Tears? A nephew's girlfriend, named Alexandra Dodger, was the child of a single mum. She put herself through university and law school. She whad always been an activist from her childhood in support of the disadvantaged. When she passed the bar she was hired by Amnesty International. Just prior to starting her acreer she was run down in the street and killed by a drunk driver. This song was played at her funeral. When I heard this at the Cohen concert I was crying so hard I could hardly stand.

I saw Cohen in concert in Toronto. He was marvellous, his band was so tight and professional, and Sharon Robinson held the audience in awe with this beautiful song. What you don't see in this fine video is Leonard himself: kneeling, looking up at Sharon with his trademark fedora held over his heart in reverent appreciation. He is a truly gracious artist.

both times I saw Leonard, in 2009 and 2012, it's Sharon that causes me to involuntarily stream tears. I literally have to wipe them away through the whole performance. No live show will ever be able to compare in the history of live performances. Her voice is a tearjerker and Leonard is the best he's ever been. Absolute perfection.

When Leonard came to Ottawa in 2012 he brought Sharon where for the first time I was mesmerized as the world melted away as she crooned out Alexandra Leaving with her golden voice. I bought her album Everybody Knows and the newer one Caffeine, both of which are amazing. As Cohen acknowledges, this exquisite song is an adaptation of The God Abandons Anthony by Greek poet Constantine P Cavafy. This is a translation of the original poem. I love how Leonard and Sharon have adapted this to a more personalised song When suddenly, at midnight, you hear An invisible procession going by With exquisite music, voices, Don’t mourn your luck that’s failing now, Work gone wrong, your plans All proving deceptive - don’t mourn them uselessly. As one long prepared, and graced with courage, Say goodbye to her, the Alexandria that is leaving. Above all, don’t fool yourself, don’t say It was a dream, your ears deceived you: Don’t degrade yourself with empty hopes like these. As one long prepared, and graced with courage, As is right for you who were given this kind of city, Go firmly to the window And listen with deep emotion, but not With whining, the pleas of a coward; Listen - your final delectation - to the voices, To the exquisite music of that strange procession, And say goodbye to her, the Alexandria you are losing.

It's actually an adaptation of Lawrence Durrell's free translation of Cavafy's poem - Durrell's is way better than the original The lyric here has little to do with either Durrel's version or the original poem, both of which are about leaving Alexandria, the Egyptian city, not Alexandra, a woman. Anyone know what the line 'Alexandra hoisted on his shoulder' is a take on?

Cleopatra is dead, and Antony, all alone in the palace, faces the end of all his dreams. The name of the poem in Greek is "Apoleípein o Theós Antónion". I've seen Leonard Cohen in concert five times since 1976 and every experience was amazing. He's the best song writer and concert performer of his generation (and beyond).

I saw Leonard in December of 2012. It feels like the other day that I saw him. He was amazing live! This song moved me especially.
Probably my favorite collaboration in the history of music. Knowing Cohen’s work in depth makes Robinson’s extensive contributions to Ten New Songs completely clear. His style is so unexpectedly complemented by hers, and it makes Ten New Songs my favorite Leonard Cohen album.
A deeply moving song, and what an exquisite delivery: flawless technique yet utterly devoid of ego.
I saw Leonard Cohen live throughout Europe and Sharon Robinson's Alexandra Leaving was a highlight every time - a beautiful song sung by a great singer.
Beautiful song, sung by a beautiful voice, ❤❤ Sep. 2020
Sharon Robinson is not only a very beautiful woman but she has a most Beautiful voice. I listen to her sing this song over and over. I can't get enough of her voice and beauty.
Stunning, gorgeous, tender and so very, very haunting.

When Leonard came to Ottawa in 2012 he brought Sharon where for the first time I was mesmerized as the world melted away as she crooned out Alexandra Leaving with her golden voice. I bought her album Everybody Knows and the newer one Caffeine, both of which are amazing. I can only imagine how devastated she must be right now, along with the rest of us at Leonard's passing; a torch too soon extinguished.
Incredible performance, lyrics and melody. Leonard Cohen - forever in our hearts.
Love you, Sharon. Will love you always, Leonard. Saw you in Vegas in the early 2000's. Pure magic.
My granddaughter is a big Leonard Cohen fan and her name is Alexandra (we call her Sasha) She saw Leonard in Boston and was overwhelmed by the entire show. She was 17 then.. She still enjoys his voice and amazing lyrics. As do we all. Alexandra Leaving has a special place in me. A beautiful song and a beautiful girl.

A heartbreakingly beautiful song from a beautiful singer. The greatest tribute to Leonard Cohen.
The ease in which Sharon Robinson makes this song and hits that last note amazing control.
What a beautiful voice Sharon has and the beauty comes from within.
You rocked my all time favorite song, Sharon. Thank you
Fantastic, love this version
you are so right I saw her with Leonard Cohen in November 2012 in Saskatoon Saskatchewan ..I t was the thrill of a lifetime to see this fabulous world class performer like the finest of wine he just ages to perfection
This is an outstanding performance.
I was here, i will never forget, so great to see this in real, hear it in real, yes, this is IT
As Cohen acknowledges, this exquisite song is an adaptation of The God Abandons Anthony by Greek poet Constantine P Cavafy. As one long prepared, and graced with courage, As is right for you who were given this kind of city, Go firmly to the window And listen with deep emotion, but not With whining, the pleas of a coward; Listen - your final delectation - to the voices, To the exquisite music of that strange procession, And say goodbye to her, the Alexandria you are losing.

this so called greek poem sucks. Leonard's Original is Far better and Superior in every way. This cheap greek prose isn't even a poem. its shitty prose.

