Shark Wheels Review: Are They Actually Good?

Спорт

Shark Wheels are probably the most polarizing product I’ve ever seen in the skate & longboard scene. I wanted to test them for myself and took note of how they felt based on their four main claims. This is my shark wheels review based on my opinion.

These are called shark wheels because their design is based on the shape of shark jaws. I purchased these about four months ago - the 72mm & 60mm which are both 78a.
And on their packaging, they basically have four main claims...
They’re better for rough terrain, they’re faster, they have better sliding control, and they last 15% longer
Those are some pretty heavy claims, so I did my best to take all of them into consideration when riding. And, I know I probably could’ve done several other alternative testing methods but this was what I came up with.
I’m not here to make the most scientifically accurate tests, I’m just trying to give you a better idea of what these products are like and if I think their claims are justified after personally testing them.
Like if jimmy bob joe in Arkansas picks up these wheels because he heard they’re better for rougher terrain and faster, is he actually going to feel that difference when riding. You feel me?
Or are these claims just good for marketing purposes?
Basically, the goal was to test if I really felt the differences compared to the traditional wheel, to help you decide if you wanna spend the extra money.

I gotchu fam, i bought some of these a few weeks back, and ive been snacking on them occasionally. I think tthe coloring is fun and so is the shape, but they’re a bit big to fit in your mouth whole. I suggest cutting them along the seams and eating them in thirds. It’s very chewy, and have a very nice taste. A lot of potential to be a good snack if they released a grape or lime flavor to accompany the blue raspberry flavor. 7/10

I've been using Shark wheels for years and I honestly love them. The number one selling point for me is the fact that if you hit a patch of gravel, you're not getting launched off the board. If you hit rocks, they spit them out to side and you just keep on rolling. I like to ride whenever and wherever I want, including rain and rough terrain, and they allow me to do so with confidence. I can definitely understand not being able to justify the cost for the average cruiser, but as one of the outliers who does benefit from them, they're worth it for me. I honestly came to this video expecting the usual response to them which is along the lines of "shark wheels bad, it's a gimmick, normal wheels are better, I can't handle things that are different", but I totally agree with your takeaway. It's nice to see someone skeptical giving them a good objective look.

How do they "spit stuff to the side"? Since they roll, wheels are stationary relative to the ground at the contact point, there is not sideways motion there. I'd say any improvement on rough terrain is actually from he simple fact that they HAVE tread at all. Tread/no tread alone is a huge difference, that's why slick bike tires are near useless on a trail. Tread allows for mechanical traction where material friction alone might fail.

Can confirm, Shark Wheels are pretty solid for wet and rougher skating. I ride daily on Sharks and I think that the bearings play a major part in how fast they will be. In the city, I definitively notice the difference if I need to be on the street dodging potholes and cars, they really offer some solid control that I haven't found with other wheels.

Physics minor here: less contact with the ground does not mean more speed. The friction that slows you down most is from your wheel bearings, not contact with the ground. Deformation, aerodynamics and other factors play a role too but a smaller contact patch almost definitely doesn't translate to speed. Longboard wheels get pretty big, and they're pretty fast too 🤷‍♂️

I have never been stopped by a rock while going over 5mph. Sharks are a must if cruising in a city or anywhere where there is certain to be a lot of road debris. These Shark wheels are awesome. I like them. When i ride on smooth surfaces, they are great, they don't drag. For riding on rough surfaces, like asphalt, they are excellent. They last a long time. They are only $50 for all four. I have been running these for 7 months, and i must say. I find the only thing different about these is no drawbacks whatsoever. They allow you to ride everywhere.

I remember when these were being designed and their very long drawn out releases. I also remember telling people just to but dirt board wheels or find the wheels that were the Goodyear collab and smaller than traditional dirt board wheels (may be around 80mm, I had them as a kid and saw them get released in my late teens I think). Great video, and I agree with your points, especially about harping on the company for marketing a literal redesign of the wheel. It was obviously a challenge to create and market it, and that alone deserves recognition (especially since it isn't /worse/ than the normal wheel).

The lip shape of shark wheels is awful. It causes all sorts of problems with sliding or even just riding fast. And all of the benefits you mentioned are literally just due to rain grooves, a feature that you can do to any wheel.

Got a pair of these for my Nickel board a while back, then again more recently as it was bundled with some better bearings than I had. I personally got them because the original wheels on my Nickel were the completely flat ones with a sharp lip edge. When I road on streets around my hometown on the originals, any rock/pebble bigger than maybe 1/8 of an inch or so would stop the wheel in its tracks and screech against the ground. If I was going fast when that happened I’d get jolted forward, sometimes off the board entirely. Since getting shark wheels I haven’t experienced that nearly as often, at the very least needing to hit much bigger rocks to have the same effect. Also, like you mentioned, the grip on wet surfaces is quite good. I use my Nickel to go to classes on my college campus now, so it’s nice to have that extra wet grip for rainy days too. Definitely not a must-have replacement for standard wheels, but definitely worthwhile for daily use

I backed the kickstarter and received 2 sets of shark wheels. The difference in ride wasn't all that significant, but it does seem softer, and less prone to launching me off my board when I roll over a pebble at low speeds. Id say they're worth it for the look alone though, since in my opinion they look pretty sweet.

Wow, I never expected to find a video where the reviewer actually thoroughly tested the wheels, and rode them for an extended period of time instead of just giving first impressions, instant sub from me

I feel it’s the grooves that help. The overall shape and curved outer surface don’t help much. Likely takeaway from its overall ability stabilize at high speed.

My friend got me a retrospec and from what I've read (and can tell with my little experience) I know I need different wheels and thought about getting these. I'm just a baby longboard person so I really appreciate this video. Now I know I don't have to dish out $60 on some wheels, so thank you :)

I own a pair, and have them on my board that I really just use for commute and cruising. The do absolutely help on rocks in my opinion as well as rougher terrain. I as well enjoy the asthetic very much

I have been using shark wheels for a while now. Where they are amazing is especially on brick paved streets and parks, you get a much smoother ride than traditional wheels on these paves. I won't go back to traditional weeks tbh

I genuinely thought these were candies but I’m not upset. A great video and a pretty cool set of wheels.

A class mate at uni 15 years back wanted to make wet weather wheels and his final design ended up with something almost identical and they work really well in wet, not mint for rull rough terrain put fir those odd pebbles and rocks they are good at shifting them. I think I might still have a pair we cast kicking around
