for those who don't know, this is a Basking Shark, a harmless filter feeder, similar to the Whale Shark in diet and behavior. You could've hopped in and swam beside it albeit the freezing water.

It’s a small/young basking shark. Plankton eater. No threat at all but, clearly, no-one in this video has ever seen one before - which I find odd, as they are regular visitors off the north coast of Northern Ireland, especially in late summer. Several of us in our late teens in the 1970s were fishing from a 15ft boat not 100yds from that very location (outside the harbour) and a fully grown basking shark cruised right beside us. It was easily much bigger than our boat and freaked out one of my friends so much he almost capsized is!!! It’s mouth was wide open as it passed us, feeding, which was very impressive but not at all scary to those of us who knew what it was.

I've been in the water with a basking shark twice, one was dead and the other didn't want to come near me. The dead one almost gave me a heart attack though, I was snorkelling round some rockpools at high tide and I swim through a gap into a larger pool and when I look down I see this 8 foot shark just lying on the bottom, literally scared the shit out of me, flew out the water like I'd been shot from a cannon

Ah a keyboard warrior, its more that I comment on the lack of respect towards another living creature, than the possibility of harm to it. but thanks for high-lighting your lack of understanding and sympathy. And if someone threw little stones at you, it might not hurt you, but it would piss you off no?

***** It's what kids do, but that's why kids are little fuckers at times. Kids need to be taught respect. In certain situations, you're right; kids do what kids do. But kids shouldn't be throwing shit at animals. In this video, it's not a big deal.. It was some dirt and what not, and the shark was clearly not harmed. It's more the principle than anything. Don't try to inflict harm on other living beings, unless you need to eat or you're defending yourself. That's just me, though. I probably wouldn't have scolded the kid for it. Maybe mentioned something later when he wasn't in front of his friends.

"common" but having a large range it is very rare to actually see one. Maybe lucky to get 1 or 2 sightings a year. It's not like seeing for example a blacktip reef shark in warmer climates, which tend to stay in shallower water and do not venture far outside their range.

I thought it was a harmless shark by the way it moved; more whale shark like. The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second largest living fish, after the whale shark, and one of three plankton-eating sharks besides the whale shark and megamouth shark. It is a cosmopolitan migratory species, found in all the world's temperate oceans. It is a slow-moving filter feeder; its common name derives from its habit of feeding at the surface, appearing to be basking in the warmer water there. It has anatomical adaptations for filter feeding, such as a greatly enlarged mouth and highly developed gill rakers. Its snout is conical and the gill slits extend around the top and bottom of its head. The gill rakers, dark and bristle-like, are used to catch plankton as water filters through the mouth and over the gills. The basking shark is usually greyish-brown, with mottled skin. The caudal (tail) fin has a strong lateral keel and a crescent shape. The teeth of the basking shark are very small and numerous, and often number one hundred per row. The teeth have a single conical cusp, are curved backwards, and are the same on both the upper and lower jaws. Adults typically reach 6-8 m (20-26 ft) in length. Basking sharks are believed to overwinter in deep waters. They may be found in either small schools or alone. Small schools in the Bay of Fundy and the Hebrides have been seen swimming nose to tail in circles in what may be a form of mating behaviour. Despite their large size and threatening appearance, basking sharks are not aggressive and are harmless to humans. It has long been a commercially important fish, as a source of food, shark fin, animal feed, and shark liver oil. Overexploitation has reduced its populations to the point where some have disappeared and others need protection.

Why are people only thinking about humans? The shark has a life of its own to so people should let it be. Most sharks don’t specifically go after a human they just think it is food. Once they taste it they will go away that is if they take a bite they are also curious about what is going on because we are destroying their environment and their lives.