Exalted performance and genius song.
Oh my that was beautiful spiritual & uplifting thank you for all your collaborations with Leonard over the years. Very special.
I saw Leonard and company in San Jose a month ago with a young musician friend, half my age. We were both enthralled by the performance. nearly 3 hours of stunning music. I'm 60 and over the years I've seen most of the greats and the show was at the very pinnacle oof anything I've ever seen. this was a highlight but for me it came when Leonard approached the front of the stage with very little accompaniment and sang "Like a bird, on the wire" All the hair on my arms stood up and I had tears..
I was also at Leeds, Leonard was absolutely brilliant as ever, and Sharon Robinson singing this track was amazing, brilliant musicians 3 1/2 hours of pure bliss, if you haven't seen Leonard's show yet I recommend you try and catch it. Beautiful beautiful happy happy
This is my favourite Leonard Cohen song. Leonard, "suddenly the night has grown colder" with your leaving all of us. I had the privilege of seeing your concert in our shared hometown of Montreal. I am so grateful for all your music and words. You have helped me deal with sadness in my life. Thank you so, so much.

Ryan Brown I agree Ryan that his songs speak directly to one's heart and soul.
I also seen Leonard and co. back in the 70's and he is the business now just as he was as he was growing. He's an inspiration to all who want to pursue a genuine life with music and thats not taking into account the books of prose and poetry he has given us, The MAN is a genius and we love him in Dublin.
This is so emotional; lovely!
Saw her with Len in Dublin last year- he was consumate as usual, but the whole audience (even those headed for the bar!) stopped, buttoned our gobs, and gave fully to hear this beautiful woman singing this - it was cult ceremony! Just sublime.
Sharon as usual your voice is beautiful, you must sorely miss singing with Leonard, I still can't believe he's gone. I have been in tears through this whole evening as I listen with a heavy heart to the greatness poet, songwriter and singer. ☮️
I saw this live less than a week ago at the MTS centre. It gave me chills. She was fabulous. I was only disappointed they didn't turn up the house lights so she could see how many of us were giving her a standing ovation.
Just gifted this beautiful piece..calibration with Leonard Cohen was a magical moment in time...♥
Songwriters: Leonard Cohen / Sharon Robinson. They wrote it together.
Che voce fantastica ha questa cantante. Meravigliosa sia come solista e sia quando accompagna il leggendario Cohen.
Thanks for being with us
this is a song so close to my heart.. the lyrics fit perfectly and spoke to me so deeply when a dear friend was dying ~my courageous beautiful friend when she was leaving this world..... love you Jac xxxxx

I saw Cohen at Radio City Saturday night and it was an extraordinary, transformative experience. Perhaps the finest group of musicians assembled on any stage--anywhere. Oh my-
no words for this amazing woman!
Agree 100% with this. Like Alan, I was priviliged to have shared the O2 with Mr Cohen and quite the greatest band I`ve ever heard in my life. This was yet another highlight of a never-to-be forgotten concert...this man is the greatest writer and conduit for music that I know. God Bless and keep you Mr Cohen-and those great singers he deserves!
Saw this at Cohen's Montreal show last night... it was so, so, so incredibly moving. People were in tears (me included) all around us. Beautiful piece, beautiful voice.
I heard her sing this yesterday evening. Simply sublime.
Cohen meets Kavafis: wonderful lyrics. Cohen meets Sharon: beautiful music. And Sharon sings like angels in heaven. What a rendition! Thanks, Albert.

@@esthermiha788 "The god abandons Antony". It's about the end of Antony in Alexandria (a town in Egypt) after his defeat against the Roman Army. Cleopatra is dead, and Antony, all alone in the palace, faces the end of all his dreams. The name of the poem in Greek is "Apoleípein o Theós Antónion". It's one of the best poems of Kavafis, in my opinion. Leonard Cohen wrote a wonderful song based in this poem. It's not a translation.

My absolute favorite by the poet and artist Leonard Cohen! Thank you Sandra..simply wonderful..do not choose a coward's explanation....
I just saw Leonard at Radio City Music Hall. Until tonight I had only ever heard covers of his songs except his duet with Elton John "Born to Lose". The musicians he surrounds himself with are some of the most amazing players I have ever heard.
Saw this live in Toronto. Truly an amazing song, done by an amazing performer. An entire audience absolutely silent through the song; you really could have heard a pin drop.

Totally agree with you Mark! I was at the Saturday night show at Radio City and am still pinching myself. Some of the very finest musicians on the planet coupled with three backup singers to die for, all led by the peerless and charming Leonard, who remains in top form. I think I can die now ;-)
Great performance, goose bumps !
Exquisite. A real highlight of the current Leonard Cohen tour.
