The chosen men playing dead was used to great effect in the book of _Sharpe's_ _Eagles_ at Valdelacasa, but didn't feature in the tv show of that book, so it's nice to see it here. I like the way the series uses scenes from the books where they'll fit, even in a different story.

I don’t get why the chosen men never get any replacements proper.Iin any military any formation from large battalions to small specialized squads of their numbers are cut down to more than half numbers should be replenished. Then again perhaps that part of the reason Sharpe was given command of of Frekriksons’s rifle unit.

I remember crying when I first saw this as a 14 year-old when the show first aired - I always associated most with Perkins, because he was the most like me. It's really well scripted, acted & directed, & I'm a little watery-eyed & wondering why, as I watch this. I'd have love to have seen the further adventures of Perkins - maybe he'd have earned a commission & had fantastic stories to tell beyond Waterloo... Tales of love & misadventure in occupied Paris, amongst all the armies there, and tales of derring-do across Britain's growing empire...

No budget? Are we watching the same show? It's clear they actually had a considerably large budget. Most of the filming was done in the Crimea, Spain, Portugal, England and the last two episodes are shot in India, has a pretty pricey cast of actors, the quality costuming is brilliantly done. The average cost at the time of production was £600 000 per hour of film for a good quality drama. Sharpe's cost more than that and this whole series almost didn't get filmed at all because it was so expensive. Sharpe's is no shoestring budget show.

Unfortunately they hadn't a bigger budget, they shot the whole thing in Ukraine, not in Spain and France, there it would have been possible to hire reenactment groups like the producers of "North & South" did in the 80's, for battle and camp scenes. Futhermore, the production of SHARPE decided to adapted out several characters and storyarcs, like "Captain Lossow" and "The King's German Legion"! Another problem was that several of the novels weren't finished at the point the movies went into production. Therefore there are heavy discrepancies, like in GAME OF THRONES after the booksources ran out!

? ? Under the semblance of verisimilitude this is all absurdly overromanticized, pretty uniforms, quaint little towns, but though we see hundreds of killed and wounded and Sharpe has been wounded, sword-cut, brutally beaten in every episode for six years now, where are the scenes of gangrene, vomiting, dysentery and cholera, chopped off limbs, bad food with no nutrients, why does everyone just die immediately, and why is everyone implausibly handsome and beautiful with not one fat person, (oh yes Runciman for comic relief)?
@Exodianecross1978
3 жыл бұрын
@@rogerpropes7129 That's a good point. Being an actor myself I can tell you that the producers do EVERYTHING to make a show appealing to the audience, and showing ugliness and dirt isn't very attractive. Only there where it is necessary. I could explain it with TV Tropes like "Wake Up Make Up" where everything is perfect despite the circumstances that are displayed. Another important point is that you have a limited castingpool to find suitable actors. For example, imagine that you need someone with a special look that fits in a time period OR an actor/actress that has a resemblance of a real historic figure. What are you doing when there is none? You have to take what you get. And there is also a very funny point, in EVERY movie or TV production set in the past you can argue that the people in it have a "perfect dentition", like here in Sharpe. Why? Because everyone in the western countries had dental braces during childhood, "wild teeth" like they were common place in the past have become very rare. So what to do? Find a suitable actor with the right dentition? Or give an actor false teeth? That would be disruptive for their play, or could be. The bottom line is, a TV show or a movie should be appealing and therefore there are changes contributed to that what the viewers want and the actors/actresses available!
@therealfourthhorseman6839
3 жыл бұрын
@@rogerpropes7129 because it is a movie. Not many people volunteer as actors to get killed and gangrene
It's well done that the amount of rifles firing the salute at the end keeps getting smaller. They could have kept replacing the rifles characters when one died (or disappeared off screen like Cooper and Tongue), but the fact they kept it consistent and let the number dwindle is a nice touch.
59:09 "I will do what I can, when I can. If I can. But I do it for you, not for your husband. And there is no charge." Absolutely beautiful line. I have thought this as well. I hope that Netflix or someone takes this and remix it with the proper budget. After reading the books, the scope of the battles is disappointing in the movies. I heard that in the War Hammer 40,000K novels, they got their idea for how Commissar Colonel Gaunt should look from Sean Bean's role here.
I'm guessing from the comments that most don't seem to realize that this series is based upon books written by Bernard Cornwell, the same author as the "Last Kingdom". He's a modern day Patrick O'Brian, author of the "Master and Commander" series, some of the best books ever written. Both authors base their novels on historical records, Patrick's being "exact as to every Cannon Shot and every Bullet fired, taken from the records of HRM Navy" (by one critic's estimation). The historical precedence of Novels like these begins with Tobias Smollett's "Roderick Random" and "Peregrine Pickle". These are books that both Jane Austin and Louisa May Alcott ( Emma, Little Women) were familiar very with. The same vein is taken up again in the "Horatio Hornblower" series by C. S. Forester, which the "Captain Hornblower" book was made into an excellent movie staring Gregory Peck. Having read and reread and loved all of these books, I just wanted to save you all some Leg Work. Thanks Crusher, for uploading this great series! I might even be learning a little Spanish from the subtitles, although I've tried in the past, Languages don't seem to be my Forte. Cheers, Jack

Woah, déjà vu. Nice catch!
Excellent series
I well up when I watch Pats reaction to Perkins being killed, it gets me everytime I watch this...I have the special edition box set, along with the book, sad I know.
THIS SHOW IS AWESOME!!!!
Loup is one of the best enemies in this, second only to Calvet in my opinion because he has a good motivation for fighting Sharpe.

Outstanding series
Unusual to find a whole episode, enjoy while you can me thinks.
Such a good series. Hopefully Sharp's Assassin will come to fruition.
Just an interesting observation: the place where they shot Perkins got bayoneted, is also the place where Perkins became chosen men, it is the same church square.
I love pats attitude towards the under equipped Irish
Sharep's Ninja move appears to be kick em in the nuts. He has displayed this skill on several episodes now.

Sean at his best. So ruggedly handsome.
