Sharon Lavigne's Story of RISE St. James | The World We Need

Ойын-сауық

What would you do if you didn't have clean air to breathe? The people of St. James Parish, Louisiana have had to live that reality for decades as a result of toxic pollution from plastic production plants. Watch as Sharon Lavigne, 2021 Goldman Environmental Prize recipient, illustrates the fight to save their community.
The World We Need is a new book offering a vivid look at the people protecting America’s communities against environmental degradation and racism. The Story of Stuff Project is partnering with Grist and The New Press to produce a short video series highlighting four phenomenal activists, the second of whom is Sharon Lavigne, founder of RISE St. James. Find more about the people in the book at theworldweneed.com/ and learn how you can support RISE on their website, stopformosa.org.

"make" connotes "force" - perhaps 'guide' them or show them the way, avoids backlash and revolting things like war, economic and political devastation, retaliation etc... people do not respond well to being 'forced' or 'made' to do things; they need to be convinced. Again, communication is key :) Lest you mistake my meaning or intent, what I'm saying is that long-term, the result of imposing force, rather than teaching in good faith, likely causes more problems and global disasters than we can imagine - far greater than the ones we endeavor to solve

As you know, these are extremely complex issues requiring a holistic approach, combined with experts. Simply deferring to experts is not the sole solution. We need cross-training and cross-education, and people who can communicate without being ostracized out of being misunderstood, or perhaps even properly understood, as a potential threat to certain entities (who/which, by the way, do not need to fear nearly as much as they do fear. Instilling fear and terror into people - especially powerful people - is counterproductive. I could never work in 'sales' if I did not believe in what I was selling. Perhaps attracting people who know what it's like to be poor AND 'rich', and have walked a mile in 'different shoes', are best positioned to communicate effectively with all groups. Pitting technology against humanity is how many people may misconstrue videos like this. Only because I've been studying your other videos, for instance, was I able to see what where your heart is. If only we could strike the right balance here - so that we don't end up in endless wars, prisons, slave camps, and many other atrocities that are 'triggered' to emerge out of our inherent human nature.... I have spent my life pondering these problems from many different angles, and I found that the first thing that was necessary as a prerequisite for this work is to actively remove hate for our fellow human beings - whoever they are. Forgiveness is essential, as none of us are innocent, and many if not most of us would be doing many great 'evils' and worse, if we only had the opportunity. Self-awareness of this is key - before we proceed to activism, in my opinion, lest we become the enemy we despise. These are self-evident truths, and probably can be expressed mathematically, if we only could harness the right inputs, variables, and equations. Yet, this sort of system can become a form of slavery as well, if we are all forced to be automatons. Free will is an essential component to keep us from becoming self-destructive beings who destroy our environment out of spite, if nothing else. Studies prove this (sociology/anthropology, psychology, etc.)

Sorry that this company from my country made so many troubles. Formosa has a bad record in Taiwan as well, since it is too big to fail, our government ignored people's protest.

Its good that developing country are at the start of this phase , they can take a lesson from this , that too much industrialization is fatal but the only question is that will they learn from this or not because most of them ignore it in the name of developement.🙄 I think they need to change the meaning of developement in thier dictionary.

For decades when I have heard the word 'developement', I see the word 'destruction'. Power and money are all corrupt governments and their pals in big corrupt corporation are interested in, they don't care about the damage they do to the environment. We all need clean air to breath, clean water to drink and clean Earth to grow food.

@@catherinewilliams3850 Actually we cant do anything when people dont want to understand. I think inequality among the people plays an important role to bring us where we are today.Unequal distribution of resources is the major issue for the cause of industrialization.

There are very few reasons to celebrate plastic. There is a need to put pandora back in the box. We need much smarter engineers who realize natural products are much more sustainable. The whole earth needs to slow down and stop killing our planet.
