it to cut your rakers are holding the chain away from the wood, hit the rakers with a file a few strokes or just touch them with the dremel grinder and you'll be good to go. be careful though, only need about .025 for the tooth to be above the raker, take the raker down too far and your chain tooth will dig in too deep and bog down your chainsaw.

I bought a couple of the Dremel stones, 5/32, and found it quick, easy and effective. I just marked out 30 degree lines both ways on a large piece of cardboard. The con was that the stones wore very quickly and visibly got smaller as I used them. two chains per stone is about it unless I was over doing the cut. I notice there are other brands to try which I may do next time.

Nice video. I bought a fancy but junk chain sharpener with a guide. Your way is much better. I took the guide off and it works so much better. Thanks the video.

Thanks for the straightforward, no-nonsense chain sharpening video, Jerald! It looks pretty easy and I'm going to jump in and attempt your Dremel-based technique. Makes perfect sense to me and requires a minimum of equipment.

Is the Dremmel sharpening method also good for maintenance sharpening, for minor day-to-day sharpening for occasional intensive use, or should I wait until the chain is mostly dull to use it?

John Boone never wait till the chain is dull, touch it up when its just not sharp, that way you will take the least off the tooth
